Three is hard to come up with.

My favorite, non-microbrew is Dos Equis Amber.

XX Amber is pretty good.  You also might like Negra Modelo.

My favorite Mexican beers are Bohemia (a really tasty, true Czech-style pilsner) and Pacifo Clara (one of the best 100-degree-poolside beers ever made).

Guinness Stout in a pint glass

Guinness Draught poured from a bottle into an official tulip-shaped Guinness glass

and Blue Moon Horchata

Yeah yeah I know Blue Moon is fake microbrew hand puppet made by Coors who have a long history of abusing migrant workers and contributing their money to weirdo causes

but it's good beer

Some of the beers within different beer styles are too similar to distinguish so I'll just go with beer styles:

1. Scotch Ales (eg. Founder's Dirty Bastard & Backwoods Bastard)
2. Dunkels (mostly made by German breweries)
3. Doppelbocks (eg. Ayinger Celebrator, Troeg's Troegenator)
HM. Porters, Black Ales / Lagers, Oktoberfests

As a bonus, here's some suggestions for good beer bars / brewpubs / taprooms in Philadelphia (where I lived for 5 years until last year) and Chicago (where I live now):

Philadelphia - Monk's, Eulogy, Khyber Pass, Good Dog, The Institute, Standard Tap, South Philly Tap Room, Pub on Passyunk East, Devil's Den, Frankford Hall, Misconduct, Yard's
Chicago - Monk's (not related), Sheffield's, Kaiser Tiger, Hopleaf*, Map Room*, Fountainhead*, Beermiscuous, Revolution, Half Acre, Baderbrau, Maria's*, Howells & Hood*, Bangers & Lace*

*Haven't been yet but have only heard positive reviews.

Thanks Michi, I'll defiitely keep my eyes open for those if/when I get out t Philly or Chicago.

And CH, Blue Moon is okay as far as the macro-fake-micros go.  Last summer they brought out a beer they called "Balgian Table Pilsner" and it was a VERY good beer.  And their standard Belgian wit offerings are decent, too.

Another interesting, yet potentially contentious thread title would be "what is the most disgusting beer to ever wash across your palate"... or something like that.

And my answer would undoubtedly be Schafer.  Dear God Almighty, I had an experience about 20 years ago so bad that I will never forget the taste of that skank swill.  Swill is a complement to this stuff.

I don't even know if it's still made any more, or if it's still as "low rent" as it used to be, but I puked up a lung, some other miscellaneous organs, and about $15 worth of Jack-in-the-Box while drinking that crap.  Worst drinking experience ever.

Absolute worst beer to ever grace the planet.  Lone Star is champagne up next to this canned horse piss.

I remember Pearl, not sure I've ever tried it.  And Falstaff - that must have sucked too.

I remember the days when Schlitz was a big seller around these parts.  My uncles drank it.  I never tasted the stuff, but I do remember my Dad migrating from Schlitz to Coors.

As a child, I don't remember any of my elders drinking Budweiser.  Maybe it wasn't huge in Texas back then.

I remember drinking something called Stegmeier, in PA.  It was a small company, I won't call it a microbrew because it was so bad.  It was $5 for a case, with $1.5 returned on the returnable bottles.  This was in 1989.

Amazingly, the 7-11 by my place apparently sells Bell's Hopslam now.

As for terrible beers (ignoring macrobrews, of course), white beers and various Belgian style beers I just can't appreciate. More for those who do, though....

Grolsch makes a beer that they bottle in big tall bottles with a tricky type of of flip wire cap. You'll know it when you see it.

I got them mostly because that funky flip cap has a red washer seal on it. That red washer seal fits perfectly over the strap stud on a guitar. When installed, it's a very recognizable DIY strap lock.

Turns out, the beer was delicious, too! Probably shouldn't have had two right before going on stage, though.

Grolsch is a decent Dutch lager.  Certainly better then Heineken...

I buy Grolsch for my friends that are into home-brewing.  Those resealable flip-lids are a lot better for bottling, than capping normal bottles on your own.

Of course, the really smart home-brewers simply keg and avoid the hassle of bottling.

I'm pretty sure many of you have tasted more beers than I've tasted beverages.

Let's see - water, coke, dr. pepper, sprite, Fanta orange, tea, koolaid, corona, bud, coors, miller, shiner.

That's 12 liquids I've ever tasted in 50+ years.  I wager utee has tasted more than 100 beers.

:97: <- and what is that emoji doing?  Shaking its fist or ....?

Yeah, I've definitely tasted more than 100 beers.

That emoji frightens me, by the way.

Also, when did they become emoji instead of emoticons?  We've had emoticons for almost 30 years, but now we're supposed to call them emoji?

I feel like this is something the hipsters did to us, in their incessant desire to pretend they invented everything simply by taking very old ideas and giving them new names.  Don't all of those bearded fake lumberjacks realize "tiny houses" are really nothing more than terribly inefficient RVs?

Emoticons are purely text based. They're just ASCII style drawings like :) or ===D

Emoji are unicode supported graphics. They're a standards based call that lets platforms easily display preloaded images without repeatedly transmitting the file.

We called them all emoticons, even once they became graphics, for a decade.

Then some skinny-jeans mustache with a pocket watch decided they should be called emojis.  And you're siding with that skinny-jeans mustache.   :73:

Just traveled to Northern California over the July 4 break, and stopped at Russian River Brewing Company.

Bought six bottles of Pliny the Elder and six of Blind Pig IPA to bring home... So those are my favorites (until I run out of them).

Currently on tap at Wrong Planet Brewing Co (my homebrew name) is a Rye IPA, Oktoberfestbier, Mint Milk Stout, 949 Blonde, and Blood Orange 949 Blonde.

there is a place near me.... like, within golf cart distance... that has received some awards for their selection of beers.  http://www.teaandbeer.com/ .... I've been trying to avoid that place, over the summer, but... It's about time i start putting together (on paper) my fall beer selection (notice the lower case 'f' in fall  :s_laugh: )....

anyway... they have an Irish Cream Stout there that is fantastic; and coupled with a decent pale ale and poured over a turtle?  uh-oh.... it's a meal replacement.

I was down in Old Mexico last week, and hit up a craft beer bar there in Playa del Carmen.  Their craft beer movement has been growing recently and, while it's nothing like the USA (or even most European countries), they have a decent enough heritage of brewing there (expecially Czech and German styles due to various waves of settlement over the years), that they were pretty good.

I tried a local saison and doppelbock that were both very good.  Don't recall their names, my brother took pictures on his phone though so we'd remember.

Not my first rodeo at RR... Been there several times and had their full taster set, and have brought home sours in the past.

This time I actually was there for an early lunch, and ended up having an IPA and a Belgian Dubbel with the pizza, so no sours. I didn't particularly want to buy sours to bring home as I was already blowing out my budget on all the wine (and the case of Pliny/Blind Pig). The sours [bottled] are expensive...

Don't think I ever posted in the old thread. To start off, I've only been into craft for maybe 5-6 years, so I'm not on the IPA hating train yet. Also, being summer, I'm drinking mostly IPA's right now and that's what is on top of mind.

So, top 3 IPA's right now:
1) Toppling Goliath King Sue (American Double)
2) Surly Todd the Axeman (American)
3) Tough pick between a bunch of solid IPA's. I'm a slave to the Citra hop, so I'll go w/Deschutes Fresh Squeezed.

In reality, all 3 slots are probably TG offerings, but that's too boring.

Top 3 Non-IPA's right now:
1) St. Bernardus ABT 12 (quad)
2) Weihenstephaner Korbinian (dopplebock)
3) Founders Dirty Bastard (scotch ale)

I'm planning on brewing my Oktoberfest on Saturday Aug 12, but I really need to get a brewday in before that. So I'm going to brew a clone of RR Blind Pig IPA tomorrow evening.

BTW [member=19]bwarbiany[/member], my neighbors and I just bought a home brew setup and we're doing our first batch Saturday. We're going to get a couple extracts under our belt before diving into all grain.

Awesome, good for you!

Homebrewtalk.com is a great forum and resource.

My top three tips (outside of sanitation, because that should be #0!)

1: Yeast health. Make a starter with liquid, or use dry yeast. Most of what you do on "brew day" can be screwed up, but as long as you have healthy happy yeast, they'll do their job well. That means you need enough yeast to start out that they're not stressed during fermentation, because that will lead to off flavors. So make sure you have enough yeast!

2: Fermentation temperature. Again, this is about keeping your yeast happy. However you have to do it, try to maintain fermentation temperatures in the 60-70 degree range for most ales. Note: that's *beer* temp, not ambient. Fermentation generates heat, so having one of those stick-on thermometers on your fermenter will tell you what the actual temp is. There are tons of ways to control temp (some are very cheap, i.e. putting the fermenter in a tub with water and rotate frozen water bottles to keep the temp in range), but this is one of the most important things I can stress about brewing delicious beer.

3: Water. This is less important since you're starting with extract, but the ENEMY in either extract or all-grain is chlorine/chloramine. If you don't know anything about your water, go buy distilled or spring water. If that's not an option, buy campden tablets, which will neutralize chlorine/chloramine in the water immediately. Frankly if your tap water tastes good, it's ok to brew with, but only after handling chlorine/chloramine. That will ruin your beer.

BTW if your beer kit instructions say to do a 1-week primary, 2-week secondary, etc. you can ignore that. No reason to use a secondary for most beers. Just keep it in primary 2-3 weeks, then bottle.

This nugget from Cliff Clavin

Well ya see, Norm, it’s like this… A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That’s why you always feel smarter after a few beers.”

Also like Andy Gator from Abita.

Kroger actually makes a beer (assuming that since I've only ever found it there) called Tap Room 21.  I like the Copper Lager version.

In the summer I like Blue Moon's Honey wheat Sumner ale

For mass quantities I'll choke down Budweiser and Coors Light

There's a reason for that. The trend in IPAs has been to be hoppy, but not bitter. The NEIPA style is really all about this (and the haze, which is a fad IMHO). They put a LOT of hops in, but all at the very end of the boil where they get big aroma and flavor but NOT a lot of bitterness. To extract bitterness, you need to boil the hops for an extended period of time.

Yup.  Bitter is bad.  Keystone taught us this over 20 years ago.

I had never even heard of a hazy IPA until it came up in this thread. Today I had (so far as I know) my first one - Foggy Geezer by WarPigs, which is apparently a collaboration of sorts between Three Floyds and Mikkeller. It has positive reviews from the beer sites, but I wasn't impressed, since it just tasted like a fruity pale ale, at best.

It's certainly not a style for everyone, but I do like that the industry is pulling back a little bit from making overly bitter beers.  There will always be a large market for the "American IPA" style in the USA, but I like to see people innovate in other directions.

Anyway, I'm currently drinking the heck out of Celis White and Celis Pale Bock.  So, so, so happy it's back.  And I can't wait for them to re-release their Grand Cru and Dubbel ales.

Apparently Pilsner is making a big comeback. Which is funny to me, as all the people who used to be Stone Brewing fanboys (the company that said "fizzy yellow beer is for wussies") are now drinking Pilsners. Heck, Stone (who bifurcated their brands and have a sub-brand now of "Arrogant Brewing") has released a pilsner called "Who you callin' wussie"...

Pilsners and pale lagers in general are hugely popular down here in Texico, such great beers for the heat.  But I don't have to tell you how difficult they are to brew and get consistently clean results.

I thought the Arrogant Stone fanbois were all drinking sours now?  Or was that last year... ;)

I'm about to find out. I'm brewing my first pilsner on Saturday.  :singing:

Sours were 2015 or so... Then session IPA. Now NEIPA and lagers. At least I think that's how it went lol.

But hell, I'm deeply into this world and I can't even keep up. I just drink and brew what I like.

Good luck on your first pilsner, then!  My friend who is the owner of Live Oak Brewing (oldest craft brewery in Austin proper), tells me that Budweiser is the greatest brewery in the world.  Not because they make good beer, they do not.  But because pilsners are among the toughest beers in the world to make cleanly and consistently, and they do it perfectly.

Anyway though, the nice thing about homebrewing is that you can always drink your mistakes and start over.

At least with 10+ years of experience brewing, I don't have too many mistakes. I'm pretty sure I'll make a respectable pilsner, and even if it's not *perfect*, it should still be pretty good.

But yes, Budweiser brews the same beer at multiple breweries all over the country, does so through variable barley yields, variable hop farming years, with different starting water at each brewery. And it tastes exactly the same every time. That's freaking impressive. Even if I make a good pilsner Saturday, and a good pilsner the next time I make one, they most assuredly won't be identical. I can brew, but I'm not that good lol.

Looking at a pretty stormy and rainy next 3-4 days here in the ATX.  I've stocked up on many, many beers to ride it out.  And since it's going to be "cooler" (you can read that as "something less than 100 degrees"), I've decided to focus on darker beers.

So I now have in my beer fridge:

12-pack of Celis Pale Bock
12-pack of Live Oak Big Bark (Vienna lager)
12-pack of Leffe Brune
4 Maredsous Brune

And then a bunch  of random pilsners and Mexican lagers leftover from "summer."

I'm ready for this hurricane!  :)

Man, some weak beer-drinking going on around here.

I'll name my top three for today:

1) Ayinger Oktober Fest - Marzen
2) Hacker Pschorr Original Oktoberfest
3) Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier

I was with (my brother who is in the biz) some guys who have worked at macro, and now do their own thing.  A guy that was with us was asking him about why micros don't brew much in the way of pilsners and other more mainstream styles.  His answer was along your lines.  He spun it around saying how we all (the micros) get to hide our flaws in our Ales and so forth.  He talked about the variances that even high quality micros have from batch to batch.  There's no hiding flaws in a light beer.   The Miller/Buds of the world are masters of their craft.    They understand water and the science better than anybody in the world, and thus have figured out how to control all of the variables.
Title: Re: Name Your Three Favorite Beers.
Post by: utee94 on September 19, 2017, 12:07:32 PM
Exactly.  I've heard that terminology as well-- ales and even dark lagers are better able to hide the flaws.  With lighter lagers, there's just nowhere to hide.

Which is why I really love beers like Live Oak Pilz.  It's absolutely delicious and flavorful in a way that American macro pilsners aren't and don't attempt to be.  It tastes every bit as good as the Czech pilsners did fresh at their breweries when I visited the Czech Republic some years ago.  It's an incredibly difficult beer to brew well, and consistently.  And of course living in Texico, it's pretty much a year-round brew for us.

So bwar, when will your pilsner be ready for consumption?

It's going into the keg this weekend. It will mostly sit lagering from then until my Oktoberfest party on 10/7.
This weekend I'll be brewing a hefeweizen to turn around quickly. So my lineup for the party will be:
Oktoberfestbier
Pilsner
Hefeweizen
Blood Orange Blonde
Piggy Beer IPA (clone of Russian River Blind Pig IPA)

Really can't go wrong with those teutonic taste treats. Are those just seasonal?I've had them all at one time or another. Here I am suffering with Great Lakes Oktoberfest offerings
Title: Re: Name Your Three Favorite Beers.
Post by: utee94 on September 22, 2017, 11:56:38 AM
Yeah, they're seasonal for sure.  But all of those breweries offer bocks and most of them offer doppelbocks, so if you want malty German goodness outside the Autumn months, there are always options.

Today I'll go local, my three favorite beers are:

1) Oaktoberfest - Live Oak Brewing, Austin, Texas
2) Oktoberfest -  Saint Arnold Brewing, Houston, Texas
3) Montecore Oktoberfest - Austin Beerworks, Austin, Texas

I know this isn't a good recommendation for utee, but I've been enjoying Firestone Walker's Luponic Distortion lately. It's been available in 6-packs at my local Costco so I've been grabbing it regularly.

A local brewery here called Barley Forge is also quite good. I don't know how far their distribution goes, but if you happen to see them anywhere, give it a try. Their "Grandpa Tractor" Dortmunder lager would even please utee lol... @MarqHusker (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=41) , you should be able to find some of this easily when you're driving through SoCal...

Ha! Described as "an ever-evolving mix of experimental hops."  Definitely gonna be a hard pass from me. :)

But a Dortmunder lager would certainly be interesting.

So while on my trip to the Breeders' Cup last weekend, I stopped at one liquor/convenience store in suburban LA, and within 30 seconds I was able to see, grab and purchase
Alaska Brewing Co. 'Smoked Porter' which was a 2008, amazing
RR's: Supplication and Consecration

That was  the highest quality single visit beer purchase I've ever made.

So the Celis Brewery has reopened in Austin, using the original recipes and mostly original branding from when they first started in the early 90s.  And now they've finally brought back their Celis Grand Cru which is a Belgian tripel.  Oh my it's so delicious.  So right now my three favorites are:

Celis Grand Cru (Belgian tripel)
Live Oak Primus (Weizenbock)
512 Pecan Porter

About to start my yearly Beervent...

Each year, my homebrew club makes beer advent calendars. Each person brings 12 each of two different beers, so 24 total, and we rearrange all of the beers (we always have at least 12 people join) so each person leaves with a mixed case.

Then, much like an advent calendar, you open a new one every day from Dec 1 through Dec 24.

Yeah, those were the days.  Now I'm just praying Texas can eek out a 7-6 season with a win in Mattress Mac's Galleryfurniture.com Bowl.
Anyway, this week my buddy Bald Greg and I are hitting a different brewery every day, leading up to our annual Liberation Day (last day of work before Christmas break).  On Monday we went to Austin Beerworks.  Yesterday was Oskar Blues (they opened a branch brewery in Austin about 1.5 years ago).  Today we'll be hitting up two-- Hops & Grain AND Zilker Brewing.  Thursday is probably Celis, and we'll finish up Friday with Live Oak Brewing, of course.
Speaking of milk stouts, Zilker makes a really terrific Coffee Milk Stout, not overly done on the coffee so it's just right.  And Celis just brought out a Coffee Belgian Dubbel that is promising based on its predecessor that I tried about a year ago.

Just finished big bottles (22-25 oz) that I got from my work secret Santa of 3 Floyds Alpha Klaus (better version of Alpha King) and Goose Island* Bourbon County Stout, while watching Michigan basketball annihilate Alabama A&M.

*Yes, Goose Island is still a sellout, especially with so many other great microbreweries in Chicago, but they still make some good small-batch beers like this.
Title: Re: Name Your Three Favorite Beers.
Post by: utee94 on December 22, 2017, 09:39:07 AM
Goose Island is still good.  And I don't have a problem with "selling out" in general, I'm a true believer in pure Market Capitalism after all. :)

The problem I DO have with the macro breweries is that they actively engage in anti-competitive behaviors, like working through lobbyists to obtain extremely tilted anti-craft legislation in their favor, as well as tying up the raw ingredients and commodities in order to force the prices up for their much smaller competitors (or remove their sourcing entirely), even when they don't need those materials and have been known simply to dump them.

Those behaviors are why I typically choose against drinking anything owned by the macros, even if it's one of the craft brands they've bought up over the years.

I have a dream. I have a dream that one day, I will check the contents of my grain bin prior to brewing so I don't make an unintentional hoppy wheat ale instead of a blonde. I have a dream that one day this unintentional hoppy wheat ale will be delicious and quaffable, despite the last minute recipe changes. And I have a dream, ladies and gentlemen, that one day we will be judged NOT by the color of our worts, but by the contents of our kegerators!

my little kegerator has two heads- i can run two 'sixth barrels' or one half barrel...

for the summer and considering the volume we go through with people always around, i'd just prefer a half barrel of mainstay stuff... but the wife insists on strange stuff... and usually strikes out...

but not this last time.

https://edwardteachbrewery.com/our-staples/ (https://edwardteachbrewery.com/our-staples/)

their 'no quarter' is freakin' fantastic.  I mean outstanding.  Their Curlass German Lager is even better... I HIGHLY RECOMMEND if you can get your hands on it!!!
