MSU gets their first 2019 commit in 4* in state OT Spencer Brown from Walled Lake Western

Major position of need, and one Dantonio has always struggled to recruit.

So, this fellow is a rising junior right now?  He played as a sophomore and folks recruited him?

Fascinating.

Man I don't know.  Wasn't there a running back that went to USC a million years ago?  I vaguely remember that

Jason Gwaltney, who despite my memory of him going to USC actually went to West Virginia

Hell, the last time (based on composite ranking) WV produced a 4* recruit was OG Josh Jenkins in 2008 (who went to WVU), and there were two years in there without a 3*.

Before that, WR Brandon Barnett in 2004, who also went to WVU.

TE R.J. Coleman in 2002 who went to OSU, but I've never actually heard of him.

Actually Gwaltney went to WVU, but wasn't from West Virginia.  As far back as the composite rankings go, WV hasn't produced a 5*

That must have been why I thought he was from there.  I remember the Buckeyes and Trojans recruiting him a bunch.

I pray for this young man and his future back injury

Well at least it wasn't all bad.  QB Dwan Mathis, a 4* recruit committed, for MSUs second commitment.  OSU has been poking around, but hasn't offered.  That could mess things up.  He'd be Dantonio most athletic QB by far.

Michigan's 2019 class is off to a pretty good start. Rankings are still very early and a lot of this will change.

5* DL Chris Hinton Jr. (6'4, 265 lbs.) from Georgia
5* DL Stephen Herron Jr. (6'3, 235 lbs.) from Kentucky
4* OL Nolan Rumler (6-4, 290 lbs.) from Ohio
4* LB Charles Thomas (6-0, 220 lbs.) from Florida

Hinton's younger brother Myles Hinton (6-6, 320) is an early 5* rated as the #1 player in Georgia and the #1 OT in the nation for the 2020 class in the WAY too early 2020 247Composite rankings. Michigan is the early leader in the club-house there, but it's still early.

The Hinton bros. dad was Chris Hinton- the #4 overall pick in the 1983 draft out of Northwestern. He was famously the guy that was traded to the Colts for John Elway. Hinton played left tackle and left guard in the NFL for 13 years and made 3 All-Pro teams and was a 7-time Pro Bowler.

Dad was pretty good at football, and now he has two jumbo sized sons who are both rated 5*'s with offers from everyone in the country.

Apparently 5* OT Devontae Dobbs (the #1 OT in the country and #1 player in MI) wanted to commit over the weekend, but was convinced to take his time per Steve Wiltfong.

FWIW, both Wiltfong and Trieu, as well as the MSU 247 guy, flipped their pick to MSU after the weekend.

A rare bit of fresh air instead of the rush to commit followed by a decommitment.  If they can land him and Barnett, working that Belleville pipeline the past couple years will have really paid off.

Randy Moss I think.
I don't follow krootin but wouldn't be shocked if there were a few more. The Huntington area occasionally produces quality talent.

The pipeline being filled with Plan A QBs is a welcome relief to a lull following Maxwell in that department.  We got lucky Cook panned out because our QB recruiting was not going well from about 2010-2014 otherwise.
2010 - Joe Boisture
2012 - Tyler O'Conner
2013 - Damion Terry
2014 - None
UM Rivals guy

Brandon Brown @bsb_Wolverine
I like Mathis a lot....phenomenal athlete.

247 Midwest guy

Josh Helmholdt @joshhelmholdt
2019 four-star Dwan Mathis is the best #MichiganState QB commit I've scouted in 15 years.
