Off-Season Activity

Name your school's best non-national champion team.  If possible, limit it to post-1970, thanks.

Vandy - 2012
Kentucky - 1977

For Florida, I have to go with either 1984 or 2001.  The 84 team started 0-1-1, then reeled off 9 straight wins.  They might've wound up national champs over BYU if not for being on probation.

In 01, Florida lost twice - the only 2 games starting RB Ernest Graham was hurt.  The 01 Hurricanes whipped up on Nebraska that year in the NCG, but I'm certain Florida could've hung with them.

No fair limiting it to 1970. That eliminates Bama's legendary undefeated 1966 team that finished third behind cowardly Notre Dame that played for a tie against Michigan State and Bubba Smith. It was a combination of social commentary [Bama was lilly white], Bama fatique [Bama had won the NC in 64 and 65], and the love for Notre Dame that existed back then.

Yeah, well, you've got like at least a half-dozen 1-loss Bama teams to choose from since '70.  C'mon buddy, dig deep.

I'd probably have to go with UGA 2012. That team was on par with Alabama who ended up whipping Notre Dame in the MNC game. But some other notable teams would be:

UGA 2017-lost to Alabama in OT.
UGA 2007-was playing as well as anyone at the end of the season, but a few early losses, well you know...
UGA 2002-close loss to Gators prevented a trip to the MNC game that year.
UGA 1982
UGA 1971

Don't have to dig deep at all. 1977. Notre Dame (11-1) jumps from #5 to #1 by beating Texas (11-1) in the Cotton Bowl while Bama (11-1) is beating tOSU (9-3)in the Sugar Bowl. Small problem with this. Bama had opened the season beating Ole Miss 34-13. The following week both Bama and ND would suffer their one loss on the road. Bama at Nebraska (9-3) on a fourth down fake FG TD pass when the Bama DB attempted to intercept the pass (WTH! KNOCK the damn ball down!), and ND in Jackson, Mississippi to, yep, the same Ole Miss (5-6) that Bama had just beaten by THREE TDs.

Sounds like what happened to Auburn in '83, no?

I might go with 1981, HW as a soph, still had Belue at QB who could pass a bit.  They lost to eventual NC Clemson on the road in a fumblfest they should have won and then Pitt at the last second on a hail mary.

But, the 2017 edition by end of the year with Fromm obviously would be in the running.
