Title: Off Season -Covers
Post by: CharleyHorse46 on February 04, 2019, 05:52:40 PM
A radio station I listen to has been playing covers by famous artists.

We all know some of the more famous covers of all time.  What amuses me are some of the less famous ones.  But hey post what you want.

I’m sure you’ve all heard it but I just love Johnny Cash’s Hurt.

I will come back later with videos (can't post them from my current work computer) but I have the Covers channel on SiriusXM saved as a favorite because I totally dig some great covers.

A few that I hear from that radio station that I have thoroughly enjoyed and will try to post video for -   Florence & The Machine's cover of Halo, Sia's version of Unforgettable, Gym Class Heroes cover of Under the Bridge, Willie Nelson's version of Just Breathe, Kelly Clarkson's cover of Give Me One Reason (Tracy Chapman), Grace Potter's cover of Tush.

I'm sure there's more that will come to me, and many covers I have seen at concerts that I'll have to see if I can find any youtube coverage for.

This was already a legendary grooving tune:

Then, His Purple Highness slowed it just a touch, played behind the beat just a hair, and turned it into a grinding, clothes shedding heat machine!

Heresy at its finest.  Probably why he was struck down.

Agree with Gigem and Slick on Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt, that was an inspired rendition.

I like Stevie Ray Vaughn's cover of Little Wing quite a bit better than Jimi Hendrix's original.  Sting also did an interesting cover of that song.

This isn't the recorded version but an extended live version of Grace Potter's 'Tush', which is more fun to watch with her nice legs and cute bare feet jumping around the stage.

Gym Class Heroes are one of the groups I got to see live last year & truly enjoy the high energy and clean-flows of Travie McCoy. Their version of Under the Bridge is upbeat & light but I def enjoy it more than the original these days (though I have been disenchanted by RHCP for various reasons so that may be why I like this one more):

Patsy Cline's cover of Willie Nelson's "Crazy" is ok, but I much prefer the songwriter's rendition. :)

And I definitely burned out on the RHCP in about 1996.  Everything they do sounds exactly the same, and I've found it grating for the past 2 decades at this point.

Still as sultry & bluesy as Tracy Chapman's hit, but Kelly adds those extra octaves and powerhouse notes to make this one a very well done cover:

Halo was written by Ryan Tedder (OneRepublic) for Beyonce, who obviously owned that song.  But Florence Welch also has a heavenly quality to her voice and with the additional strings and harp added, she makes a compelling and angelic version of it as well.  She is another distinct voice that I admire and she really does pour her soul into her music.

This one I have seen live a few times and know it will NOT be everyone's bag, but is an intriguing cover to me.  Weezer is such a wholesome pop-rock band but to hear their early hit 'Say It Ain't So' morphed into the angsty, distorted dark rock version by Chino Moreno & the Deftones is something truly unique.

Highly Suspect is a relatively new band that has a 90's grunge nostalgia factor for me, with their sound. They are great performers, too, who opened their recent tour sets with this 80's cover of 'Send Me An Angel' by the Australian band Real Life.

Another great one I had the chance to see live last summer, after special request from our local radio station (they do a Chris Isaak game that's fairly funny), is by Theory of a Deadman.  His voice is as powerful as Isaak's and he played the piano the entire time during the live version and it really impressed me.

I like Theory of a Deadmen, that's a cool cover of Wicked Game (which is an all-time favorite of mine).

Lots of folks have covered that song, and probably my favorite is this one by Giant Drag.

"I'm on Fire" is one of my favorites. Bruce was intrigued by slowing down Johnny Cash's "train" rhythm and had been thinking about lyrics. When the rest of the band was on break during a recording session, he and the drummer kind of flipped this on tape. Obviously, it got fleshed out a bit later, but the foundations were simple.

"Helter Skelter" is a great song that took on ugly overtones after being referenced by a maniac. Similarly, "I'm on Fire" can be looked at by overemphasizing the opening "Hey little girl, is  your daddy home?" part. I think Springsteen is being poetic throughout the song and didn't mean it to be overly pervy.

Always thought that the Derailers' original song "Can't Stop A Train" was similar to the Boss's "I'm on Fire."  That might be why.

And I always interpreted that first line as him being quite a bit older, but both being of legal age, so not pervy at all.  It is interesting, however, what using a contemporary lens can do to the interpretation of song lyrics.  "Baby It's Cold Outside" is a pretty striking example of that and has gained recent notoriety because of it.

daddy back in the day obviously meant "boyfriend", not father

those lyrics back at the time made perfect sense to the public and were not creepy

folks these days are WAY too sensative and seem to search and create issues that really don't exist

Music has always been the best form of free therapy for me, as no matter the mood there is a song or artist that can match the intensity & enhance the moment at times where it may be needed most.  Feeling excited or pumped up?  There's a song for that...     Feeling depressed or alone in misery?  There's a song for that....    Feeling goofy or silly and want to laugh?   There's a song for that...

In times of loss or feeling hurt, it can be a comfort, or a reassuring hug for the ears, to hear a musical expression that touches your emotions and makes you feel less alone in pain.       In the spirit of this thread, I'll add on another meager contribution that is for a song that has a particular ache that just resonates with me.     It's power is helping me during this most-difficult week after such tragic news, so I figured I would add it on to this here thread.

Original Version of 'Stay' by Rihanna:

And the cover of it as performed by Jared Leto & 30 Seconds to Mars.   I can truly feel his emotion in this song, and as a rocker performing a pop hit, he does a stellar job at conveying the sincerity and vulnerability of the words:

Thanks for bumping this thread started by Hooky up Erin.  I noticed he started this in early Feb, right before the emergency surgeries and hospital nightmare started.  I guess it’s his last thread here.

So here’s a cover by Eddie Vedder for Jon:

He first told me about this rare disease he was coping with back in October, but I think it had been going on for some time by then.  It was scary stuff, but Jon remained upbeat about it.  He probably just didn't want anyone to be worried.

I last communicated with Jon in mid April.  He'd finally gotten my care package (that had gotten lost at the hospital for over a month!), and so he thanked me and made jokes about the hospital, typically Hooky.  He sounded on the mend.

So, this news really took me off guard, like a gut punch.  We just want to think that everything's going to work out, despite the odds.  Sometimes it does.  And, sometimes, no.

Yes 320 unfortunately I do. It’s Degos disease. There are two types (benign, malignant) and he had the bad kind. No known cause or cure. If you’re like me, you’ve never heard of it before and you’ll be horrified when you read about it.

Despite having to endure all that, Jon kept upbeat, like in his last few posts on our board. Words fail me here, but I just admire the heck out of how strong he was in facing all this.

Well we both liked Prince, but it was me you were giving the hard time.

And I think it was largely related to me loathing The Rolling Stones, and feeling indifferent toward the Beatles, while extolling the virtues of Prince.  Which is, admittedly, usually going to be a polarizing opinion on my part.

And I'm fine with that. ;)

I have a friend, Bald Greg who some of you have met, and he has similar but slightly different polarizing views.

He likes the Rolling Stones, but hates the Beatles, and also hates Led Zeppelin.  Me, I like Led Zeppelin, at least enough of it anyway.

Oh, and I hate the Beastie Boys. Like, really, really, REALLY hate their stuff in an intensely visceral way.  Except for Sabotage which is a totally rocking song but is so good, because it's actually a rock/metal song and not a typical, generic,  Beastie Boys bubble gum whiny rap.

So we always tend to start arguments with one another about which bands/songs we hate, that are very popular with most other people.  It's what we do.  And you, T95-- you serve that purpose for me here. So I thank you!

All 3 have statues on my front lawn.  (metaphorically)

When someone tells you they love/hate the Beatles but they hate/love the Stones, walk on.  Discuss ice cream flavors or something, because their musical taste has no consistency.  They probably even like Prince..

There is too much greatness coming from the 3 bands listed above to even distinguish a favorite.  Chinese water torture could be more easily endured.

One of the more uncommon bands that I include in my list of greats is Cheap Trick.  Their albums "Heaven Tonight", "At Budokan", and most of "Dream Police" are the musical equivalent of gummy bears.  Most of my other heavy hitters are fairly common, like Rush, Aerosmith, Van Halen, etc...

But when it comes to Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin - whichever one I am listening to at the time is proclaimed the best band ever.

I don't much care to listen to a lot of The Beatles music. However, they were responsible for an outright musical revolution that became the status quo that us fortysomethings know about music.

Before The Beatles, music groups weren't really that important. A publishing house would have a pool of song writers. They'd create some tunes and grab whatever talent they had on hand to perform it. The musicians were usually contracted, and only the singers were of any name value (the musicians were incredibly talented, but usually went unrecognized).

The Beatles broke that mould by being the creative force for their own stuff. They alone were responsible for crafting their own art practically from the ground up. After touring relentlessly with performance friendly pop tunes, they more or less retired from touring and began to speak their mind. Their popularity allowed them to explore styles and themes that would be considered unsafe and therefore unprofitable for a publishing house.

Bands creating dangerous art (some worthwhile, some garbage) is what we know as normal today (if "today" means "30 years ago"). However, I can see if you grew up with The Supremes or Dion (still talented artists) performing Brill Building standards, the creativity and revolution brought by The Beatles would forever ingrain them as the top of the mountain.

hopefully Bald Greg is adjusting to his different life.  God bless him.
Thanks my friend, he's managing the best he can.  He's getting a lot of support and help from his family, friends, and coworkers.  But obviously it's not the same and never can be.

One very cool thing that his team at work did, was to set up an endowed scholarship at The University of Texas in the College of Education, in his wife Denise's name.  She was a UT grad from the College of Education, and was an elementary school teacher for her 20 year professional career, so this is something that I think would be very meaningful to her.

A nice thing about the very large, Round Rock Texas-based, computer manufacturing company that both Greg and I work for, is that the company will match charitable donations to approved organizations dollar-for-dollar, up to $10,000 per year.  So not only has his team set up the endowed scholarship in Denise's name, but a huge chunk of their fundraising efforts over the past three months have been driven toward that fund, which will then get the company match on top of that.  So between his team, and other friend like me that work at the same place, plus the company match, we've just about hit the $50,000 endowment mark to fund the scholarship.

And now it sounds like the c-level executives for his organization want to fund the gap to get it up to $100,000, which would be pretty amazing.

Anyway, nothing will make up for the loss, but this is a really nice tribute and a way for her memory to become a legacy to help others.  There's nothing specific in the requirements for the scholarship other than it is intended to go to those with great financial need, but since Denise came from a very poor family in the Rio Grande Valley, I think it's likely that future recipients of her scholarship would have similar backgrounds.

Yeah, that's basically where I'm at.  I respect the Beatles' creativity both in their art, and in their business.  I don't hate them (like Bald Greg does) but I also don't particularly care for their music.  In small doses it's fine I suppose.  I'd never sit down and listen to a Beatles album from beginning to end.

And my dislike for The Rolling Stones is mostly based on Mick Jagger's voice, I think. It grates on me.  Overall their music and musicianship are ok.  One song of theirs that I LOVE, however, is Paint It Black.  That's a great tune.

Led Zeppelin I dig though, so we're cool there.  I also like Cheap Trick and I love Van Halen, so perhaps we have some common ground after all. :)

Where do you put Buddy Holly in that story, Mr. Tulip?
Seems to me that he and the Crickets were something like the Beatles before the Beatles, and they certainly took some inspiration from him.
He wrote at least some of his own music too.
Some noteworthy singer-songwriters started at the Brill Building or its equivalent.  Neil Diamond and Carole King come to mind.

Oh heck yes!

Commenting on musical trends will always risk painting with a broad brush. There were many fantastic artists and tons of creative talent employed by publishing houses. Just because they were working in teams, sharing creative duties, doesn't mean they weren't talented or their compositions should be discounted. They still sought out the best, and they usually got it.

The Beatles represented a shift in where the creative force would lay. Frank Sinatra did the same thing when he declared that his talent was sufficient that he should be the focus of the music - rather than the orchestra leader which was the standard for the time. Frank brought the spotlight to the vocals.

"The Beatles" chose that name, in fact, because of their love of "The Crickets" (who were almost "The Beetles" themselves). There were lots of talented musicians who owned their own creative processes. However, The Beatles are largely credited with breaking open pop music from the publishers. Studios would wield a lot of creative influence for several decades (The Beatles have an agreement with a computer company, because they trademarked "Apple Music" first as their in house label) giving us Sun Records, Muscle Shoals, Motown, etc.

We used to monetize sheet music. Performers would only play the music so that customers would go buy the sheet music. Then, we obviously sold physical recorded media (records, tapes, CDs, etc). The next trend is less obvious (they never are without hindsight). Music might support itself through touring, or perhaps the era of the "music business" is simply coming to its natural end.

Record companies would force the Beatles to do some cover songs on their early albums, because that's just the way things rolled back then.  But the Beatles self-penned songs were so much better.  Except when George Harrison would bust out a sitar song.

As a young teen when the Beatles and Stones hit our shores, they made a huge impact on me.  They opened my eyes to the fantastic musical talents in this country that we couldn't hear on US radio.  I still remember when a reporter asked Paul McCartney what they wanted to see in the US and he replied "Muddy Waters".  The reporter asked where that was.  I was just as confused but I found out who Muddy Waters was later.
In '65 the Stones did one of my favorite TV shows, Shindig.  One of the conditions for appearing was that Howlin' Wolf would get to appear.  It changed my musical tastes forever.

I didn't know Willie Nelson wrote that song.  My musical collection includes two albums from Willie--Red Headed Stranger and Stardust.  Neither of those had "Crazy" on it.

I like Willie's recording of it a lot.  It's different enough from Patsy's version that it matters.  But I've heard Patsy's version so often that it's hard for Willie's to seem (to me) to be the better take.  Willie seems bemused at what has happened, while Patsy sounds heartbroken.  I'm used to it sounding heartbreaking, but maybe bemusement works better with a male singer.

And then there's this. Wikipedia--the Font of All Wisdom and Knowledge--has Patsy's version coming out as a single in Oct 1961 and Willie's version appearing in his debut album . . . And Then I Wrote in 1962.

So, is Patsy's version the cover, or is Willie's?  Or does TFOAWAK have the story wrong?

Wow, leave it to CWS to take an innocuous point I make, and turn it into a controversy.  I have to give it to you-- you've still got it!!! :)

Since the only way Patsy could have heard it, is if Willie recorded it, then I'm going to go ahead and give him the credit here.  But it's true that he didn't record a released version of it, until after she did.  Indeed, he and his representation sent it to her and asked her to record and release it.  You know, after he'd already written it.  And recorded it.  So that other people could hear it.  And perhaps record it too.  She was certainly a much bigger name at the time than he was. Which is how the business worked then.

If you weren't aware that Willie wrote "Crazy" then I think you might be really surprised at how many big hits were written by Willie in the early 60s, but released and made famous by others. Here are a few:

"Hello Walls" -- written by Willie, made famous by Faron Young in 1961
"Three Days" -- written by Willie, also made famous by Faron Young in 1961
"Crazy" -- written by Willie, made famous by Patsy Cline in 1961
"Funny How Time Slips Away" -- written by Willie, recorded and made famous by Billy Walker, and then later Jimmy Elledge, both in 1961.  But basically everyone has covered this one, form Perry Como to the Supremes to Ricky Nelson to Elvis to George Jones to Al Green and even Dave Matthews
"Night Life" -- written by Willie, made famous by Ray Price (and also Doris Day) in 1963
"Pretty Paper" -- written by Willie, made famous by Roy Orbison in 1963
"One Day at a Time" -- written by Willie, first recorded by Bobby Bare in 1965, but possibly biggest/most famous by Joan Baez in 1970

Oh hey look, it's the pot stirrer, stirring the pot. I'm shocked I tell you!

But sure, if we want to go with your incorrect take, then my original post actually fits the thread correctly.  Willie's "cover" of a Patsy Cline tune.  That he wrote.  And his version is better.  Because you're wrong.

Well, I didn't suggest that Patsy Cline recorded "Crazy" before Willie Nelson wrote it.

I don't think that it necessarily follows that Willie recorded it first, or that Patsy Cline heard Willie's recording, although it certainly seems possible, maybe even likely.  If you say that's what happened, I have no reason to dispute it, but your account seems more like a supposition than a firm assertion.  It's no skin off my nose either way.

About those other songs--I never heard of 'em.  Except for one.  I may have heard "Funny How Time Slips Away" by somebody.  Not Billy Walker, though.  But it seems familiar.  I may have heard Joan Baez' recording of "One Day at a Time," although it doesn't really sound familiar.

My knowledge of early '60s C&W is spotty to say the least.  I didn't get semi-interested in that sort of music until the mid-'70s at about the same time I discovered Hank Williams.  I remember seeing Willie Nelson albums from that period in used record racks.  Clean-shaven Willie.  Early Dolly Parton albums in the same racks.  And a bunch of guys whose names I didn't recognize.  Maybe Roy Orbison, whom I knew for "Pretty Woman" and nothing else.  Didn't ever buy any of those records, though.

I still don't know much about that music.  Once I get past Marty Robbins, whom I liked for his "Gunfighter Ballads" recordings, Hank Williams who was dead by then, Tennessee Ernie Ford, and Merle Travis, I'm in no-man's land.  I don't dislike it; I just don't know it and have never spent the time necessary to learn it.

So, what's the definition of the "original recording"?  First recorded or first released?  Is there a dead-solid way of knowing when an unreleased recording was made?

Well the way it often used to work, is the original songwriter/artist recorded a demo version, and sent it to one or more folks that might be interested in recording it.  If that person were solely a songwriter, they'd potentially sell the rights to that song to a particular artist, in order to make money, and move on to the next one.  If that songwriter were also a singer, they might license a more popular/famous artist to sing it, but retain the rights and subsequently release a version of their own.  Since Willie was a singer too, he rarely sold his songs outright, but rather licensed them and retained the rights for himself.

this is true as far as I know.

My assumption is that Willie "covered" the song, because it was his and he enjoyed singing it.  Probably live in concert at first and then recorded it to be "released".

but, Patsy recorded it for a record label and released it first.

If you think sharing my opinion that I prefer Patsy's version is pot stirring, then the same can be said regarding your opinion
We both know you are a dern fine pot stirrer in your own right

I prefer Kristofferson's version too.  By far.
It's a sad, wistful song.  Janis' crazy energy doesn't match the meaning of the lyrics, IMO.
In that initial burst of fantastic songwriting, Kris Kristofferson was as good as anybody in the business, I think.

Maybe off the beaten path, but the first part of this is the theme from Peter Gunn, a TV show of the early '60s.  I don't remember ever watching the show at the time, but I sure remember listening to this music.  Maybe all I got to do was listen to the theme.

And I guess you could call this a cover.  It's entertaining to watch, anyway.

Since the only way Patsy could have heard it, is if Willie recorded it

Others chimed in on this before I got this post finished.  Willie was under contract to RCA Victor when Chet Atkins ran the Nashville division.  Other RCA talent such as the ones you listed above could pick from the songs written by the songwriters like Willie.  Chet used to tell the story of how he had to fire Willie even though he didn't want to.  After he got fired, Willie went to see his friend Waylon down in Texas and the rest is history.

For you young uns, this is what Willie looked like in '62.

Yeah, not the best song for him.
That tune of that song reminds me of something I've heard before, but not in many ears.
Johnny Fedavo, by Marty Robbins?  No, I don't think that's it.

Another interesting story about Willie Nelson is that, not realizing Faron Young had already recorded his song "Hello Walls," Willie offered to sell it to him for $500.  Faron told him to keep his money, and also loaned him enough to cover it, and later, after Faron Young released it and made it hugely successful, Willie received a royalty check for $20,000 for a song he'd tried to sell for $500.

Always love hearing stories about the olden days of popular recorded music, and that's a fun one.

about songwriting, demos, and rights... in a minute.

here is the original:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmrnr90tvPQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmrnr90tvPQ)

here is the OTHER "original":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bA_7biyxVo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bA_7biyxVo)

i know the guy who wrote this personally- Kevin Welch.  he recorded this song on "Life Down Here on Earth", released somewhere in the 94~95 era... It had no real radio success- and radio was everything back then.

his manager gets a call one day from Garth Brooks manager- setting up a time for Kevin to speak with Garth directly.  The call happens, and it's Garth asking for the song (obviously, buying it) and telling Kevin "I intend to change it up some to fit the circumstances.  It is going to be a tribute to my father who recently passed".  Kevin said Garth was so sincere, and that he was actually taken aback by how intense the guy was that he was half afraid to deny him.  Garth took it and released it on "Scarecrow".

so who wrote it? Garth did... that's what the record and contract says.  Who wrote it? Kevin Welch.  KW not only 'won't' play it out, even in one of his house concerts, but he won't play it 'at all'.

another quick tale about Kevin's daughter Savannah- She was in Nashville under contract to write 8 songs i think it was for a label.  She produced them a good bit before deadline.  She was contacted by the label asking to amend the contract- they wanted to parse them off to performers (HUGE distinction in my mind between performers and artists) after altering lyrics a bit... so, money speaks and she does it.  those songs are now on albums of other performers with zero credit to Savannah.  she holds no grudge as that's how it works... but she made a comment or two about just how bad the songs were butchered- the labels were wanting songs about 'mad girlfriends, religion, and patriotism' at the time, and they made the changes to her work to make it happen- then attributed the changes to the performer, who is now called an artist aka songwriter.

^that's how the business works.

Garth Brooks sat in on a small bar's singer/songwriter's demo with a fella named Tony Arita- who performed "the dance"... and that was Garth's breakthrough. He didn't attempt to remove the rights.  Tony Arita made out pretty good on it.

another example:
Mick Hanly wrote, recorded, performed- and was paid handsomely for:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUc_7pZ5Zxg

of course Hal Ketchum's is the one everyone knows, and he did it better by my measure:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgDZSFZHBD8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgDZSFZHBD8)

many songs are already out- but the artists sells the entire rights away including recognition.  ask prince about changing his name to that symbol in effort to get out of a contract (which worked) or John Foggerty about his CCR days and songs... the record business is a nasty bunch without any scruples whatsoever.... some songs are written for labels, some are scouted and purchased by labels, some are written by contract by labels, and some are straight up stolen by labels.

there is all kinds of stories around of how it works and they aren't consistent- meaning it's anyone's guess where a song originated.  the songwriters who have established themselves can get bank for a hit single... a country hit single can raise in the $.5M range for the writer.  a Gospel, on the other hand, can raise $25k... and the distinction between those two is blurry sometimes... a Pop hit can raise $600k while a rap may bring up $250k.  this is single songs... a song written by the likes of the late Townes Van Zandt would cost you a fortune just to own rights as original recorder... he was responsible for the likes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SjwO17gsqU (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SjwO17gsqU)

which we all know as:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvdmxszsDM8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvdmxszsDM8)

truly prolific songwriters who command this kind of respect, and certainly an abridged list but perhaps one most folks don't realize wrote a LOT of 'other' people's hits:

Willie
Prince
Bob Seger
Ray Wilie Hubbard
Townes Van Zandt
Chris Stapleton *started out as a studio/label writer
Jackson Brown
Tom Waits
Jon Prine
Kristofferson
Lucinda Williams
Dan Penn
James Taylor
Tom Petty
Robby Robertson
Dolly (3k+ songs she's written)
Merle
Neil Young
Rodney Crowell
Rosanne Cash...

buying a song from them? gonna cost you... the chances of it hitting are pretty good.  hell, y'all, this is a short list.

Yeah, don't know if you know it drew, but my dad was the GM of KOKE FM radio in Austin in the 70s and early 80s.  At the time, the labels and producers in Nashville had a pretty tight grip on country music (they still have a strong presence of course, but not anywhere close to what it was like in the late 60s).  Anyway, it was extremely difficult to become successful outside of their circles and without their influence.  In the early 70s, my dad and KOKE-FM altered the format of the station from country music, to Progressive Country.  Several of the older singer/songwriters you listed above were part of that Progressive Country movement.

Anyway, he had a view from the radio/concert promotion side, though not the studio/label side.  But he knew plenty well what happened to songs that got bought up, changed, rebranded, and re-credited.

Honestly though, given some of the horrific changes made to some of these songs, the original songwriters should sometimes just be glad they got paid and are no longer associated with it.

Of those two, I think Arlo Guthrie's version captures the lamentation of the song better.  At least I see the song as a lament.

Here's the original, by the guy who wrote it.

There's a reason Steve Goodman never really made it as a recording artist.  He sings it almost as if it were a jingle.

My dad was the GM for KOKE-FM from the early 70s into the mid 80s.  He also bought our BBQ restaurant during that time and my mom managed the books for it, and we had another manager for the kitchen and front of the house.  So, he did both!  He's had a pretty cool life and met lots of interesting people, no doubt.

The radio station was also the broadcast partner for UT athletics for many of those years, so we had some pretty cool inside access to the athletics department.  Good times!
