Sports Writers.... who ya got?
« on: February 12, 2018, 08:10:40 AM »
I've been struggling with the feed/aggregate part of the publisher for a long time.  I'll find a feed and it will look promising, and then they'll either drop off the face of the planet or change their feed URL and make me go looking for them.  I've noticed, though, that specific writer's, as opposed to others aggregating (i.e. associated press, usa today, yahoo, fox, even SI and ESPN) don't seem to suffer these issues.

it also occurred to me this morning that i don't have to do this alone- shooting in the dark in hopes that y'all will like the content... It finally occurred to me that you guys likely already have preferred writers.

if i'm right^, can y'all provide me their names (and if possible, their RSS URL?) ... for instance, I have 'the score' on my phone which i read all the time- so, i nav'd over to their website and went looking for the writers... once an article is found, and the author listed below the title, there is usually an rss icon which takes you to that specific writer's rss feed... that is what i'd like to have for the writer's y'all prefer... i'll include them in the aggregate part of the publisher and show their articles here.

any contributions?

thanks, y'all.

awesome!!  that's exactly what i'm looking for.... I didn't find the author's specific feed, but i did find (and included in the half-hour update) a podcast for pick-six Omaha, and Omaha insider...

so it looks like Nebraska is ahead in this operation!

These guys are good. Jesse Temple went there from ESPN when they went through their slash and burn.. He's much better now.

Jeff Potrykus from the Milwaukee paper is also good.

@ELA has a future in this if he wants to reach for it.

I don't care to brag, and because we only built this place and I didn't man it, but this site is catching traction and being beat up on the indexes.... meaning- it's being found by the general masses whether they are joining or not.  a lot of the stuff posted here is being read (and talked about) elsewhere.  we're doing a helluva lot better just crossing the first year than i ever would have expected.

We need original writers.  I swear to you, if I had the time (and 'time' is my most precious commodity) i'd take the material you guys discuss and carve it into articles that other sites and even broadcasters would kill for... (not really, but they'd absolutely syndicate them)... articles such as 'helmet schools- who are they' and even the 'coaching changes- what it means' would cast far and wide, and i've little doubt folks would come back for more.  problem: i can't write worth a damn as y'all well know, which means all i'd do is destroy the value of the source.

and here is something that may as well be plopped here, that is serendipity or at least auspicious:

has anyone seen the NCAA's new promo?  i didn't even think about it when i snatched up this domain name... i didn't even realize CFB would be celebrating 150 years until i saw the advert... but.... CFB is 150 years old, and the NCAA is in full out exploit mode with CFB150, to include cfb150.com (still under devel, but licensed under the NCAA)... this site's name will draw traffic from that with little doubt, but to hedge the bet some, i purchased a few minutes ago 'cfb-150.com' which i'll point here.  that will also bring traffic.

right now we have a 25% bounce rate, meaning 25% of the folks who land on the page bounce out within 7 seconds.  The average session's length is 12 minute's.  these metrics mean little to me, but are heavily weighted by interwebz machinations.... this means we have a lot longer than most websites (a 'good' comparable site has a bounce rate of >60% and 3 minutes) to 'capture' users... we're doing exceedingly well with that... what we need, though, are folks who come here on purpose after they've initially found us.

we do that^ with original content... furthermore, whomever writes and presents will have an audience immediately, instead of scuttling around trying to find places to print or attempting to start their own blog or something... this is a special and rare opportunity for someone who wishes to contribute.  atop that- i'll set whomever up with an account on the publisher and they can publish under a pen name if they wish, so as not to endure possible ridicule from us here (which is inevitable when offering opinion's).

for the time being, however, just having a good source of material such as specific writer's is a good thing.... and why i asked for them.

@FearlessF , that site is locked up tight- no RSS or API feeds from it or any of their contributors, which is a shame as it looks like their content is very good.

Florida has 2 guys, both have done the Gator beat as far back as I can remember:

www.gatorsports.com

Robbie Andreu
Pat Dooley

They have articles and podcasts up.  Is that what you're wanting?

Sir Afro, it caused me acute abdominal pain and great effort to enforce my fingers to obey my brain, but..... gatorspports (toi toi) to the list... they should start feeding next interval, almost 28 minutes precisely from the moment of this post.

anybody got anyone else?

I finally got the feed squared away (I hope) to import images along with the articles, and hit all the sources on the list... time will tell...

if you find someone or think of someone, i'd appreciate the heads up- i'd like to get quality and quantity if i can.

Why don't you simply solicit articles from the users here on a merely voluntary basis.

I.e. if someone wants to write something, they submit it to you via email in a simple document format [MSWord, Google Docs]. If it needs it, have a separate forum where people who have the interest to help in editing can crowdsource the editing function [so it doesn't end up on one person's plate] and boom, you have original content.
