For Florida, they just need to keep doing what they're doing on defense.  These UGA receivers are probably the best they'll have seen, but Florida's secondary is probably up to the task if the front generates pressure the way they have been.  UF ranks very well against the pass in my little ypp index thingy, and is also pretty stout against the run.  What vaults them to the top of the conference in that formula is they've been very good at getting the ball.  They've got some INTs but also recover fumbles at a phenomenal rate, best in the league.  Fumble recoveries are largely luck, but causing fumbles is not necessarily, and the more you force the more opportunities you have, so it's reasonable to expect UF's defense to help field position in that respect.

Offensively, UF probably just needs the same type of game it got against LSU.  Assuming the defense is playing well, it's okay if the plays don't all work, Mullen just has to get that handful of perfect calls and Florida needs to execute them.  Neither LSU nor UGA has shown up as worldbeaters on defense in my metric so far, but they're both pretty good and roughly equivalent.  Florida needs to do what it did to LSU....drag this game down in the mud, force the Bulldogs to play their game, frustrate them and nail those opportunities when they open up.

I don't think UF can dominate this, but I can see them grinding out a close win similar to vs. LSU with roughly the same gameplan.  That's important because it isn't asking Florida to get out of its comfort zone.  If they can slow the game down, they don't need flukes to win, the chances will probably go in their favor just as vs. the Tigers.  The defensive front will be key, though....I don't think UGA's OL is going to gift them as many plays as LSU.  The performance of the Gator D-line is big, I'll say the main hinge of the the game from Florida's standpoint.

I'm wrong a lot, though.

UF has won every year in which the World Cup is played since 1986. 8-0!

Good to see both teams avoid the L in the bye week.

I think I saw UGA open as 9 point favorites.  I don't get that AT ALL.  I thought it might be 3, maybe.

Folks who bet seem to lock in on preseason accolades until disabused of those notions.

If I were a betting man, I'd call this easy money.

The line closed to 6.5.  I'd still take Florida.  This is at best a pick'em to me, and I favor UF to win anyway.

Low scoring game probably, like 26-13.

How good is Fields, really?

If he's everything being touted, it may be in UGA's interest to use him early (starting possibly?) and often... Point being that Fromm is pretty well documented at this point, but Fields still has some mystery- that, and maybe it's just something i 'think' i see, but in my observation the entire O plays with more moxy when Fields is in the game... they have a different air about them when he's behind center.

That little twist is fodder for nightmares where opposing DC's are concerned.  It also provides a layer of confusion for defensive captains and defenses as a whole down on the field as the DC's concerns cascade...

Now this is where I demonstrate my lack of understanding about this game, apparently, as i'm the sole person advocating for such a thing, but....

With two QB's as good as both Fromm and (supposedly?) Fields is, I don't understand why 'both' aren't used at the same time in a max protect shotgun formation substituting a slot WR instead of a TE (sometimes called S/G split?)... the center can snap to either of the three in the backfield, and if the player beside Fromm (presumably the center backfield player) is either Swift or Holyfield, and the other always Fields, there is not a lot of opportunity for the D to sniff out a play- it could be anything from a wildcat to an option/spread to a playaction or west coast style flag/post long crossing short, or anything in between. You'd think this would be a prevalent thing when two talented (on different ends of the spectrum) QB's are on the same team, but to my knowledge it's only been used (and then sparingly) under Steve Logan's watch at ECU 20+ years ago.

but at any rate, I would think that if UGA is worried (and they should be) they can certainly cause the UF D pause by game-planning around the QB that hasn't been seen...

Fields is talented and of course green.  I think with the current OL, he's better than Fromm, better able to make something from nothing.

Part of me worries that Florida is finally going up against a big-boy team, but then what was LSU?

The one stat I'd look at to determine a winner is UGA's number of carries.  Whether they can run on us or not, if they don't abandon it, they'll win.
Florida has been living on the razor's edge in every game.  UGA should be good enough to push them off the edge, but we'll see.

I've had a bad feeling about this game since LSU.
I just dont know who UGA is right now.
I know one thing Holyfield needs 20 carries per game minimum.

It won't surprise me if Florida's defense can do to UGA what LSU did.  It will surprise me if their offense can.

I don't know which way it will go, but I favor UF if the game is a sloppy grinder, UGA if it's not close.

Well Burrow threw 30 passes.  I'm not sure UF wants to do that anyway.  If Florida can run on UGA, forget it.  Perine & Scarlett are good enough to make it a 17-6 win or something like that.  If Florida has to pass too many times when it doesn't want to, then UGA has the upper hand.

The 5 times Fla-Ga were both top-10 like they are in 2018:

1976
#7 Georgia 41
#10 Florida 27
"Fourth and Dumb"

1983
#4 Georgia 10
#9 Florida 9

1984
#10 Florida 27
#8 Georgia 0

1999
#5 Florida 34
#10 Georgia 14

2008
#5 Florida 49
#8 Georgia 10

Georgia leads the all-time series by 8 games.  Before Spurrier, they led by 22.

I thought there would be more than 5 instances of both teams being top-10 for this game.

Just makes you realize how insane this stat is:
For all 12 games Florida and FSU played each other in the 90s, both were ranked in the top 10.  A game played in late November, so not the benefactor of preseason rankings.  Just nuts.

Yeah, when UGA is "up", UF has tended to be somewhat "down", and vv, it appears.

UGA rarely made it to the top ten between 1984 and 2003 as I recall.  That included the Spurrier era.

Then the Dawgs got more consistent under Richt and Florida drifted a bit.

The FSU-UF numbers are a bit of a surprise but make sense.
