Title: TX-OU. The Red River Shootout. The best rivalry game in all of football.
Post by: utee94 on September 30, 2018, 12:16:25 PM
Well, here we are.  Texas looks a little better than the past few years, and OU is undefeated as expected at this point.

College Gameday is back in Dallas for the first time in forever.

Half the stadium wears orange, the other half wears red and has no teeth.

So here we are.  Hate week, bitches.  Bring it.

I'm normally all doom and gloom about this game, at least for the past decade or so, and it's not sandbagging, I promise you that much.  Texas has been demonstrably horrible for most of that time period.

Even so, the Horns have played OU tough despite being a much worse team, for the past several years, including one inexplicable win with what was probably Charlie Strong's worst team at Texas, which is saying something, as he was an historically awful coach in Austin.

This year I like the way the Horns have put together a bit of an identity, and I like the way the Horns have played up to their better competition in the TCU and USC games.

Don't get me wrong, OU is a lot better than either of those teams, but I think Texas has a decent shot at winning this game.  If not now, when?  If not Texas, who?

Or something like that.

Hook 'em horns and OU sucks!

Texas heading north for their annual whuppin' ... nice to see them all confident and thinking they're gonna win.  All that DOUMED talk the past few years had really gotten old.

And, I guess OU should be worried, because the Horny Bevos have a won a few games and are happy with their still fairly new leadership, in the form of Coach Herman

The opening line on the RRS favors OU by 7.5

Normally it figures that OU will win this game

but that iqnores the RRS factor

and the fact that the football gods are pretty mad at Fred right now

after he said they dont exist

anyway it should be interesting

The way they’ve been incurring their wrath on the Horns starting in 2009 with the Bama MNC game has definitely got my attention.

Question whether the Horns have fully paid for whatever it is the po’d the FG’s so much.  Guess we’ll find out soon enough

Sigh, jeez cousin drink some coffee.  Not W but U

D-OU-MED

Now, as a math type guy, you might see this as the differential of an OU medical degree, which when integrated could become a full fledged OU-educated physician, such as my dear dad was, but I meant it much more simply than that, which is just that embedded in your "doom," OU lurks.

That is all.  Harmless ... particularly since I think the Horns are gonna win this year (just between you and me and well the rest of the porch).

I look and see Texas hunting down running QBs and killing them. I think this is gonna limit OU's offense. I see Kyler Murray is 4' 7", and realize this is gonna be like hunting down Darren Sproles all over again.

I want to believe the Texas offense put some oddball gadget plays on the field against KSU just to mess with the Sooners prep, but realize it's because our usual OC was hospitalized, and the grad assistant calling plays was playing Overwatch during the game instead.

Well, I guess in some accents, like maybe if you were from Gawga, maybe.  But try this on for size:
dOUmed defined: OU will go thrOUgh the Texas Defense, turning the yOUthful Texas backfield into a sOUp of confusion, a veritable gOUlash of orange and rOUge, as the Sooners make crossing the Texas goal line a rOUtine happening all game, wOUnding the Longhorn pride, all the while OU's endlessly uncOUth band will fill the Cotton Bowl with Boomer Sooner accOUstics, and Texas fans will leave Dallas once again a highly chastened grOUp of forlornhorns.

I just realized something that might explain how we see "OU" differently, pronunciation wise.

When I see OU, I think Oh-You Sooners ... it's all OOOOO, as in half of OOOOO and AHHHH.  An expression of joy, of wonderment, and one might even say, of delight.

But when a Texas fan sees the "OU", I'm guessing s/he mainly sees it as one big

OUCH

Which of course (and there's a third pronunciation of "OU" in course), is a whole 'nother perspective.  So, I get it.

But when I see DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED from a Texas fan, inside it triggers an OOOOO and an AHHHH and so lurking in Doomed for Texas is most certainly an OU.

Of all moments, your senile old brain picks THIS one to remember you coined it? ;)
I believe it was in reference to our 1999 cadre of DBs, was it not?  A couple of those guys turned out to be not-so-horrible...

OU has made me say ouch. Possibly even as much as anybody (except maybe UofH - it’s close) but Ouch is not the word I think of whenI think of OU because the ouchies were confined to 1971-1974 and 2000-2004.

Yes, I am aware OU beat Texas badly at other times but those defeats came when OU had arguably the superior team and those blows are tempered by almost as many or more years when Texas upset the arguably superior OU team.

The problems with 1971-1974 and 2000-2004 was that aside from OU beating Texas’ skull in, Texas otherwise had what we assumed to be good teams.

2000 and 2003 were particularly galling to me.

But what are we talking about?  A handful of games over decades.

Like I said, UofH (and UCLA) have done that too.

It’s life.

A really great friend of mine, a Brit named Tom Kite (I've told more than a few stories about him over the years), and I used to puzzle over why Brits (and some New Englanders) add a completely unnecessary "er" to the end of word ending in "a."  Data.  Idea.

He blamed 60s/70s English pop/folk singer Cliff Richard for it, because he did it to the word "a" in song called "Bachelor Boy."  The line goes:
"Son, you be er bachelor boy..." and it really is the oddest thing.  I don't think Cliff Richard originated the tendency or even popularized it but, much like MDT and his crazy theories about people actually liking Mississippi football, once my friend Tom Kite got going, you couldn't really stop him.

Any chance we could pound the rock on OU?  Look what Army did.

The key for Texas will be time of possession, and keeping Lil' Kyler on the bench.  I'm not sure if Herman is capable of putting together a real-man football game plan, but that's what we need.

None of this Conference USA stuff.  3-5 yards and a cloud of dust.  I would open up Sam's run game a little more this week.  Run some pistol formation to Lil Jordan.  Our OL could win this game for us.

I don't like putting this game on Sam's arm.  I believe our coaching works against our strengths right now.  A physical game is our best shot.

Here’s what I think.

After the Brits tried unsuccessfully (twice) to bring the bleedin colonist back into the king’s fold, I think decided to change the locks.

You know, like parents do when kids run away or go off to college.

It’s like, “If they jolly don’t want to be a part of cheery England, hen we’re just going to speak a different bloody language so they won’t know what we’re saying. Right?!”

We’re the ones who still speak pre-revolutionary British English.  They’re the ones who changed.

It’s like when your ex-wife drops 30 lbs, photoshops her pictures and tries to make it look like she’s having so much more fun without you.

That’s what the UK has been doing for 300 years.  Making up new words and changing old ones is part of it.

Herman will definitely come to run. If you run the football successfully, you win. For all of college football's jiggery-pokery, that fact hasn't changed in 100 years.
Texas isn't built to be Army - an offense trained to run the tripe option and only the triple option. Texas can, though, run the ball physically straight ahead through a variety of formations. If the run game is reliably grabbing 4-5 yards, we'll keep doing it.
At least until we gain 8 yards on 1st down, and someone determines that the defense will never see an ultra-complex WR reverse sweep pitch double pass coming. We'll execute it ineptly, either lose 14 yards, or just simply fumble.
For all the heat, and the fact that Texas is an emerging team, recall that the Texas offense has killed off 4 straight games by simply grabbing the ball and killing off 5 minutes running when the defense knew that Texas was going to run it. The OL can flex up and smash when it has to.

Bring the rock.  Man up.  Pound the middle.  Play tough.  Go Texas.  Beat those unwashed, uneducated, Tom Joad-like, toothless masses to the north.  Go you arrogant, wealthy, refined, top ranked university bastages.

Here's my Okie perspective on all this, which I think Bill Murray captured perfectly:

Tom Joad, a Steinbeck reference.  He also wrote Travels With Charley, wherein he said - Texas is a state of mind.  Texas is an obsession.  Texas is, in every sense of the word, a nation.

Texas and Oklahoma are exactly alike but completely different.  Texans and Oklahomans are exactly alike but completely different.

Texas needs Oklahoma to scorn what it’s not, just as Oklahoma needs Texas to scorn what it’s not.

I liked Travels With Charley but I can’t read it over and over again because Charley’s prostate issue bothers me.

There are, howver, certain books I must read regularly.

One is The Milagro Beanfield War.

I was introduced to it in college and I love its tapestry.

When I first started reading it, I was younger than The youngest characters and now I’m older than the oldest characters.

Growing up, I always liked Robert Redford (Sundance Kid and all) but I resent him for reducing a magnificent symphony into a trite little ditty.

The book is so much more than his crappy little movie.

I’ll have to check out the Milagro Beanfield War.  I’ve never read anything by the author.  I did like the movie, but then again I had no expectations having not read the book.

The Norris book looks interesting too, particularly if he was editor of the Texas Observer.

My latest arrival (two days ago) from amazon is Inglorious Empire by Shashi Tharoor.  Have only read the first few pages but he pulls you right in.  An Indian perspective on the British invasion of the subcontinent.

How to get diverse folks from ALL 50 states to agree on something in this country?

Ask them if they support Texas seceding from the union (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/05/texas-secede_n_4213506.html).

It's like the old Henny Youngman joke, where he says "take my wife ... please"

"If I owned Hell and Texas, I'd live in Hell and rent out Texas."

Just a fun quote, does anyone recall who made it?  Probably, a lot of very smart people over here, Phil.

The OU offense as usual looks potent, and that new QB is making Mayfield look like a bit of an afterthought.  Then again, the OU defense looks offensive.  Texas appears to be more of an SEC-lite team, other than the lose to Maryland of course.  No SEC team would lose to the Terps ever.

I understand this is considered to be a bit of a rivalry game in those parts, though of course it is only a local rivalry, of some note this year because both teams are ranked.  I suspect one will not be on Monday though.

OU 47  Texas 34

Little Phil Sheridan made the quote.  Not to be confused with Sherman who burned Atlanta.  I point that out because I have a hard time distinguishing Civil War generals and you know, it's just it's so darned relevant in life.

West of College Station, we don't really give a flip doodle about the Civil War.  Unlike you, we're Texans not southerners.  (Except for Willie Morris fans of course).

Interesting to see the objective/impartial enthusiasm for OU.  I suspect it's ignorance by cursory fans who look at records and recent history and jump to conclusions.

But there's a glowing weakness in this match up and it's not the Texas offense which is adequate.  It's Oklahoma defense.  It's abysmal.  Ranked 90th in total defense and 99th in third down conversion defense.  It can't stop the run and it can't stop the pass.  Mike Stoops is like a jug of milk with an 2003 expiration date.

I mentioned this to a Sooner fan friend of mine and of course he said, "Your offense could only score one touchdown again Kansas State, the worst team in the Big 12 this year.  Ha ha ha ha ha."

To which I replied, oh yes.  The worst team in the Big 12.  That has played a tougher schedule than OU and has a statistically better defense than OU.  Thank you for embellishing my point.

And while we're cherry picking, Texas also put 31 on the TCU defense that is ranked a good 75 spots higher than the OU defense.

So to me it boils down to this -

Texas has tall receivers and OU has little bitty tangle footed dwarfs at corner.   When the safeties come over to help, Keontay Ingram and Sam Ehlinger will rip a hole through the OU defense.

Ehlinger got over 100 yards rushing against OU last year.  OU had a Heisman quarterback and Texas was still wandering in the desert.  OU's margin of victory was 4 points.

There's no telling what will happen tomorrow.  Texas is too inconsistent to bank on.  Nothing would surprise me.  But anyone imagining an OU is a slam dunk hasn't taken a long hard look at their crappy defense.

My own sincere take.  Texas will win tomorrow.

Now, I say this having only watched them against Maryland and K State.  In Maryland, Texas didn't even seem to know how to tackle.  They looked incredibly lame, and on offense were really uncoordinated.  But by K State, they seem to have fixed many of those problems, and Manhattan is not an easy place to win, period.

I've watched at least bits and pieces of every Sooner game.  We have an incredibly porous defense, as you just pointed out JCG.  That is more than an Achilles heel - it's like an Achilles thigh, calf and heel.  The Texas offense doesn't impress me particularly but I think they're at least as tough as any OU has faced this year, and for example Baylor lit us up by 33.  UT has recently played at least that good, if not better.

I do think Oklahoma will hold their own on offense, and will likely have a few big plays and keep this interesting.  BUT, I've seen too many of these RRS games to think that we'll be able to run N-S.  Losing Rodney Anderson took us out of that possibility, and besides Texas always comes into this game ready to fight hard at the line.  There have been years where we've overcome them at the line and/or torched their backfield, and at times have totally worn them out and embarrassed them big.  I don't see anything to suggest though that this year will be like that.

Anyway, turnovers could change all this in either direction.  But if I were betting I'd say Texas wins this by a TD.

I'm still pondering how a rivalry based on some red river can possibly be compared in national import and significance to a rivalry that takes place coincident with a very large cocktail party.  And played outdoors to boot, with gators, not soft cotton.

It wouldn’t be the gators, but the skeeters! that I’d worry about down there in that swampy part of the country.

So, what - you tailgate excessively with hard liquor to get drunk enough so you can endure all the bug bites?  Have you guys never heard of OFF?  Deet?

And what’s the prize?  A boat oar to, what, navigate the Okefenokee?  Seriously?

We don't play fer no "prize" like some oaken bucket or oar or anything silly like that.

We play for cocktails, and beer. Skeeters that bite us fall over dead drunk soon enough.

It's a lovely name, I'll hand you that.   And it conjures an uneasiness as well.  Picture Palm Springs types in sky blue pants and sweaters, drinking cocktails while holding a putter and it looks cute.  Move the same scene and populate it with people who are renowned historically for their very bad judgment, and it's just scary as hell.

But then you see who's playing and you're like, "meh."  It's insignificant.  It's irrelevant.  It might as be Odessa Permian versus Midland Lee or the Pluto Brown Dogs against the Martian Marvins.  Who, but the local yokels, even care?

There are nine relevant universities.  In alphabetical order they are  - Alabama, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame,  Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State, Texas and USC.  Everybody else is just tagging along.

But Nebraska isn't good anymore.  Shut up.

But Georgia's really good.  Shut up.

But Florida was good in the 2000s.  Shut up

But Michigan hasn't won a national championship in ages.  Shut up.

But what about Herschel Walker.  Shut up.

Texas and Oklahoma are both relevant.  Georgia and Florida are not.

End of subject.  Next.

I think what's most amusing are:

1) The false notion that a bunch of Bud Light swilling yokels from the dirty south might actually be drinking cocktails, instead of bonging bad macroswill out of a Pennzoil funnel

and

2) The thought that it's the largest outdoor anything, when there are going to be roughly 200,000 Longhorns and Okies swarming the State Fairgrounds all day long.  There are literally more people outside the stadium than inside, and that's with a stadium that seats 92,000 fans, which is way more than puny 77,000 that the soulless NFL stadium in Jacksonville seats.

I think Texas CAN win this.  Any folks out there thinking the Sooners are going to run away with a win, haven't been watching either team, or this rivalry, very closely.
OU is favored for a reason. On offense they're better at pretty much every position, except maybe WR a full 3-4 deep.  Even though Kyler Murray has to stand on a step stool to brush his teeth at a kid-sized sink, he's still got great timing and game sense.  And a lot of weapons.  And an o-line.
Texas' defense started to gel around this time last year, hopefully we'll see it happen again tomorrow.
I never predict this game, or at least rarely.  Given the recent record, it's tough to think Texas is ever going to get the upper hand again.
So all I will say is that this year, I think Texas CAN win, and a Sooner win wouldn't surprise me, but a blowout in favor of the Sooners would.

Florida is ranked 22nd, texas 17th.  So, plus 5 for the RRR.  Of course, texas is about to fall out of the rankings, so even that is ephemeral.

On the other hand, the powerful and talented and respected Georgia Bulldogs are ranked 2nd.  OU is a mere 7th, really out of the running for anything beyond some quasi-major bowl game.  They certainly don't want to be anywhere near another game with the Dawgs so soon after last season where they got whomped badly once the hangovers cleared.

Just barely.  And subsequent to Texas secession, the city of Austin petitioned to secede from the state of Texas and remain in the Union.

Which is why it is appropriate that we sent the Aggies off to the Confederate States of America Conference, while The University of Texas, located in Austin, remained free and clear of the influences of the dirty South.

We have two P5 conferences with the word "Big" in their title.  To some, that might smack of hubris.  Maybe not.  But, it's the number after that that can be tough to explain to a Frenchman, or woman.

"So, the Big Ten must contain ten teams, right?"

"No, sorry, they have 14."

"Well, surely the Big 12 has 12 teams?"

"No, they have ten.  Folks around those parts have problems with numbers."

I think we can add that the Texas D is not good either ;)
My take is:
Adequate offense > bad defense = 48
Great offense > good defense = 45
Today adequate & good was just a tad better than great & bad.
Good luck going forward, Cousin Fred.

The game did *almost* get away, but not due to talent.  Herman started trying to put this one on ice way too early.

I do not fear a rematch in the least.

I’m really going to laugh if Texas and OU meet again in the CCG. That “One True Champion” bit from a few years ago was hilarious once TCU and Baylor tied.

Has anybody considered that Texas could very well be in position for the CFP and get knocked out by OU?

Wouldn’t be the first time those bastards screwed us.  See 2008.
But I think it’s presumptuous to count our chickens before they hatch.  Texas might be able to beat Top Ten teams but we’re also capable of losing to unranked teams too. Herman’s Cougar High teams were that way too.  We ain’t out of the woods yet.

I don't think so

a 1 loss Conference champ has a VERY good chance to get in

Maryland is 3-2 with Rutgers coming up

their 2 losses?

Michigan is looking strong, that loss might not hurt them

Temple is 3-3 and 2-0 in their conference

VERY unlikely.

I could see this year having three as possible, Clemson, Bama, and ND, but upsets happen.

We often get down to the last couple of weeks with 4-5-6- unbeatens and folks predict mayhem and then Upset Saturday gets'em.

Texas and WVU can’t both run the table.  In your scenario if Texas runs the table the teams they need to worry about are Bama/Georgia, Clemson, ND, and Ohio St.

Congrats again to Horndom.  I had a bad feeling about that game, and predicted Texas, and was right.  Damnit.

The one positive is that we’re gonna overhaul our defense now.  MS had some great past years with OU, but these days was a huge liability.

So maybe they can retool and move the defense from bad to adequate.  We’ll see.  There’s still half a season to go and OU often plays well on the back/homestretch of the season.

But one more time congrats to Texas, tip of the hat, and fine job to your guys.  Maybe the curse really is over.

The history of the Big 12 CCG is that, more than helping, it's knocked a potential MNC candidate off the perch. Our current CCG was created based on an overreaction to an unlikely (and deliberately unfair) scenario. If either OU or Texas were a team in the tie instead of TCU and Baylor, they would have gotten picked. The CFP committee deliberately skewed their logic to admit the team with 50,000 student base.

Texas played the percentages at the end of the RRS. Even a 1 in 100 chance comes up one in a hundred times, and that's what almost happened. Like Bob Stoops, Lincoln Riley wouldn't fold the tents even when he should, so he kept taking his shots. Perhaps if Texas played more aggressive, those shots would not have been successful - or perhaps they would have. The Sooners needed a furious lucky streak, and they got one (and whole host of holding penalties - mostly deserved). It almost worked.

So how many times now has Texas allowed a furious rally to give the opponent hope in a big game, only to punk them with a FG at the end?

Eh, I don’t know.  I’ve heard a lot of people say that but Ohio St had more going for them over Baylor (and at that point it was an Ohio St/Baylor debate, TCU was out of the equation) than just helmet.

It's an extra potential win over a (usually) ranked opponent of some note.  That can be decisive.

It can also be an extra loss (duh).

Actually rather than that cynical pov, my take is that he inherited Mike from Bob, and it wouldn't have been good to fire his brother without cause.  So, he was waiting for a time where he could remake the defensive side of the team in terms of leadership, and the bad defensive play the past three games, capped by the inability to stop a mediocre offense that KSU had just limited to less than 20.

We'll see what the new leadership on Defense can bring us, but I think it'll be better than what we've seen so far.

Bobby was carrying Mikey, and everyone knew it.  I was actually surprised that Mikey stayed when LR took over.

At any rate, Bob set the plate for LR, all he had to do was step in and screw it up.  He's working on that.  This is OU, after all.  However, LR is a kid.  A Kliff Kingsbury kid.  If I'm right, he should've waited till end of season to can Mikey.

Pshaw - it has nothing to do with Kingsbury or any of the other reasons you mentioned.  I'm just glad you're not OU's HC.  I don't want someone in there who's just keeping their assistant coaches around so that they can blame them at the right moment for failure.

If the defense isn't working, and if it's demonstrated so clearly as it was Saturday, then it's the right moment to make the change and try to save the season on that front.  OU still does have talent on defense, and a good coach with a new set of strategies might make some improvements.  And, it's the right time from another point of view too as OU has a bye week and so two weeks to implement a new approach.

Another team I follow, the St Louis Cardinals, dumped their manager after the all-star break, rather than wait until the end of the year, and they had a much better second half, narrowly missing the playoffs thanks to that move.  That puts the Cards about 1/2 a season ahead of where they would have been, thankfully.  Same goes here.  Oklahoma already has a great offense, and now just needs the defense to come up a few notches.  Definitely doable.  The Sooners after all are 5-1, and can still have a great season, can still win the conference, and the playoffs are still in reach too (if they win out, which is a long shot, but it's still in the realm of possibilities as long as it's just a 1-loss Sooner team, particularly if it's a single 3 point loss to a ranked team).

Your 3 point win where the Sooners held their own and outgained the Horns is proof of that. Without the -2 TO differential (actually -3 TO, but the first two were the ones that led to 10 points of easy Texas scores, and that in fact was the difference in the game) we would have won Saturday.  But there's no way Texas should have scored 38 much less 48, if we had a more strategic defense that was plugging the gaps and was adjusting to match the strengths of the offense.  Texas can be beaten, and so can anyone in the conference, by a Sooner team with an improved defensive approach.

Georgia had a pretty good defense last year, and they gave up 31 to OU in the first half as I recall.

It may not be that easy to have a good defense in t he Big 12 as defined by points allowed.

Bob Diaco, the highest-ever paid assistant in Nebraska’s football program, has a significantly smaller paycheck with his new job as Oklahoma’s outside linebackers coach.

The former Nebraska defensive coordinator, who was let go after one season in Lincoln on Mike Riley’s staff, has an annual base salary of $48,000 in his new position with the Sooners, according to information obtained by HuskerOnline through an open records request from the University of Oklahoma. He was promoted to the coaching job on Monday after serving as a defensive consultant since March.

Diaco earned a base salary of $825,000 at Nebraska, and was scheduled for a raise to $875,000 in 2018.

Diaco was promoted following the firing of defensive coordinator Mike Stoops and a shake-up in the defensive staff.

Now, Diaco will be working at least through the end of this season with Ruffin McNeill, who was promoted to defensive coordinator to replace Stoops.

“Bob has a lot of experience in very good programs and has a list of accomplishments that will help him step in and make an immediate impact,” head coach Lincoln Riley said in a statement Monday.

Stoops was the highest paid assistant on the Sooners’ staff, earning about $920,000 in 2017, according to USA Today’s latest available salary data of college assistant football coaches. McNeill earned $560,000 last year, according to USA Today.

After Diaco joined Oklahoma’s staff as a defensive consultant, the Sooners’ Riley said he planned to use Diaco “for more big-picture ideas.”

“Out here (on the field), he can’t do as much,” Riley said at the time. “But in our staff room, he’ll be like another full-time coach in there.”

At Nebraska, Diaco oversaw one of the worst defenses in school history,

Since we're now being gracious and all, Texas was clearly the better team last Saturday, notwithstanding mailing it in with 12:00 left in the 4th.  If Texas had kept the hammer down, we would have continued to drive the length of the field - like we did when we had to.

Herman did not expect to win.  Herman was giddy and overly-cautious once he realized Texas could actually win this thing.  He started icing the game way too early.  He learned his lesson.

Texas would throttle OU in a rematch.  I, for one, hope to see it.

Tom Herman is learning his craft like everyone else.

Like he said at the PC, "The football bible tells you to slow down and take the air out of the ball". However, the Sooners didn't give up (why should they) and started rolling the dice against everything. It turns out, they're really that good! When Texas started playing cautious defense, the Sooners ran right by them. Now, even in similar circumstances, those beats aren't likely to happen again, but it only had to happen once.

If the Texas offense had run wide open and got the ball picked (by a Sooner defense risking it all), Herman would have been condemned for that. There's a finer line between full open and full closed that he'll need to learn.

This lesson did not cost an "L" to learn.

IF....

If OU had not turned the ball over, they might could’ve won.

If Texas has not committed costly holding calls, it might not’ve even been close.

And there are another dozen or more lynchpin ifs.  Maybe a thousand.

But that’s why we play the games cause if ifs and buts were candy and nuts we’d all have a beautiful Christmas.

I don't think "going conservative" was anywhere near as costly as the holding penalties.  You extend just one of those drives that were killed, and Texas is a lot closer to killing the clock with little or no time left for a Sooner comeback.

But yeah, OU is pretty good.  I don't think Texas was legitimately 21 points better than the Sooners at that point, but the Horns were playing loose and well and flat-out dominated the first 3 quarters, other than the Sooners' opening drive.

Texas was the better team in the RRS game.  3 points better.  That's about all we can say for sure, with the rest being purely speculation driven by our own biases.

I was darned impressed by Texas.  Even though I had a feeling they would win the game and I think was the only one here(?) to go out on a limb and predict that, it was still impressive to see them do it.

I was also heartened by OU's comeback after all looked lost.  I mean seriously folks, we were 21 points down in the 4th Q, and no amount of "Texas played it loose" can explain giving up 3 touchdowns like that, sorry.  I think we "woulda" had the mo had we gone to OT.

But Texas answered after we'd tied it up that point, with enough of a drive to kick the winning FG and kudos to them for it.  They were the better team period, but when I see a Texas fan say that the Longhorns "dominated" the game etc, I just have to look back at the scoreboard, and say, umm, nope.  You won the game.  By 3.  That's it.  Just like we won the game last year by 5, and there was no talk from me at least about how we dominated Texas or how we were so clearly the better team and would "throttle them" if we played again - lol.  We just managed to get more points than they did, by a small margin.  That's all.  Throw out all the other if's and's or but's about it.

And now we have new defensive leadership thanks not just to Texas but really the past three games of lackluster performance, and a whole second half of the season to go, with only one conference loss, and already a good offense.  So, I'm still positive about the Sooners, and we are still in the hunt for a conference title and that's good.  We beat a tough Iowa St team up there and a Baylor team by a lot, and so we're 2-1 in the conference, which is really okay, and so onward and upward and forward, and all the rest.
