Only a week to go in Field Hockey and W Soccer. Two weeks for Soccer.

In Soccer Indiana is in the lead, but still has to play second place MSU. Barring an unlikely upset the Hoosiers will either win the RS Big Ten Title outright or split it with MSU, depending on the outcome of that game.

In W Soccer the Nittany Lionesses have a three "point" cushion that appears fairly safe, with two games to go.

In Field Hockey Michigan and Maryland are tied for the lead. The Lady Terps won their H-H matchup.

The Nebraska cross country team will host the Big Ten Championships on Sunday, October 28 at the Mahoney Golf Course. The women’s 6K race will be ran at 10:45 a.m. and the men’s 8K race will begin at 11:45 a.m.

This will be the first time Nebraska has hosted the Big Ten Championships since joining the conference in 2011. It will also be the first time that the Mahoney Golf Course has served as a championship site for cross country. Mahoney has only hosted one meet previously, the Greeno/Dirksen Invitational on September 15 of this year.

The Big Ten Championships will be televised live on BTN Plus (available on the BTN2Go digital platform and through the FOX Sports app) and will air on BTN on a tape-delayed basis at 7 p.m. (CT) on Monday, October 29. Live results can also be found by following this link.

Lincoln - Nebraska's Vanessa Bouvet was honored as the Big Ten Women's Golfer of the Week on Wednesday, Nov. 7, the first conference award of her young career and the first award for the Huskers in 2018-19.

Bouvet (pronounced BOO-vay) captured the award by tying for runner-up honors at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Kapolei, Hawaii, Oct. 31. The freshman from Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, fired a two-under-par 70 in the only round of the rain-shortened tournament, trailing the tournament champion Hannah Alberto from Sam Houston State by just one stroke.

Committee gave a lot of love to Indiana (#2 overall seed) and Maryland (#11 overall seed), but not so much for Michigan and Michigan State (both unseeded, UM with what would be a 7 seed in the basketball seeding format, MSU with the equivalent of an 8 seed).  Wisconsin was left out entirely though.

It's as expected, as I see it.  Michigan State and Michigan are solid teams, but the schedules aren't strong enough to expect a seeding without at least a regular season or tournament title.  Indiana and Maryland, on the other hand, play monster schedules that led to excellent RPIs, and they were rewarded for it.

I feel bad for Wisconsin, but #47 RPI isn't even close.  After the season they had last year, I'd have thought they'd have signed up a few marquee opponents to make sure they get in, but they didn't...

Las Vegas, Nev. – Three Huskers made the Cliff Keen Invitational finals, which tied for the most NU wrestlers in the finals since 2013. Six of the ten Huskers who competed at the Cliff Keen Invitational placed in the top seven of their weight class. Three Huskers, Isaiah White (165), Taylor Venz (184) and Eric Schultz (197) all made it to the championship of their weight class.

Soccer Final 4 tonight on ESPNU, with 3 Big Ten teams and a MAC squad playing.  MSU-Akron at 8, Indiana-Maryland to follow.  Kind of like last year's basketball final 4, where you have Indiana-Maryland coming through the strong side, and MSU-Akron emerging from the busted bracket side.

Nope.
Terps win the College Cup,
This was one of the most amazing coaching performances I've ever seen in any sport.  This team didn't even score a single goal until late in the fifth game against West Virginia.  Yet by the end of the season they were first in the B1G in goals scored.  As Coach Cirovski tweaked the lineup and strategy, they started 4-5-1 and then went 9-1-1 with zero goals allowed in the NCAA tournament.

MSU keeps beating ranked teams at home, some of them soundly, and losing on the road to bad teams.  Considering home court "advantage" in women's basketball you wouldn't expect to see that wide of a dichotomy.

And blew out #9 Maryland at home tonight, right in line.  I think they are 4-0 at home against ranked teams, all top 15 at the time, I think all by comfortable margins.
But they are 0-3 in conference road games, all against unranked teams.

Lincoln, Neb. – The No. 6 Nebraska Cornhuskers rebounded from Sunday’s defeat against Iowa with a come-from-behind 21-18 win over seventh-ranked Minnesota.

The Gophers went up 14-0 early after a pin, tech. fall and decision in the first three matches, but the Huskers won the next six bouts to go up 21-14 to seal the win. Jordan Shearer (149) started the flurry of Husker victories with his best win of the year, a 10-2 major decision over All-American #19 Tommy Thorn of Minnesota.

The Nebraska men's track and field team has been named the indoor dual meet champions by Track & Field News Magazine for the first time in the program's history.

Following a strong performance at the Mark Colligan Memorial, where the Huskers scored 172 points to sweep the meet, the Huskers surged from No. 4 to No. 1 in the final rankings of the indoor season. The Huskers posted a 3-0 record in dual meets to top Indiana (1-0) and Texas A&M (2-0) for the top spot. The NU women came in at No. 4 in the final women’s rankings.

To be ranked, a team must compete in one or more dual meets (defined as a scored meet between four or fewer teams) during the indoor season. Teams are ranked on wins and losses, marks, and strength and depth of dual meet schedule. Teams are rewarded for taking dual meet competition seriously.

The Nebraska men won the absolute - indoor and outdoor combined - dual meet championship in 2017. This year’s NU men’s squad is the top-ranked team in the USTFCCA Midwest Region and has several event groups that rank among the best in the nation. The men’s high jump is the No. 1 unit in the nation, while the 60-meter hurdles is ranked third, the shot put is ranked fourth, long jump is seventh and pole vault is ranked ninth.

Olivia Rosendahl of Northwestern University was chosen as this year’s Wayne Duke Award recipient on the female side.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Nebraska men's track and field team captured the Big Ten Indoor Championships team title on Saturday at the U-M Indoor Track.

The Husker men entered the day with an 11-point lead and led the entire day until Indiana took a 90-89 lead with only the 4x400-meter relay remaining. However, the Huskers' relay team of Givon Washington, Tony Nou, Elijah Lucy and Isaiah Hutchinson ran a season-best 3:09.12 to finish fifth, while Indiana finished eighth in 3:11.71. The Huskers finished with 93 points, and Indiana had 91, giving NU its first team crown since 2016.

“It was really exciting for the fans and for the kids on this team,” Pepin said. “I don’t know how exciting it was for the coaches because we were really worried, but I felt like that’s a great way to go in at the end to try and win the meet with the mile relay. I knew we had a good mile relay. It was exciting and really a good team effort.”

The Husker men won their 67th all-time conference title and 38th indoors. It was the fifth Big Ten title for the Husker men since joining the conference in 2012. For legendary head coach Gary Pepin, it marked his 73rd career conference title and 43rd indoors.

Nebraska track and field head coach Gary Pepin has been named the Big Ten Men's Indoor Coach of the Year, the Big Ten office announced on Tuesday. His award comes three days after the Husker men captured the Big Ten indoor title in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The honor marks Pepin's sixth selection as Big Ten Coach of the Year since the Huskers moved to the conference in 2011-12, and it is his 28th all-time conference coaching accolade. The 2019 Big Ten men's indoor title was Pepin's 73rd career conference title and 43rd indoors. He has guided the Husker men to three Big Ten indoor titles in the last five seasons.

Nebraska scored 93 team points to win by two over Indiana (91), the meet's closest finish since 2003.

I was very happy to see the Hawkeye women win the Big Ten Basketball Tournament. My little sister is exuberant on Facebook. She played for the Hawkeye basketball team in the Late 70s /early 80s. She had talent I didn't have.

And Megan Gustafson for the Hawkeyes, leading the nation in scoring last season and this season, scored 45 points. Plus she is a vacuum that picks up rebounds. She is an amazing player from a tiny town in Wisconsin near Lake Superior.

Nebraska high jumper Mayson Conner was named the Big Ten Men's Indoor Freshman of the Year on Tuesday after a vote by the league's head coaches. Conner is the first Husker male track and field athlete chosen as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year since NU joined the conference in 2011-12.

The McCool Junction native was the Big Ten champion in the high jump and earned first-team All-America honors after finishing seventh at the NCAA Indoor Championships last weekend. Conner cleared 7-3 3/4 (2.23m) at both meets, which is tied for the ninth-best mark in school history.

McCool Junction is a village in York County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 409 at the 2010 census.  Just drove through there on my way to Texas a week ago.

The most unexpected season I've followed in some time is 2019 Michigan Women's lacross. Last year, the program finally beat its first Top 25 team ever in the finale (#16 PSU) of a 7-10 season. They'd never previously even had a 0.500 season.

One offseason later ... they are 10-0 with five Top 25 wins. That win last year started a revolution. Well that ... and all the money flowing into the program is clearly taking root in recruiting.

Only beating OSU by 5 goals raises an eyebrow for a top 10 team. Particularly since it was neck and neck for most of the game until it got a little out of hand there at the end. Notre Dame beat OSU by nearly twice as many goals (9), and the Buckeyes were coming off of a 15 goal loss to Maryland (16-1) the week before THE GAME. So by the transitive property vs OSU combined with the fact that the schedule turned out to be a lot softer than it initially appeared, I would speculate that the Wolverines are probably more in the 15-20 range. I'd expect them to go 1-2 vs the three remaining ranked teams on their slate, Hopkins, Maryland and Northwestern, with a blowout loss to the Terps (>10 goals) and splitting a pair of close games (<5 goals) vs the other two.
On the other hand a win is a win, and taking down a rival on the road is nothing to sneeze at. So I have them finishing 15-2 going into the Big Ten Tourney, and then a third loss in that Tourney, which "should" of course be good enough to get them into their first NCAA Tourney. That would no doubt be a pretty good cap to their first winning season in school history. Senior Anton Stephenson claimed individual titles on vault (15.05), floor (14.40) and parallel bars (14.75). As a team, the Huskers posted season high scores on vault, parallel bars and still rings. Kind of a weird question, but what year did Penn St join the Big Ten for Olympic Sports? It just says 1990, so I read that as the 90-91 school year being their first, and that they had other arrangements during the 89-90 school year. But it could also mean that their 89-90 spring sports played in the Big Ten. Anyone know?

Well the Wolverines beat Hopkins 16-11, and just lost to the Terps 14-3. So I am a close Wolverine loss on the road against the Wildcats away from nailing that prediction (yes, I know that 5 is technically not >5, but come on). While I still believe that it will be a close game, I like Michigan's chances over the Wildcats a little better after the five goal win over Hopkins. Northwestern is coming in hot, winning five straight by at least five goals, but they have to play Maryland between now and then, while Michigan gets a tune up vs the Scarlet Knights at home. So momentum might well be on the side of the Wolverines going into Evanston.

Maryland clinched at least a share of the Big Ten Title, as well as the 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, with their victory over Northwestern. They can win the regular season title outright by defeating Hopkins at home in their finale.

Barring any unlikely upsets, the key games down the stretch with regards to Big Ten Tourney seeding will be:
Michigan @ Northwestern on Thursday 4/18. The winner should be the 2 seed, and the loser should be the 3 seed. The winner can technically still win a share of the Big Ten regular season Big Ten Title, if Maryland somehow barfs up their game vs Hopkins.
Penn St @ Hopkins on Friday 4/19. This game should have the 4th and final seed on the line.
Ohio St @ Rutgers on Saturday 4/20. This epic pillow fight should determine which team winds up in the cellar of the Big Ten standings.

The Terps are undefeated both in and out of Conference play. So far Northwestern is the only Big Ten team to lose to them by only single digits (4 goals).

If you examine their history, they have been getting consistently better, but not so much one step at a time as a two steps forward, one step back kinda thing.
They burst onto the scene with back to back one win seasons in 12 and 13. Then, they followed that up with back to back five win seasons in 14 and 15. In 16 they took that step back with a 3 win season, but then pressed on with back to back 8 win seasons in 17 and 18 where they got off to really hot starts and cracked the rankings, before getting chopped down to size by the buzz saw that is the Big Ten LC. So this season is another small step back, or a rebuilding year as some would call it. But yeah, two big ten wins in program history is a pretty rough start, although it's not exactly the easiest Conference to be an upstart program in.

Your optimism is understandable but only one of those wins is currently in the top 25 (Denver).
https://www.insidelacrosse.com/league/wdi/polls/19 (https://www.insidelacrosse.com/league/wdi/polls/19)
Big Ten Wlax
I pretty much nailed that one. Michigan had a 5 goal win over Hopkins, an 11 goal loss to Maryland, and a 3 goal loss to Northwestern tonight.
So that locks the Wildcats into the 2 seed behind Maryland, and the Wolverines into the 3 seed. So they will square off again in the Big Ten semifinals.
Penn St was able to steal the 4th and final seed by knocking off Hopkins on the road with a last second goal at the end of regulation. So they get to be blasted by the Terps in the other Big Ten semifinal.
Technically the Wildcats could still win a share of the Big Ten regular season title if Maryland loses to the Blue Jays in their finale a week from Saturday. Even if that happens, Maryland is locked into the 1 seed with a H-H victory over Northwestern, and Penn St would still get the 4 seed due to their H-H win over Hopkins (unless of course the Nittany Lionesses somehow lose to Rutgers as well).

Tough loss to NU today for WLax. Still, wow, what a break through season. This one puts them at 14-2. And to think they'd never previously had a winning season until 2019 - or even beaten a ranked team until knocking off PSU in the finale last year and now in 2019 they've claimed something like a half dozen (or more?) such scalps. Clearly they have the right coach and recruiting. Not sure of their leaders' remaining eligibility but I could see them win a conference championship in the next two years.

Rutgers dropped a home game to OSU 11-7, and will occupy the Big Ten cellar for the second season in a row. In fact each of OSU's two Big Ten wins over the last three seasons has been at the expense of the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers will close out their season @ Penn St, while OSU will host Northwestern. Both will get crushed.

Not too many bright spots for OSU these days, the two game win streak vs Rutgers notwithstanding. They did reclaim the State Title from Cincinnati, which is somewhat impressive considering that the Bearcats will play the Gators for the AAC regular season title next Saturday (both teams are otherwise undefeated in AAC play). The Buckeyes also got the Irish back on their schedule this year, after not playing a game against them for the first time in school history in 2018. OSU should have played Kent St in their inaugural wlax season as well, but didn't. Akron bursts onto the scene next year, so maybe they can begin both of those series simultaneously in 2020. The worst part has been losing to the Wolverines for the first, second and third times in school history over these last three seasons.

Big Ten Lacrosse, Week 4/5

Maryland beats OSU in OT, PSU lays a beat down on Hopkins, and Rutgers defeated the Wolverines.

So Penn St wins at least a share of the regular season title and locks up the one seed in the Big Ten Tourney, while Michigan becomes mathematically eliminated from Big Ten Tournament qualification.

All that remains is rivalry week, with Hopkins @ Maryland, Rutgers @ Penn St, and Ohio State @ Michigan.

The other three seeds vary wildly depending on the outcomes of those games.

Standings
Penn St 4-0
Maryland 3-1
Rutgers and Hopkins 2-2
Ohio State 1-3
Michigan 0-4

I was able to go to the Michigan @ Maryland softball game on Friday (the baseball team was also there, but they played simultaneously). Couldn't go to yesterday's game and today it was so miserable out I figured there was a decent chance it would be at least suspended by a rain delay if not shortened / cancelled altogether. However, they played through the rain and dominated, and clinched the Big Ten outright with Minnesota's wins over Northwestern (yes, Michigan didn't face either of them in the regular season, but they'll probably face one of them in the conference tournament championship game).

The baseball team also got a sweep and has a good chance of winning the BigTen regular season for the first time in 11 years, though they still have to play Indiana and Nebraska.

W Lacrosse

Northwestern bested Syracuse by 4 goals, while Maryland Smoked Denver by 9 goals. They will square off against one another in the Final Four.

The other semifinal will be Carolina vs Boston Col. So we are guaranteed a Big Ten-ACC NCG.

Odd that D1 has different rules than D3, who keeps the clock running once one of the teams gets up by 10 goals. Of course most D1 games are decided by single digits whereas double digit blow outs are the norm in D3 wlax. D3 had a shot clock a season or two before D1 did though, so perhaps they are used as a testing ground for new rules.

They went with the two games Sat, two games Sun format for the Elite 8, but Maryland suffered a one goal loss to Virginia today. So Virginia will face Duke in the Final Four.

The other two Final Four slots will be decided tomorrow, when Penn St plays Loyola and Yale plays Penn. If Penn State and Yale both win then the Leos will have a chance to avenge their only loss of the season.

Penn St beat Loyola by 7 goals, and Yale edged Penn by 1 goal. So Penn St will get a chance to avenge their 1 goal loss to Yale, which again is their lone blemish on the season.

The winner of PSU-Yale gets the winner of Virginia-Duke in the NCG.

A rematch of last year's NCG is still on the table, where Yale defeated Duke.

Actually, Brutus, Northwestern bested Maryland in the B1G championship game (the only Terrapin loss all year.)

Badgers had a huge 7th inning rally to eliminate Notre Dame on a two-out, three-run, walk-off homer in softball, then became the first team to beat (and even score on) Oklahoma in something like forever (snapped a 41-game winning streak, and a NCAA regionals 43-inning scoreless streak), but then lost in the second matchup, 2-0, sending the Badgers home. Still, a pretty good showing in the tourney for them.

Those were two tough games yesterday!  The Badgers are a tough, gritty team.  With great pitching from Mens (Menz?), good fielding, and two perfectly executed squeeze bunts, they broke the Sooners' long winning streak.  The second game was equally tough, again with Mens in the circle for Wisconsin, but the Sooners got a small-ball run and a solo HR for the win.
Too bad one of those teams had to have its season end yesterday.

Gopher SB dispatched Georgia today (delayed by bad weather) and will host the Bayou Bengals next weekend for the Super Regionals. The Bulldog SP couldn't find the strike zone to save her life, and one of the few strikes she did throw got hit about halfway up the light tower in right center.

Nebraska with some peculiar jerseys.   Looks like something from the deadball era or even earlier late 19th century.

9pm games are kinda late for an old fat guy that has been drinking on the golf course until 10pm

lucky for me, the Huskers were up 8-1 early, didn't miss too much

Starting pitcher Matt Waldron, making his 12th start of the season, went 7.1 innings and matched his career high with nine strikeouts. Waldron has 239 strikeouts in his career, which puts him in fourth place on Nebraska’s career strikeouts list. Mike Waldron and Robbie Palkert each came in for shutout relief appearances.

The Terps got bested by the Cats in the Big Ten Final 16-11.

Northwestern earns the autobid, as well as their first Big Ten wlax Title of any variety.

W Lacrosse

The Terps blasted the Wildcats in the rubber match 25-13, avenging their only loss on the season. So Maryland will play The BC Eagles in the NCG, Big Ten-Acc. BC beat Carolina in 2OT in the other semifinal, erasing a six goal deficit down the stretch and avenging their only loss on the season as well. BC has lost each of the last 2 NCGs, and Maryland is 1-1 in NCGs over the last three years (not making it last year). The Terps beat the Eagles in the 2017 NCG 16-13.

Penn St and, by extension, the Big Ten are done. Yale handed the Lions both of their losses on the season, and will get to face Virginia in the NCG. Virginia edged Duke by one goal in the other semifinal.

Yale is of course the defending National Champion, defeating Duke in last year's NCG 13-11.

Twin Nebraska senior defensive tackles Carlos and Khalil Davis on Friday both qualified in the discus throw for the NCAA Championships by finishing in the top 12 of the NCAA West regional at Sacramento (California) State University.

Carlos Davis finished fourth with a personal-best throw of 191 feet, 11 inches. It’s the ninth-best throw in school history. Khalil Davis finished tenth with a throw of 181 feet, 11 inches. The top 12 finishers in the regional advanced to the NCAA Championships. Carlos Davis advanced to nationals last year; this will be Khalil's first trip.

The duo, who due to participating in two sports hasn’t been home since the beginning of the spring semester, will now fly to Kansas City this weekend to be a part of their sister’s wedding. They’ll return and continue in Nebraska’s offseason conditioning program under strength coach Zach Duval.

There has to be at least one gal at Maryland that suits up for both W Lacroose and F Hockey, doesn't there?

Has to be.  I remember the year we had 3 it was a big deal.  MSU won a co-regular season title, and lost to the other co-champ (Illinois) in the conference tourney title game, and still got left out because it was a one bid league, and I feel like that was 2011?

LINCOLN, Neb. - Jordan Burroughs (74 kg) and James Green (70 kg) each won their best-of-3 series during Final X at the Devaney Center on Saturday. With the victories, both Burroughs and Green advance to the 2019 UWW Freestyle World Championships.

Burroughs, a 2012 Olympic gold medalist and four-time World Champion (2011, 2013, 2015, 2017), made his ninth-consecutive World Team for the United States. The two-time NCAA Champion at Nebraska and three-time All-American was in a battle in his best-of-three series against two-time NCAA Champion Isaiah Martinez, but won the best-of-3 series 2-1. Burroughs will now have the opportunity to become the first American in any style to win five World titles.
