I have my 5, but ranking them is so tough.
My 5, in no particular order (yet):

The one with a great D, the best pass D ever
The two with an avg point differentials of +30
The one with 5 wins over top 10 teams
The first team to ever go 14-0

how are we ranking? best team or most accomplished/best season?

cause for bama, 09 is most accomplished/best season. but, imo, 2011 was a much better overall team, maybe 15 and 12 as well. 09 is my favorite bama team, fwiw.

for best teams:

11 bama
08 uf
10 au
15 bama
96 uf

for most accomplished:
09 bama
10 au
92 bama
80 uga
79 bama

yes, being undefeated is a major boost in that ranking, imo.

but recent advances in training is major boost in prior ranking. so list are very different.

Well when it comes to this stuff, there's the obvious ideas - most dominant season (their peers for one year), if they played (recent teams big advantage there).

But I was thinking more the latter, but with a caveat that height/weight would be neutralized and the'd all be on the same level physically.  So with that, if they played, who would come out on top?  Would 2011 Bama be able to stymie 1979 Bama's running game?  Would Newton or Tebow be stopped by either defense if 08 UF played 10 AU?

Some thoughts:
It's hard not to have 09 Bama ahead of 08 Florida, since so much of that Gators team was back in 09 and lost to the Tide.  But there's what UF did to OU in 08...but there's what UF did to Cinci in 09, which is a point for 09 Bama....it goes on and on.  Harvin is on 08 but not 09 and 08's D caused a lot more turnovers.....

I find it hard to pick against 10 Auburn.  I reeeeally value defense in things like this, and AU's was relatively porous, when compared to these great squads of the past....but Newton never lost a game.  He was dominant.  How can we say, "oh but this team would've beaten him"?

I fondly remember the 92 Tide, the D was legendary. But that offense was garbage.  Barker eventually became a decent QB, but in 92....awful.  So the 2011 Tide, with as good a D, would've probably spanked them.

I don't want to look like a homer, but Florida's point differential in 96 and 08 is a big deal.  96 Florida won the NCG by 32 points vs the #1 defense that year (in a rematch game).  08 had Tebow and a good D...08 would crush 06, imo.

Imagine a RB as dominant as Herschel Walker nowadays...actually, did we see one in Derrick Henry?  Was David Palmer that special, or is he a poor man's Percy Harvin?

The 2 LSU teams don't seem special, but neither would get blown out by anybody, either, would they?  And when it comes to the 98 Vols, I don't respect them, as 2 of their games would be losses if played again (SU, Ark).  But they had a helluva running game and Peerless Price.

Okay, I guess I'll go with...
2011 Alabama (best D in recent memory)
2008 Florida (Tebow + Harvin)
2009 Alabama (14-0 is all you need)
1996 Florida (overwhelming offense)
2015 Alabama (modern day Herschel in Henry)

and I'd probably have 2010 Auburn sixth....

This is fun/challenging as hell.....

I was looking at 2011 Bama and comparing it with 2012.  And the '11 version's pass D was so good, it negates '12's uptick in offensive skill talent.
2011 - McCarron is efficient, but doesn't go out and win games.  His top WR is Maze...no offense to him, but he doesnt scream #1 WR.  Richardson had a bulk of the carries and while Lacy was good, he didn't carry the ball nearly as often.

Go to 2012....McCarron has his big year, with twice as many TD passes, partially because he has Cooper to throw to - a true #1.  Lacy is back, and goes over 1,000 yds, but so does Yeldon.  So the offensive skill talent is easily better, but overall, the 2011 team would have to be favored.

that 2012 oline was so good. i'd give slight edge to 2011, but 12 was no slouch.

The more I pick at these teams (and the other NCs), the more fun it is.

2013 FSU had the biggest difference between offensive and defensive yards per play, with 2011 Alabama next.  1997 Michigan's defensive yards per play was as good as '11 Bama's, but their offense was rubbish.
