cfb51 All-SEC team 2017
« on: December 06, 2017, 01:47:45 PM »
*placeholder*--I've included an extra LB spot so that a 3-4 could be built, and also a nickel spot for teams who run a lot of that.  Instead of a strict 11 man unit like media ballots, I'm doing them more like a total roster.  Some spots might need to be added to the O as well.

OFFENSE

QB:  Drew Locke, Missouri
RB:  Kerryon Johnson, AU
RB:  Nick Chubb, UGA
WR:  A.J. Brown, Ole Miss
WR:  J'Mon Moore, Missouri
WR:  Calvin Ridley, Bama
TE:  Hayden Hurst, USC
C:  (tie)  Frank Ragnow, ARK,  Will Clapp, LSU
OG:  Braden Smith, AU
OG:  Ross Piersbacher, Bama
OT:  Jonah Williams, Bama
OT:  Isaiah Wynn, UGA

DEFENSE

DE:  Jeff Holland, AU
DE:  Montez Sweat, MSU
DT:  Trenton Thompson, UGA
DT:  Daron Payne, Bama
LB:  Roquan Smith, UGA
LB:  Devin White, LSU
LB:  DeMarquis Gates, Ole Miss
LB:  Skia Moore, USC
CB:  Greedy Williams, LSU
CB:  Duke Dawson, UF
S:  Minkah Fitzpatrick, Bama
S:  Ronnie Harrison, Bama
NB:  Donte Jackson, LSU

SPECIAL TEAMS

P:  Johnny Townshend, UF
PK:  (tie)  Eddy Pineiro, UF,  Daniel Carlson, AU
RS:  Christian Kirk, A&M

I'll edit as suggestions and consensus comes in.

Need a lot of input on a lot of positions since I track this stuff a lot less than years gone by these days.

To start off with I'd nominate:

QB:  Stidham, AU
RB:  Kerryon Johnson, AU
RB:  Benny Snell, UK
WR:  A.J. Brown, Ole Miss

DE:  Jeff Holland, AU
DT:  Trenton Thompson, UGA
DT:  Raekwon Davis, Bama
LB:  Roquan Smith, UGA
LB:  Devin White, LSU
S:   Minkah Fitzpatrick, Bama
S:    Ronnie Harrison, Bama
CB:  Donte Jackson, LSU
CB:  Greedy Williams, LSU

P:  Johnny Townshend, UF
K:  tough choice....Eddy Pineiro, UF or Daniel Carlson, AU ?
RS:  Christian Kirk, A&M

Hardly a full roster, but clearly I've got better ideas about a defensive team than offense.

A few i would add into consideration.

Hayden Hurst TE from South Carolina
J'Mon Moore WR Missouri
Calvin Ridley WR Alabama
Christian Kirk WR Texas A&M

I don't disagree with your list on RB's based on rushing yards, but guys like Damien Harris, Nick Chubb, Sony Michel,
Derrius Guice are all better than Snell.

Drew Locke at QB. beats Stidham most every category: Yards, yards per attempt, TD's and QB rating.

I wouldn't have Trenton Thompson in there this year, he didn't have the type of year that warrants All-SEC.
Give me Mecole Hardeman as return specialist. He didn't house one this year, but ranks at the top in KOR and PR.

Roquan Smith is a bad man!!!

Good call on J'Mon Moore.  I didn't pay much attention to Mizzou, so I'll take your word on him and Locke and defer you and other votes that come in.

The guys I nominated are a bit of a blend of skill but also resume, thus Snell.  I think you're right those other guys are probably better, but he had the season to back it up, and with a worst supporting cast.  Guice, for example, sure, I think he's better than Snell, but he was hurt half the season and didn't have the year he may have otherwise, so to me Snell had the better year.  Likewise for LB, for instance.  Arden Key would be the best LB in the conference, but he was hurt most of the year and did not come close to matching last year's production (Guice and Key also did not play in a number of games, so that hurts them as well).

Trenton Thompson....you would know better than me.  I kind of put him in there because UGA was so good against the run and TT appears to be the rock that anchors that, but I'm open....I'm no UGA expert.

I will make a suggestion, though everyone can make their own criteria.  It doesn't strictly have to be about numbers.  For instance, I'm not sure what the knock on Thompson would be, but let's say he didn't have a lot of TFL and sacks and so based on that, you leave him off the list.  But let's suppose he ate up a ton of blocks, demanded double-teams every play, and consistently stopped good OL from getting out to block, then I'd argue that makes up for lesser numbers.

These are the kind of things I especially need help with.  Particularly with the east, where I didn't watch nearly as many games.

Same goes for a guy like Donte Jackson.  His PBU is fine, but his INTs are low, and he also dropped a slew of would-be INTs.  Yet CB is a position that I'm inclined to balance numbers against other factors.  Jackson was targeted very, very seldom, and that's because he covered like a boss and basically erased WRs for huge portions of games, scaring QBs off of throwing at him.  A guy like that won't get numbers to fill out stat boxes, but I'm inclined to bump him for it.

Again, these aren't guidelines, just extra food for thought.  Hopefully there's enough participation and discussion to fill out a roster.

qb - i like the stidham pick but i'll go with lock. full disclosure, i watched very little of his games, but looking at his stats AND who they came against, he came up big in the toughest games. his team didn't, but it wasn't for lack of his effort and effectiveness. vs au, uf, tenn, ark and uga, he was  91/154 (59%), 18 tds, 6 int. only bad games vs decent comp he had was vs usc.

rb - carry-on is the clear favorite here. as for rb #2, i'll take chubb. a bit of a career choice, but he had a really good year this year as well, and becoming the #2 all time sec rusher deserves some reward.

wr - brown, moore, ridley, chark and kirk all deserve a look. pick and 3 and you can have it, with brown likely the only lock based on stats alone. throw in ryan davis for au just for the stupidly good final 1/2 or 1/3 of season.

te - hurst from usc is only one i can think of.

oline - no idea, but i'd pick some combination of guys from msu, au, and uga. maybe uk as well. i have no idea how bama got 1 on the ap all sec, much less 3 on 1st team.

dline - payne from bama and thompson from uga are anchoring the middle for me. neither have the stats, but the inside guys almost never do. outside, i'd have holland and sweat from au and msu, respectively.

lb - evans from bama is similar to key i guess in that his stats suffer because of missed time. but if i'm making a best sec team, i'm not leaving him off if healthy, regardless of stats. only other guys not yet mentioned is gates from ole miss. had a very solid year stats wise.

s - homer in me, but i really do think bama has 2 of the best safeties in nation not just sec.

cbs - no arguments against those already listed. would maybe add wallace from bama as potential replacement. 3 ints, 12 pbu, 15 pass def. those are good numbers. having said that, for cb's the ones with the best stats are usually the #2 cb on their own team, and that is the case with wallace. he played really well for bama, but he was definitely our #2 cb. but if we're balancing stats with play, he's best candidate from bama here.

p - can't go wrong with either scott from bama or the uf kicker. i'll take and argue for scott all day long, though, cause i'm a homer. only allowed 4 punt returns all season, for a combined total of 5 yards. no one in sec comes close to that. (uf p is 28 returns for 306 total yards).

k - having looked at nothing, i'll take au kicker.

pr/kr - kirk gets a lot of love here, but i'll take chark.

Actually I do have a strong opinion on one OL position.....Frank Ragnow was still playing C for Arkansas this year and I kind of forget him because of their season.  Pro Football Focus is behind a paywall, so without the benefit of their play-tracking info for non-skill guys, I'm taking him based on when I paid more attention to him last couple years.  He's really, really good.

where is everybody?  Need some homers to pimp their team/guys.  Need some votes.

Florida doesn't have many candidates to even consider this year.

K Pineiro - he can kick it out of the stadium and made his last 17 kicks of the year, didn't miss 50+
P Townsend - can also kick it out of the stadium AND he's consistent

On offense, there isn't really a guy I'd nominate.  The FR RB Malik Davis was on his way, but wasn't given enough carries before getting hurt.  OT Martez Ivey - maybe I'm being too hard on him, but he's getting by on name recognition....oh he was a 5* recruit and he doesn't stink, so he must be pretty good.  Uhhh no.  He's average.

On D, I'd think about DT Taven Bryan - not great stats, but a play-wrecker for sure.  Penetration and such.  LBs sucked.  Duke Dawson is a SR that might warrant a spot, but he was good/not great.

So the kickers, basically.  Go Gators....

If I had one back in the SEC against a tough defense, it'd be Sony Michel.  Kerryon would be a close second.

The only "no brainer" for UGA would be Roquan Smith of course.

They would have some 2nd and 3rd team possibles.

I'd go with the "AP" version because I don't know all the players obviously and some center somewhere is probably really good.

Surely y'all have SOME nominations for guys on other teams...at least in your own divisions.  Does anybody here watch football?  No wrong answers guys....I'm just gonna count the votes.

Guess I should've done this on the B1G board.

Calvin Ridley who I believe will be a first team All American and a top 10 pick should be a no brainer.

Ralph Webb of Vanderbilt needs some consideration as maybe the number two back behind Johnson. I believe he is better than the Kentucky guy.

I would give all conference honors to Daron Payne before Davis. I know you don't hear his name much but he is outstanding. I would put him and Thompson as my first string All SEC dts.

I'm sorry, I just haven't kept up as much this year.  I moved down to Phoenix and don't have ESPN or anything.  I haven't watched many games other than the Florida clunkers....so I'd rather not throw names out there without having knowledge behind it.
