Quick Reply -> Standard Reply maintaining text...
« on: July 26, 2017, 06:02:31 PM »
I'm wondering if a button can be added to the "Quick Reply" window that takes you into the standard reply window, but copies all the text you've already typed.

For example, I was about to quick-reply in the beer thread, when I realized I wanted to add a link. It would have been really nice to hit a button that got me into the reply window without me having to copy & paste the text I'd already typed into the quick reply.

Is this possible?

so.... the issue i face is this page doesn't maintain a persistent connection by design- it uses a pass through and cookie.  because of that, the text you are typing in the form only exists on your computer until you hit post- then it opens and closes a passage about as fast as a camera shutter in broad daylight... it does this with the intent to reduce bandwidth and interaction with the database- and which is one of the reasons i can keep things nice and secure on here while maintaining relative speed of loading.  once 'post' is hit there is a script that filters it momentarily looking for malicious code or spamming- and handles it accordingly...

there is no way working with this engine to do what you're asking..... but.

what i may be able to do is write a tiny script that copies what's in the form on the 'quick reply', and pastes it in the WYSIWYG 'full version reply' when you hit a special button resting beside the quick reply form- the button would read something to the affect "changed my mind- full reply".. .... if that makes sense.

it sounds daunting... and difficult... and will cause bugs... and it scares the shit out of me... so- I'm on it!!!!! melikes a challenge!

however i'm going to kick this can down the road a little bit... I'll circle back around to it... right now i've discovered giving too much freedom of movement to advertisers causes ruckus and disarray- so... I gotta reign that in..

Ok, no worries. And hey, it's probably better that it doesn't maintain a persistent connection.

Take your time. I'm still more than ok with Ctrl-A / Ctrl-C / Ctrl-V

Would it be easier to just add some formatting buttons to the quick-reply window? I.e. just the basics--bold, italics, hyperlink, etc?

BTW it appears that if you hit the "preview" button from quick reply, it'll take you to the standard reply...

I just tried to implement my 'fix', and the forum engine didn't like it.... one bit... I'll try again in the middle of the night when things are quiet.

I just noticed that this is all added to the quick reply. Good work as always, Drew!

I was thinking you'd like that...

now if i can just figure out the copy and paste format issue, this thing will be alright...

It seems like the Quote function is down again.  It just jumps you down to the Quick Reply, without quoting the text.

Not that there are many round here worth quoting

i'm having a hard time getting the quote to play nicely with the multi-quote...

multi-quoting is done from the full reply page- below your input box there is a list of all the posts, and a quote function above them.

I'll try to figure out what the deal is.... this migration has been a PITA.

No worries.

I don't want any of this to be thought of as complaining.  All things considered I can't believe how streamlined this has been.

i don't take it as complaining one bit.
believe me, i want this migration and settings thing squared away more than anyone... and, i think we're getting pretty close.
turns out the issue with the quoting wasn't script side at all... last night the techs descended on this place after all the hubbub i raised, and they re-wrote the access file (which is the very first thing a browser parses- it tells it what to allow/disallow, what to run/not run and a few other things)... I had it set to force HTTPS (ssl/secured) and force www as opposed to just the domain name (without www).
funny thing... if those aren't set, google and others see four different pages.. they see an http one, an https, a http://www and a https://www.... and it will get you shot down quick like... so, i put a qualifier in there that translates to https://www so they see only one page instead of four (and demonstrates legitimacy/no spam).... and the techs last night deleted it.
so...
when you hit the 'quote' button, it was looking for a function in the https://www folder, but you were trying to get there from either a http://www or a http:// page.... no bueno...
now who the hell would have put that together?  seriously- the two aren't related... but here i've sat for the last three hours trying to figure out why some pictures aren't loading, and finally realizing the ones called strictly using https://www were loading just fine, but the ones w/o strict calls weren't, which made me realize my access file wasn't working right- which made me think of the quote function.... and, i'll be damned... there you have it.
i'm learning as i go, man... this sht is a far cry from toting a rifle, and maybe over this ol' grunts head at times.
