This might be the most underwhelming list of candidates ever.  I don't think anyone in the conference actually exceeded expectations, other than maybe Minnesota being mediocre instead of bad?  So by that definition of the award, most overachieving team, it goes to Fleck.  But I have a hard time voting for a coach who went 6-6.  I'll just give it to Urban, because why not this year?

Underwhelming group for sure. The scandal and his handling of it, both in the first weeks and for months after (all falling within the purview of modern coaching), disqualifies Meyer for my vote at least. I don't think glowingly of Fitz or this year's NU squad, but they did capitalize like no one else over there to win their division, putting every preseason predictor on his head, which isn't much but enough for my vote.

I was the one guy who had Northwestern in my preseason Top 20, so they didn't even overachieve based on what I thought of them.  The top of their division just crumbled around them.

A "coach of the year" doesn't lose to Akron and get wiped out by Dook.

Hairball had his best season at Michigan (as HC, of course). Ryan Day went undefeated. Most teams in Maryland's situation would have been lucky to win two games. Pat Fitzgerald winning the West.... with Northwestern. UFM getting to avoid termination and write his own ending, with a wink-nod agreement (imo) to step down at seasons end.

All kindsa good storylines.

Hairball had his best season at Michigan (as HC, of course). Ryan Day went undefeated. Most teams in Maryland's situation would have been lucky to win two games. Pat Fitzgerald winning the West.... with Northwestern. UFM getting to avoid termination and write his own ending, with a wink-nod agreement (imo) to step down at seasons end.

Meh. Still lost to 2 of his 3 main rivals and embarrassed the conference in his bowl game again.

Nor does one repeatedly break university policy about reporting domestic violence and then, when being investigated, have a conversation with his Director of Football Operations about deleting evidence. A football coach of the year should probably at least satisfy those kinds of bare minimum leadership hurdles before being evaluated  for football.
Anyway, I'm underwhelmed about Fitz too. I tried to make that very clear. The truth is that no one here deserves it by historical standards. But if it has to be someone, I'd go with Fitz, Fleck or *maybe* Frost.

Brohm, Harbaugh, and Ferentz had their own football black eyes but at least have an argument. By default, Meyer may have to rank last.

But most of them played closer to their floor.
Honestly, Northwestern was actually worse this year than I expected them to be.  Problem was Wisconsin, Iowa and Nebraska were all much worse than I figured, and Purdue was about as expected.

I based my vote solely on what his team did on the field.

Iowa severely underperformed in Big Ten play,  while NW over performed in conference play.
