Title: The 5 worst bye weeks in college football in 2017
Post by: ALA2262 on April 15, 2017, 09:30:53 AM
Should have been 6 because Kansas State has the same open date as TTU in the Big 12. Interesting that 3 of the 5(6) are Pac-12. Furthermore, 2 of the next P5 with the worst are Cal and Oregon who play 10 straight games before having a bye on 11/11. No team in the SEC nor the Big 10 has a bye in November. The latest in the ACC is 11/4.

"Of the 128 FBS head coaches who led their team into the 2016 season, 83 (65 percent) had a career winning record coming off a bye. It makes a statistical case for the widely-held belief that teams benefit from a week off.

What’s often overlooked is the timing of the break. Ideally, the open date is scheduled for after the halfway point of the season, but not too late to prove ineffectual.

The following programs will play the upcoming season handicapped with a way-too-early or way-too-late bye. In one case, it’s so extreme that the team will technically play the entire regular season without a break.

It’s yet another under-the-radar caveat of scheduling."

Big 12 is the dumpster fire of scheduling this season because of implementing the CG. OOC schedules could not be changed so they had to slot the conference games anywhere they could without the extra week in which to do so. IMO, it was really stupid of them to retain the complete round robin schedule rather than go to divisions.

it's amazing that folks don't take note of these things.

thanks for the link!!!

a few years ago i had faith in a particular team to make a run.  I'd done my due diligence and determined they had a shot much greater than any other in their conference to come out ahead- due not only to components and coaching, but also schedule.  Then, I looked beyond their schedule and at their opponents schedule- and only did so because a fan of an opponent mentioned their team coming off a bye.

there was no shit four weeks in 'my' teams schedule where they were playing a quality opponent coming off a bye.  the best statisticians can only offer 50/50 in such a condition... and guess how that ended? 25/75... My team dropped to third in the conference iirc.

it's these sneaky things that can derail what are often the better teams.

great post and thread, sir.
