OT- fictional football characters

Just finished reading this and thought I would share since I thought it was entertaining.  If you watched the TV series "Friday Night Lights", then it would be more of interest.  A lot of good ribbing of A&M, which of course always delights me personally, but there's a few other jabs in there at other schools.

https://www.theringer.com/tv/2018/1/24/16925194/tim-riggins-college-football-programs-texas-am

"So let’s start in Texas. Rice is out, because Riggins would fail out the instant he so much as looked at a classroom, even with Landry to cheat off of. SMU is too preppy, Baylor is a dry campus, UT feels too much like school. Riggins is a hick, which makes you think he’d fit in at A&M, but A&M is a school for joiners—people who are really into buying into a culture—and I think the cadets and Yell Leaders and everything that makes College Station the single weirdest place I’ve ever been would freak Riggins out. Plus, I don’t think he’s exactly dying to block for Smash Williams again. I kinda like Texas Tech culturally but they’re the Air Raid school and Riggins is the least Air Raid player I can imagine."

I do miss FNL, it was a pretty good show (especially in the early seasons) and there's not really any other football-centered shows out there right now.

Do you have any favorite fictional football characters from movies or shows, and do you have a speculation of where they would have played if it was real life?

but, I thought North Dallas Forty was entertaining

My son and I watched FNL a lot
One of my favorite scenes is where Landry works up enough nerve to ask a certain girl out and she tells him she is gay
Landry looks at the girl and says "thats valuable information I could have used"
may son and I tell each other that all the time
They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.

I guess if I had watched Friday Night Lights it would be more interesting but wasn't Friday Night Lights based on a real team - at least originally?

I can't think of too many fictional football characters.  I guess I could play along with non-football characters.  Let me think of some of the less obscure characters...

Nick Carraway of the Great Gatsby.   A bit of a snob, raised by his father to overcome his snobbery, but still very judgmental at first and even in the end, despite attempts to accept the questionable behaviors of his cousin, her husband, and friend.   He strikes me as a strong safety (who can also punt), coming out of a traditionally affluent school - like Westlake or Highland Park.  I'd say he'd end up at Baylor.

Holden Caulfield of Catcher in the Rye.  Poor student, likes red, lacks purpose, resents snobs and phonies.  Inside, slot, possession receiver.  Heavily recruited by Kliff Kingsbury.  Tech material through and through.

Robert Jordan, aka Ingles, disenchanted, phlegmatic freak.  I see him in a Brecklyn Hager, LB/DE hybrid role for the Texas Longhorns.  Of course, he'll probably end up suspended and maybe even transfer to Tarleton State.

Dorian Gray from Oscar Wilde's the Picture of Dorian Gray.  QB for OU in the Jason White mold.   Never grows old.  When is his eligibility ever going to end?

Tom Joad from The Grapes of Wrath.  Killer, country boy, loner who accepts responsibility.  Sounds like a left tackle for Oklahoma State.

That's the best I can do with this topic.  Sorry.

I read the book (by Pete Gent) first.  It was a genuine tragedy.
I was highly disappointed in the movie.
I always wondered how accurate a portrayal of Don Meredith the "Seth Maxwell" character of the book was.
Not very accurate, I hope, as I always liked Meredith.  As did my mother-in-law, as she and her late husband knew him semi-well out in Santa Fe.
I also thought that Dan Jenkins' Semi-Tough was a real hoot.  I think Barbara Jane Bookman was the best character in that one.  At least the character I would have liked to have for a very close friend.

The movie stunk.  I hated it.  One of the multitude of reasons was that Jill Clayburgh was as suited to play Barbara Jane Bookman as John Wayne was to play Genghis Khan.

Even better than Semi-Tough, IMO, was Jenkins' Dead Solid Perfect.  Kenny Lee Puckett was a great character.  That book did a number on good ole Paschal High, Fort Worth, Texas.

North Dallas Forty

I read the book after seeing the movie

as usual, the book was much better

one of the reasons I don't see many movies - they suck in comparison

We can discuss books, too.  As always, feel free to veer any direction as needed to suit your conversational fancy.  It's the off-season after all.

I do read books, but admittedly the sports books I read are more biography-based than fictional.  I just happen to watch more TV than read these days, but I did already finish 1 book this year (not sports related, more about WW2).

odd that my mention of pie at the Monument Cafe didn't erupt into more than a curse on the Cafe

The Monument Cafe denied my dying mother a spoonful of King Ranch Chicken.

As far as I’m concerned, they can go to hell.

Watch Matthew McConaughey and Guy Fieri Bro Down At The Monument Cafe On Last Night's Triple D

Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, food dude Guy Fieri and his good buddy and actor dude Matthew McConaughey went to The Monument Cafe in Georgetown, Texas (30 miles north of Austin). McConaughey is a native Texan, but he's never had the Texan classic King Ranch casserole (said McConaughey, "My mom was not a good cook"). The casserole is a combination enchilada/casserole, so McConaughey suggested a new name: the bro-friendly "Cashilada."

Dern, the video has been pulled

McConaughey can go to hell too!

Bruce Benedict, Halfback.

From the juvenile-sports-fiction book of the same name, by William Campbell Gault.

Bruce Benedict plays for some Pac-8 school back in the late '50s.  Oregon State, maybe.  Single-platoon days.  At the end, he and the team have overcome many obstacles and are going to the Rose Bowl.

I probably read that back in grade school.  For about a year, all I read were juvenile fiction books about sports, mostly football.

There were several books that I believe were all from one author, not necessarily a series but closely related.  They were more about prep high school football than college, though there might have been one or two that went into college but more Ivy style.  They had similar names to Gault's books, including titles that featured position names like halfback and quarterback.  Can't for the life of me remember the author or actual book titles though.
