Yeah, I mean, I can see why he might have changed it up.  The early one you posted sounds kind of like a generic Simon & Garfunkel or about a million other pop/folk singers of the time.

But honestly I've never really loved his "low" voice because he has a really hard time with maintaining pitch.  It's clearly not his natural range, and he doesn't sing it particularly well, and now I know why.

But it does lend him more "character" I suppose.

A lot of it isn't much singing. It's low talking, plus it's drowned in reverb. Double-track and reverb are great ways to hide poor pitch control in the mix.
Just funny how some things just happen.

Roy Orbison was painfully shy, but also had really, really poor vision. He wore thick glasses that were necessary for him to see the audience. On one trip, he realized he'd forgotten to bring his "normal" glasses. All he had on him were his sunglasses.

With no choice, he hit the stage wearing his dark glasses. Between that and his quiet, shy style, the fans thought he was deep, brooding, and mysterious. After that, his manager forbade him from appearing in public or performing without sunglasses on!

I did not know most of that, but I searched for the one that said "officiall" on it.  There were several live versions available as well.

I just posted it because it talks about the "secret chord" and references chord progression.

I like all the verses, I've just never known why Cohen nor anyone else chose to do them all in one sitting.  The song wouldn't be exorbitantly long even with all of them tacked on, but maybe that's just me.

Supposedly John Cale has a version with all 7, but a quick youtube search only turned up a version with 5.  Granted, I didn't look very hard.

The Doobie Brothers just uploaded some concert footage clips to YouTube in the past few days and me and Mrs. DeT watched a couple of them last night.  I knew Michael McDonald was back with them for a few years now, because one of my best friends is his bass player when he's doing his solo tours, and my buddy was told at the start of whatever year it was that the Doobie reunion happened to prepare for a slim tour schedule that year.  Well, it's been a few years now, and I'm wondering if MM will ever do a solo tour again.....he must be liking this Doobie thing, and it keeps going, so the demand must still be there for them.

Anyway, even though I know McDonald's history with The Doobie Brothers, it's still weird to see him sit there as basically just a side guy, the keyboard player, for songs like Long Train Running.  He's such an icon in my mind that it's hard to process him being there on stage, but not as the main center of attention.  And, it kinda feels like a waste to me.  The Doobies Brothers did that song and many others like it just fine without him before he joined the band, but they don't really excel at the Michael McDonald style of music.....which is so great to me, that that's what I really want to hear if he's around.  Might as well let him do what only he can do rather than tag along in places where he's not even necessary.

I realize this is completely me-centric.  Obviously, if he wants to re-join the Doobies and they want to have him, more power to them and they're free to do what they like doing.  From a "what I would prefer" perspective, I wish he were still doing his solo material.

That said, those videos sound good.  They're old as the hills, but they still got it.  I'm 95% confident that it's not edited with a lot of heavy post-production, because I can hear the minor snags, which would usually be smoothed out with edits.  Which means they still sound incredibly good live.

***Meanwhile, my buddy moved on to touring with Reba McIntyre for a while to pay his bills.  And then she quit to do The Voice and other TV stuff.  Honestly, hiring my friend is like a death knell for touring acts.

Can we get Justin Bieber to hire him?  That would be great.  Thanks in advance!

Another thing we watched last night was Van Halen "Dreams" from 1995 in Toronto.

Alex Van Halen was wearing a neck brace, which made me wonder what happened.  Dude was sloppy in multiple spots, but I realized I don't care.  Guy probably had whiplash or something and got on stage anyway and said "F it, I'm about to go out here and rock their face off anyway."  Hellz yeah.  You show that neck injury who's boss, Alex.

Also, the Van Halen brothers rightfully garnered a lot of attention for their skill, but it reminded me that Michael Anthony really was an underrated rock bassist, I think.  He stands in the musical arena with two of the best and doesn't drag them down at all.  I think he didn't get the attention he probably deserved because EVH was so iconic, and by extension, Alex too.  Also, Anthony's mullet was spectacular.

Lol.  Back in about 2009ish or something--I was still in San Marcos but I think he had left to move to Nashville already, so whenever that was--he almost was hired for Britney Spears' tour.  There was something with her regular bassist that was maybe going to preclude him from doing the tour, so it was up in the air for a while.  He didn't much care for her music, but that gig was paying $5k per show, and that would've been a big deal for him at the time.

Shame he couldn't have ended that.....the world might've been spared extra Spears drama if he'd ended her a little sooner.

Bass is one of those things where usually, if you're doing it right, no one notices. Their butts are all grooving, but their heads don't realize why.
Drop the one and watch everyone fall over.

I kinda always wanted to be an auxiliary musician on a pop touring act. Like be the Spice Girls rhythm guitarist. Go everywhere, do your thing, play for crowds, but still get to step out and grab a burger because no one really cares who you are!

I suppose so.  I guess being a drummer, I was always acutely tuned in to the bass, and then later as an aspiring bass player (with quite a bit of progress for an amateur!), so I forget that the general population is usually focused on other things and taking the bass in mostly subconsciously.

I found this video a little while ago from when my friend was touring with MM.  Sound quality is pretty decent with some good speakers.  Having seen him three times in that lineup, I'd say it's pretty representative of his general playing on that gig.  To me, he's pretty busy, to the point where it seems like one couldn't help but notice him, but maybe that's just me.  That's the way his boss liked it, so that's the way he did it.  By contrast, his run with Reba was pretty reserved compared to this......becuz country music.  I've played with him since we were kids and it always felt to me once we got good at our jobs like he was noticeable no matter how simple or busy he played......but, again, that's probably just me.  As a fellow drummer, you know how it is.....we just *heart* bass players and probably hone in on them without thinking about it.

All true, but where I think Michael Anthony is REALLY underrated, is his voice. So many VH songs wouldn't be the same without his soaring high harmonies.

Good call.

I felt the same about Bon Jovi's Alec Such.  He probably gets a bad rap these days because most people know he was booted from the band for letting his drinking foul up his on-stage performance, and that he really only did the debut album, and though he remained in the band until 1994, all the subsequent recordings were done by current BJ bassist Hugh McDonald because Such had trouble getting good takes in the studio.

But, he also did the super-high, soaring vocals, and a lot of those songs wouldn't be the same without him.  When you hear JBJ singing lead, and often Sambora singing harmony above him, there's many times there's an even higher voice mixed in softly on top of both of them, and that was Such.  And he apparently could hit all that stuff live, too.  There's quite a number of BJ songs post-Such that I like, but he really added something to the vocal mix in their early days.

Bon Jovi was fantastic live.  I only saw them on the New Jersey tour in 1989, but it was an amazing show.  Music and vocals were all on point, and JBJ was such a dynamic and charismatic dude.

Skid Row opened for them and the music was pretty good-- they did a scorching rendition of "I Remember You" which to this day features one of my favorite guitar solos of all time-- but in general their attitude and music came off less " tough guy rebellious" and more "coddled, petulant, and whiney."  Still, solid musicians though.
