Another project for Risk Management. Scrambling to score points when you're behind is usually a pretty clear cut task. How to manage the clock, position, and ball when you're ahead is more nuanced.
Which is why football coaches still want a running game, even with all today's sophisticated moving parts. The ability to grind out 10 yards in 4 downs against a determined defense answers a lot of those questions.

Absolutely Brutal.  Our QB, Kellen Mond, went on to have a very solid career but this was his first action in a game and it was not pretty.

Our RB were having a field day when Sumlin decided to stop running them.  As I recall, we had like 300 yards rushing in the game.  Our starting QB, Nick Starkel, went down and after that it seemed like we lost our mojo.

Legend has it was decided by the higher ups to fire Sumlin after this game, they just didn't make a move until late in the season.  What a mess.

Leach ran a high risk/high reward program. They were never going to get the talent to straight up compete with the "big boys", but he ran his team at a pace that always gave him a shot to post a big win. Everyone remembers those, but they don't talk too much about the embarrassing losses to the small fry. The "no lead is safe" mantra worked both ways.
His fans ate it up, because they didn't mind losing to a joke program as long as they could celebrate a win against the contenders.
In reality, given that we all acknowledge that CFB is not and never will be an even playing field, he overachieved with his teams.  Looking at the records, Tech is about like A&M.  7-5 is kinda their norm, 8-4 is overachieving, and 9 or 10 wins is superb.  After Leach was there 2 years they won 8-9 games every single season.  Since he left, they have had very average to poor years.  Lot of 4,5, and 6 win seasons. They won 11 games once, in 2008. The last time they won even double digits before that was 1976.

I think Kellen Mond was a much better QB than a lot of ags give him credit for.  For most of his time there, he just had an absolutely awful offensive line.

And that's still a problem, from what I've seen ever since.

I think Reed could be pretty good, but if his o-line doesn't get a lot better, I'm not sure the world will ever know...

And believe me, I know all about atrocious offensive line play.  Until a couple of years ago, Texas hadn't had one that wasn't just absolutely abysmal, since about 2008.  And we hadn't had an actual good one, since 2006.

2021/2022/2023 was a wake-up call that Mond was pretty good.

Oh yeah, I kinda do remember that now.  For some reason I think I actually did not watch it.  More like something I read about at the time than something I remember seeing.

I didn't watch the game but as you might imagine it has been memorialized in meme fashion and gets referenced quite often on Longhorn message boards.

This is known as the "Pimp Stick" meme.
