Well shoot, if we're doing music from 1982, then

It was also apparently a banner year for Paul Davis (Solid Gold dancers are a lagniappe):

I knew MDT would throw out Rosanna.  It's what he does.

What song could Toto's "Rosanna" not beat out for the #1 Billboard spot in 1982?

This one:

It was the 80s.  Lots and lots of cocaine.

The early 80s were a weird mishmash in pop music.

Following the release of Urban Cowboy in 1980, Billboard's mainstream charts saw a lot of country crossovers for several years.  There was a lot of arena rock from bands like Journey and REO Speedwagon and Foreigner, which is to be expected, but then some leftover 70s folk/country was still hitting the charts, like Juice Netwon and Dan Fogelberg.  Yacht Rock is still feeling smooth and groovy in 1982 with hits from Christopher Cross and Michael McDonald, and there's quite a bit of R&B from Earth Wind & Fire, Kool & The Gang, the Commodores, Quincy Jones.

New Wave from the Cars is hitting the charts, prog rockish stuff from the Alan Parsons Project and Asia, songs that would become the signature 80s synth sound from Human League, and then just a bunch of standard pop stuff from folks like Elton John and Barbara Streisand.

And none of that includes the fact that the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra charted in 1982 with "Hooked on Classics."

Like I said, lots and lots of cocaine.

Death on January 1, 1953........... The Events: While traveling to a show in Canton, Ohio, Williams was heavily mixing alcohol with prescription chloral hydrate and received morphine injections from a doctor shortly before the trip. The Cause: He died in the back of his car at the age of 29. While the official autopsy cited heart failure, historians and medical views widely attribute his death to an accidental overdose brought on by the toxic combination of alcohol, morphine, and sedatives

President Harry S. Truman said: “The fundamental basis of this nation’s laws was given to Moses on the Mount.  The fundamental basis of our Bill of Rights comes from the teachings…  If we don't have the proper fundamental moral background, we will finally wind up with a totalitarian government which does not believe in rights for anybody except the state.

Most folks recall this as a 1987 mega-hit that reached #1 on the Billboard charts.

But I'm doing 1982 right now.  And this song was actually released in 1982 where it hit #37 on the British charts, but didn't chart at all in the US until 5 years later.

So here is a 1987 1982 hit:

Not the only time I've heard of something like that, but it's always interesting and a little puzzling as to why it takes something that long to catch on.  The great majority of things that don't hit right away aren't going to hit.

I guess in retrospect--to my mind, anyway--I can say that song sounds more like 1987 than 1982.  Which is kind of all the more remarkable that it was done in 1982.  But I wonder what the story is of how it got revived.  There are probably tons of things that didn't pan out at the time which could've been released later, but probably that is never considered for most songs.

That was my first thought, too, but I am far from a hair metal expert.

Yeah it could be as simple as what you suggested-- maybe the song was ahead of its time.  In 1982 hair metal was still in its infancy, and by 1987 it had just about reached its peak.  Maybe the market just wasn't ready for it in 1982 but by 1987, it was more widely embraced.
