I had no idea that version existed.  My pops was there in Luckenbach at the recording of Viva Terlingua back in 1973, so that's the only version that was allowed in our household.

Just kidding.  It just never came up.  Jerry Jeff's is the version you'd hear on Austin radio.

Listening to an album this morning that I think is an overlooked gem, Robbie Robertson's 1987 debut self-titled effort.  He was originally a guitarist for Bob Dylan who went on to be a founding member of The Band.  Probably about 10 years after they broke up, he started doing solo albums.  

It's reminiscent of a lot of different things I like, so that's probably why I like it.  The track below should immediately make you think "Wait, who am I listening to?" because it's one of two on this album that U2 in its entirety guests on.  The Edge's guitar intro is immediately identifiable, and of course you can't miss Bono in the background.  But it's not just them, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. are the rhythm section as well.

The first track once made me remark to my wife that it sounded kinda Peter Gabriel-y, and she agreed.  So I looked it up, and was surprised to learn that actually is Gabriel goofing around on the background vocals.  Several tracks have Manu Katche on drums, who I always think of as "Sting's drummer from Nothing Like The Sun, which is where I first heard Manu, but he also has a very distinctive drumming style and a few of his tracks here give the album a Stingy vibe.  Another drummer used for a couple of tracks is Austin's Terry Bozzio, now a legend for his mind-bending solo work, but lest anyone forget, Bozzio was an incredible "regular" drummer long before he ever turned into a creature-alien from outer space who didn't need other musicians to support his drumming.  

Anyway, I might post some more songs from this, since they're on my mind.

Holy cow.....I knew he Robertson died recently, and I remember drummer Levon Helm passing back around 2012 or so, but I just looked them up, and every member of The Band is dead.  Most of them did not live long.  Only a couple made it to 80.  Sheesh.

80 is a good run - my goal is 85

In today's world, it's not really.  But the point is most of them sadly didn't come close to 80.  Two lived to 80, and 81, I think.

I guess you could call backing up Zappa, or with Warren Cuccurulo while your wife sings wearing plastic wrap and electrical tape, "normal"....
