When the punk phenomena took off in the late 1970s, Jagger was intrigued by the prospect, even if The Rolling Stones weren’t involved in the scene. While the group have never made a fully-throttle punk record, they did introduce elements of the genre into their sound on the 1978 album Some Girls.

Jagger told Rolling Stone that the album’s main inspiration was New York City, which injected the LP with “an extra spur and hardness”. However, the punk scene in the Big Apple was another influence, with the singer revealing: “And then, of course, there was the punk thing that had started in 1976. Punk and disco were going on at the same time, so it was quite an interesting period.”

Rather than viewing punk as a threat to the old guard, Jagger recognised it as another chapter in rock and roll’s continual evolution. Like the Stones themselves in the early 1960s, punk challenged convention and rattled the establishment, making it easy for him to identify with its rebellious spirit.

The frontman then singled out the track ‘Respectable’ as an example of The Rolling Stones expressing their punk sensibilities. He said of the song: “Yeah, this is the kind of edgy punk ethos. Yeah, the groove of it — and on all of those songs, the whole thing was to play it all fast, fast, fast. I had a lot of problems with Keith [Richards] about it, but that was the deal at the time.”

However, despite Some Girls taking influence from New York, Jagger preferred the British version of punk to the American incarnation. He claimed: “The sort of punk scene in New York, you know, you had the Ramones and you had the New York Dolls, but they didn’t really play that kind of music … it was more of a glam look.”

Sorry.  I was just imagining telling Charlie Watts that we're gonna play punk.

Hah, Charlie and Keith were resistant

I don't feel much punk in Respectable

Van Halen's "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" was originally intended as a punk parody.  Ultimately it became one of their biggest songs, and it's one of my favorites by the band.

Thank you for jogging the memory.
When I got to see Poison open up for DLR on the "Skyscraper", I knew I'd look forward to a couple of his songs, but not enough to fully sustain a concert. I was expecting to be lost during most of it.
After Poison played, the first notes hit by Steve Vai (I didn't realize I was in the presence of a legend at that time) were for "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love". I can still recall the rush of excitement!

Someone recalled an incident in the Rolling Stones career where, per usual, Mick and Keith were downstairs in the hotel drinking (and other stuff) it up. Charlie, as was his wont, was happily upstairs in his room sleeping. Apparently, Mick yelled, "Where's my f**king drummer?!!", and someone went upstairs to fetch Charlie - relaying exactly Mick's words.
Charlie obligingly got up, cleaned his face, dressed in his suit, arranged his hair and went downstairs, whereupon he punched Mick in the nose and told him, "Don't ever call me your f**king drummer again! You're my f**king singer!", and went back upstairs to bed.

President Harry S. Truman said: “The fundamental basis of this nation’s laws was given to Moses on the Mount.  The fundamental basis of our Bill of Rights comes from the teachings…  If we don't have the proper fundamental moral background, we will finally wind up with a totalitarian government which does not believe in rights for anybody except the state.

That is a fantastic story.

I've always had a notion--YMMV--that Charlie Watts' was quite punk-rock in his attitude, precisely because he wasn't very punk in his playing.  In a world where drummers tended towards the spastic (Keith Moon) or the forceful and attention grabbing (Bonham), here's a guy in arguably the biggest band in the world who said "I'm just gonna sit back here and play the groove.  You want flash and fury?  Not on this song, pal.  I'll draw attention to myself when the music calls for it.  Until then, STFU, I decide when the drums get the spotlight."

Lol, I know that song but I didn't know it was Toad.  Or if I did, I'd forgotten.

Cool, they definitely sound like they rock.

And this is exactly the kind of "new" rock* that I like to listen to, and yet somehow I've never heard of 'em.

* I humorously say "new" since apparently they've been around since 2001...

If you're into dumb band drama, look into the Jesse Lacey (Brand New) John Nolan (Taking Back Sunday) beef. They both wrote songs about it:

We use to call those "Whoa-oh" bands, because they grouped together by sound and vocal style, and because in a lot of the songs it sounded like the singers should be singing whoa-oh kinda angsty.  In some of them they actually did.

Another one:

Back in those days, I had a mental catalog of those bands and the songs.....can't seem to remember them anymore.
