Keep away old man, you won't fool me
You and your history won't rule me
You might have been a fighter, but admit you failed
I'm not affected by your blackmail
You won't blackmail me

The World Cup approacheth!

As I follow my belove Oranje to their inevitable "not quite good enough in the end" conclusion, I've been serenading the wife with semi-constant renditions of "Links Rechts" (left-right) :

The Dutch love their double decker bright orange bus. Before the game, they rally in the street around it (like 40,000 at a time) and escort the team to the stadium - blasting that tune.
The bus will be in Dallas on 14 June.

The Rolling Stones released their 16th studio album “Some Girls”, June 9, 1978. Favorite track?

Miss You

When the Whip Comes Down

Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)

Some Girls

Lies

Far Away Eyes

Respectable

Before They Make Me Run

Beast of Burden

Shattered punk and disco scenes influenced this album.

I recently threw this song on a playlist, and neither my i s c & a aggie wife, nor my friend Bald Greg, recognized it.  They are both much bigger Duran Duran fans than I ever was, but I knew this one well back from the 80s.

One reason I like it is that it has a very early 80s Prince vibe.

I came to Duran Duran much later than their heyday. To me, they were just kind of that band that ended up on posters in 14 year old girls' bedrooms. My posters, of course, were Van Halen and Twisted Sister - a bunch of long haired guys wearing makeup. Much better.

I actually discovered a lot of great music once I relaxed my grip on metal and punk.
Including one of my favorite 007 anthems:

Yeah my i s c & a aggie wife was one of those 14yo girls with Duran Duran posters on the wall.  I was definitely far more into rock, glam rock, metal, and country.

But I still liked a lot of the more poppy and/or "alternative" bands.  It just surprised me that I knew, liked, and remembered a song, that my more "Duranny" friends seemed to have no recollection of.

Realizing that the DJ is there to entertain the crowd and play music they wanna hear, it does no good to show off esoteric acumen by constantly playing obscure cuts by little known bands of the era.
In that light, I couldn't mix a dance set without Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Culture Club, etc. Throw in Dead or Alive to keep the tempo up. Debbie Gibson if I'm allowed to slow it down.

Maybe throw in Ultravox or XTC if there's any appreciation for history.

Oh yeah in high school and college I used to DJ a lot of parties. Over the years I'd assembled a decent collection of audio equipment by shopping at the pawn shops.   I had my own mixer/soundboard, a decent amplifier, a couple turntables, a couple of CD players, and powerful (though not particularly clean) loudspeakers.  Folks liked my price because my price was FREE.  I just took my cut in beer and opportunities with the ladies.

So my sets had alot of the above, plus New Order, Alphaville, Information Society,  Dead or Alive, Underworld, Real Life, and many others I'm forgetting.  I would of course mix it up with stuff from Young MC, MC Hammer, NWA, RUN DMC, and 2 Live Crew, because I was dope.
