The song where I learned what to do if you want to do a long drum roll but you run out of drums.  At about the 6:05 mark, I learned from this as a kid that if you run out of stuff to hit but you're not done, you can just start the whole thing over again in a loop until you're good and god-damned ready to quit.

My favorite yacht-rock band, obviously, but there's enough rock-rock here to maybe even make Fearless happy.

Ah....I thought that Lou Reed song sounded familiar.  Thanks for digging this one out of my childhood and filling me in on why.  Never heard the Lou Reed song, but the Tribe song was pretty popular in late elementary/early middle school.

Why did they have to pay all the money to Lou Reed?  Sounds like they didn't get permission from the publisher to use it.

Two of the absolute best concerts I ever attended, the tour for Dream of the Blue Turtles, and the tour for Nothing Like The Sun.

While I once considered this the quintessential "get off of work on Friday" song, it mostly reminds me of a Monday night accounting class I once had.  Sometime in my junior year I had to get a certain accounting class out of the way, but all the sections were full except Monday night.  Which came on the heels of a full morning, and then a M-W 1:30 class.  With the night class from 5:30 - 8:00, it meant I was on campus all day on Mondays.  Which also prohibited me from getting any hours in at work.  Fortunately one of my best guitar buddies was in that class with me, so we suffered through the agony of two and a half hours of accounting drudgery together.  By the end of it we were so ready to get out of there and blow off some steam that we practically ran to the car.  We'd usually find some food before making the 30ish minute drive back home, and inevitably we'd blast this song as soon as we could, about as loud as our crappy car speakers would go.

Can't imagine.....must've been amazing.  He's one of the few acts that routinely toured with the same musicians he recorded with, and those guys were all fantastic.  I have the Bring On The Night live album, which I think was taken from the Blue Turtles tour, and it's one of my favorite live albums.  Had to be pure magic to see one of those shows live.

I gave it a listen (the whole thing)
I dig it.  Didn't sound like yacht stuff to me

Yeah it's kind of funny, in one sense Toto is the ultimate yacht rock band because all of those musicians featured heavily in so many yacht rock recording sessions.

But at the same time, I don't consider a lot of their actual music under their own band name, to be yacht rock.  For example, I have no idea why Africa gets played on yacht rock stations or placed on yacht rock playlists.  It's a power pop rock anthem, not a smooth groovy yacht rock tune.  And that's true of a lot of their stuff IMO.  Power ballads and rock anthems don't satisfy the criteria of yacht rock IMO.

There's a period of time where some of their music fell into the yacht rock genre, the late 70s  into early 80s.  But on those early albums, as MDT points out there's also plenty of rock-rock, and also a fair amount of progressive rock clearly influenced by bands like Yes and Rush.

And then once we get into the early 80s, there's a pretty big shift in their music.  I'd say maybe only half of Toto IV should be considered yacht rock, and probably nothing after that album.

But I also think that's kind of true across the board for all bands-- the instrumentation and vibe of music changed, so that after maybe 1983, even the yacht rock bands and artists, were no longer making yacht rock.  Kenny Loggins, a cornerstone of the genre, clearly moved on past it once the early 80s came around and he released songs like Footloose, I'm Alright, and Danger Zone.

Just my opinions of course, but I'm always very interested in discussion of "musical etymology" for lack of a better term.

Because now I'm Questing like a Tribe does, I gotta include "Bonita Applebum". Mostly sampling the twangy guitar from "Memory Band" by Rotary Connection, it's part of the jazz groove style of college educated hip-hop from the early 90's:

which then makes you "Cool like Dat":
