Whilst working my way through these--some previously known, some not--I'm reminded that the screaming guitar solo is one of the things I most sorely missed about what music turned into in the 90's.

So, not exactly hair metal, BUT, what with:

  • me recently mentioning Steve Stevens
  • reminiscing about great guitar solos
  • utee94 recently mentioning Harold Faltermeyer
  • vibing out on the 80's
  • and utee posting that Slaughter video, which I feel like has a 90%+ chance that it was shot in the same place as the following

...I feel like this was inevitable.

I literally know more about them biographically than I know songs by them.

Yeah I miss it too and it's one of the things I'm most vexed about with regard to grunge and how it changed rock music and not for the better IMO.

Yeah that's their biggest one as far as I know.  I'll be honest, I never really got into them.

Here's a couple more "late era" hair metal bands that I think probably would have been a lot bigger if they'd come out 5-10 years earlier.  Like Firehouse and Nelson, they just came out too late, and grunge was already busily murdering glam rock by the time they were coming onto the scene.

Two more ballads, too, just for Fearless!

Were these guys hair metal?  Sort of yes, sort of no, I'd say.  Another band that was peaking at just the wrong time, but guitarist Nuno Bettencourt is a legend in the industry and reportedly Prince once called him one of the three best guitartists in rock music.

Ha!  AWB......I didn't know you had it in you.  They're just a step or so below Tower of Power on the Essential Funk Bands ladder.

Correct in all regards, I'd say.  Not hair metal, but adjacent, and close enough that they still vibe well with the bona fides.

And Nuno is a Big Damn Guitar Hero.  Exhibit A is the ending to the full version of that song, which most radio stations don't air (though occasionally they do), and wasn't in the "official" video either.  It's short, but it drives home the point.  Most guys would be considered really good to play it on an electric that cleanly.  To shred, tap, and then finish it off with chorded harmonics on acoustic?  Yeah, you're great.

Yup that's on the album version, which of course I own.  It always made me mad it wasn't on the radio release or video release.  Brilliant work.

Hair metal at its darkest?

Yeah those are some gut wrenching lyrics.

Another one, not hair metal but post grunge, that always gets me--
