It's a neat song, and catchy as hell.  It's just weird.

Also, I keep expecting him to go into the Axel F theme from Beverly Hills Cop, and when it doesn't, it perpetually subverts my expectations!

It was one of the first break-beat dancing songs I remember.

along with this from Kraftwerk, which I think is actually in the movie "Breakin'":

Dude, Beverly Hills Cop came out about a year and a half after "Rockit."

Harold Faltermeyer completely ripped off Herbie Hancock!

Never heard that before, but it's kinda cool, sans the lame vocals.

Lame vocals were a calling card for Kraftwerk, alongside their too-thin synthesized soundscape.  One of my college roommates was way into them.  I liked them okay but a little goes a very, very, VERY long way.

Nobody our age should be "way in" to Kraftwerk.
I respect what they did for the time, but it isn't something you should listen to for anything more than effect. Unless you're using oscillators and waveform generators to create synth sounds from basic electrical objects, they're best enjoyed as a concept.

Same with Vangelis. Yeah, he had some listenable hits like "Chariots of Fire" and of course "Hymne" when you're trying to sell table wine:

Yeah he was one of those guys who intentionally liked a band because nobody had ever heard of them, and the moment anyone mainstream said they liked the band, he'd be over it.

Great guy but he was definitely an early onset hipster.

This was featured in a tv episode I was watching last night:

@Mr Tulip , it appears ol' Mr. Carlson (Bun E. Carlos) never did stop putting together those TPS reports.  It's like he was an accountant by day, moonlighting as a drummer on nights and weekends to pick up some extra cash.

I see they're going to be in Shreveport tomorrow.  Shame, I'm gonna be in Shreveport next weekend.  If it had coincided, I might've tried to get some last minute tickets.

@utee94 , this was on my mind to share with you since I figured as a bit of a hidden gem, this album and the songs therein might be previously unknown to you.  This one in particular, I've thought for years was Steve Lukather and EVH.  Welp, mind = blown, world = rocked, everything I thought I knew is upside down.  I swore I read that in the album credits, and it sounds like EVH to me, but it's not.  If you're able to hear this in discernible stereo, the left channel is Steve Lukather, the right channel is Steve Stevens (of Top Gun theme fame, channeling his best EVH impersonation imo), and f*** me, the center channel is not even real guitar, according to nerds on the internet I know.  They say it's Jan Hammer on.....synth.  I'm still skeptical that a synth in 1989 can sound that much like a guitar, and especially some of the effects and "extras" I hear on it particular to guitar rigs that I've never heard a synth produce.....but wtf do I know.  I admit it doesn't make sense that two guitar players are separately panned left and right and then one of them also gets a middle balance (it would be Luke......it definitely isn't Stevens)

Apparently I correctly remember that EVH is on this album, playing bass on several tracks, of all things, but not on guitar here.  Either I'm getting old or I just failed to reed goode back when I got this.  Anyway, here's Luke and not-Eddie:

Is Zander's kid still on skins for them? I know there was a bit of a dustup over creative control when Carlos could no longer go.

Cheap Trick is one of those bands with a catalog full of rockers that everyone digs. They've had a 50 year career. Whenever the most influential bands are mentioned, everyone shrugs and sort of goes, "Oh yeah. Cheap Trick. They were kinda cool too, I guess".

I'd hate to be Rick Nielsen's guitar tech! Usually, a touring guitarist will have 1 or 2 giant locker looking things (they sort of resemble closets on wheels) that contain like 10 guitars each. Since all of Rick's are custom made and cut, they all have radically different shapes. He's famous for them. Each would, of course, need its own custom built case to transport. That means unboxing like 20 different axes, each with different scales, frets, strings, and settings. Load in would take 8 hours by itself.

Still probably easier than setting up Terry Bozzio's "big kit". No idea how many pieces it is, but I understand it takes over 20 DW9000 pedals to trigger it.

I absolutely love that album, start to finish.  It goes on brad's thread for albums to listen all the way through, no skippers for me.  It is criminally underrated....the record company gave it no support back in the day.  It was at a time when Columbia was looking for reasons to boot Toto and had quit promoting them in the states a couple of years prior, for whatever reasons, and I think that carried over with this project.  It's a pop-rock clinic with a slew of who's who pitching in on most every track.  And some really good songs, imo.  And.....it's mostly unknown.

I read that Rick Nielsen's son took over on drums from Bun E.  But, I could verify no such thing with any confidence.  I did mean to mention, dig that crazy 5-neck guitar from that video.....that is the most 80's thing I've ever seen in a video, and that's saying a lot.

I met/saw Bozzio at a clinic in Houston years ago.  I feel like his standard kit is about 9-10 pedals, but again, my confidence level on something like that is low.  It could have evolved since then, or I could be flat wrong.  I know it takes his crew a while to put that rig together.  Those guys work for a living.
