I always dug Dire Straits, notably since Mark Knopfler set out to deliberately not play as loud as The Who or The Rolling Stones.

Also, he plays mostly fingerstyle, and a unique style at that. While I need to get better with the pick (it just take a boring amount of repetitive practices), I like playing without one. Always drove my dad nuts when I'd change the attack sound in situ by smacking the strings back-handed with my nails rather than grab a pick.

Anyway, dunno how true the stories around writing this one are, but it's a fantastic duet on its own:

And also this:

Never know why this stuff pops into my head, or why two disparate things inhabit my mental space simultaneously.

I've been on a 30 year boycott of Metallica ever since they sued their own fans.

But Van Morrison is awesome and that's my favorite song of his.  I'm pretty sure I've posted it to this thread several times over the past many years.

Another favorite similar in tone and vibe to that one, is this one:

Always dug this one:

Me n Metallica didn't get along much. Always more of an Anthrax guy. Everything's better in Hawaiian jams.

Lots on my mind this morning.  Time for some rapid-fire music spam.  I know how utee hates it when I don't post a bunch :)

I saw a video someone uploaded of this song from a show a couple of days ago.  I'd heard their new synth guy could sing in the rafters and they were dusting off some of songs from this album which they've mostly avoided since the original vocalist's brief run with the band ended.  I have to say, the guy really did nail it.  But, it's the original that's on my mind as a result:

And because I know how much Fearless enjoys my worthless trivia:  The young guy that does synths and sings a little bit for them now comes from the band of the guitarist's son, Trevor Lukather.  Steve Lukather mentioned to his kid that they were looking for a new synth guy, preferably one who could sing some, and his son told him he had just the guy.  So, it pays to have kids who know your business.....it can help you out in your old age.

A few days back utee mentioned how much he loved the guitar solo on Skid Row's I Remember You, and it got me thinking this morning about my favorite guitar solos.  These don't necessarily represent what I think is the most skillful, best tone, most melodic, or any other metric other than "When the solo hits, I just love it."  Starting with Richie Sambora:

Then we've got Neal Schon:

And then there's Mr. Shoot-holes-in-road-signs-with-a-shotgun-from-the-tour-bus, Zakk Wylde:

And then finally (for now), there's this one from Steve Lukather.  Bit of a split solo here; there's the one sort of in the middle where it usually goes, and then there's the outro as the song fades to the ending.  I like them both, but it's the one at the end that grabs me the most.

Might think of some more later.  This is what sprang to mind for now.

I could make two or three albums'  worth of nothing but my favorite guitar solos from Neal Schon.  Truly the master of the lyric guitar solo.

And it's amazing that he does everything he does almost exclusively with three fingers.  I've watched him a lot over the years, and he keeps his pinky finger curled up behind the guitar neck, very, very rarely using it.  Terrible technique, guitar teachers would say, since it creates stress in the hand and the pinky is not ready to contribute.

Well, Neal Schon doesn't need his pinky to contribute.  He can outplay most guys with one finger tied behind his back.

Wonder if he originally played slide, learned to solo with the slide still on, then just never got away from that technique?
I play with the slide on my ring finger, and am not about to change.

I usually have to shrug a folks who have bold "you're not doing it right" statements about guitar and setups. While these usually revolve around ignorance behind using a capo, anything from string gauge, tuning, pickup wiring and config, to tone woods, branding, fret radius, etc. also gets commented on like there are laws.

It's (usually) wood and strings. It makes a noise. While certain combinations historically make the noise more pleasant, and tendonitis is a thing, no one has the authority to deny the artistry of one noise over another.
