Stole this from another board, Howlin' Jackson - traditional blues - rock with a modern twist. Looked him up tonight - totally AI right down to the cover graphics. Jeff Beck is rolling over in his grave.

awesome, the Woodford Reserve was on the rocks and paired especially nicely with a stogie
technically wasn't half the bottle cause I used a few tablespoons for a recipe

I'd been around for a few years.  I grew up listening to all of that Southern California Country-Rock.  Poco, Eagles, Flyiing Burrito Brothers, etc.

More trivia no one asked for:

This is the album that effectively spawned Toto.  The entire album is Jeff Porcaro on drums, David Hungate on bass, and David Paich on keys (and primary songwriter, along with Skaggs himself).  They were all becoming well known studio players and labels were beginning to notice they worked extremely well together, and that Paich was writing hit after hit for other artists.  I can't remember who played guitar on this album, but for the tour Skaggs hired a teenage Steve Lukather on Porcaro's recommendation, and the four of them went on the road for the Silk Degrees tour.   After seeing them play together behind Boz Skaggs, Columbia liked their potential enough to offer them a record deal.  They added a lead singer and another Porcaro brother on synths, and wah-lah, Toto.

It gives some basis to the "corporate rock" criticism that critics leveled at them.....they were, in fact, session players who got lumped into a band by record execs.  But the criticism doesn't hold up on closer inspection, I think, because before they were in-demand session players, they were high-school buddies who just all happened to be very talented and wound up being successful at the same job.  They had a band in high school, and their goal was always to form a successful band and not just be background guys on other people's albums.  So it's not like they were inorganicly put together by suits.....more like they organically moved up the ranks together and got noticed by suits.

Even if they were entirely a corporate creation, who cares?  I only really care about the final product and not the method by which it came about.  They were good, and deserved all the success they received.

My real problems with the effects of "corporatized rock" which began in the 70s and lasted into the 90s, were the cases where studio execs pushed bands to load albums with fluff and filler, and save more of the "good stuff" to be sprinkled across the next several albums.

As much as I love the "album rock" era, this type of corporate greed was partially responsible for the end of it, and the resulting shift toward digital downloads of singles, and ultimately singles streaming.

Above commentary probably more appropriate for the other "what about music is on your mind" thread but, well, here we are.

I mean, Muscle Shoals Recording (The Swampers), Detroit Funk Brothers, The Wrecking Crew. Session musicians providing the talent that defined the sounds of top acts and albums is simply ingrained in recorded music. The idea that an artist would walk in with some friends and leave with a record just didn't happen. Session musicians were (are) the guts behind the sound.

There's a self aggrandizing joke that a band is a drummer, bassist, and some invited guests. The implication is that there's a foundational groove that underpins the feeling, and then there's some color over the top that everyone hums.

If Toto made their "invited guests" part of the team, we'd call that a "band". I guess the controversial part here is that the suits in A&R finally noticed talent.
