so, you didn't get to see Diamond Dave???

First time for me was probably Saturday, June 23, 1984 in the old Omaha Civic Auditorium

not sure, it was late 70s or early 80s

we were down in front - Eddie played an acoustical set sitting barefoot on the edge of the stage while the band took a break

Nope, sadly I didn't ever get to see him perform with Van Halen.  I was just too young, I was in 6th grade when 1984 came out and my folks weren't letting me go to rock concerts yet.

I did see his solo tour for the Skyscraper album, which was pretty great with Steve Vai on guitar.  It was also by far the loudest concert I've ever been to, my ears were ringing for days it seemed.

I saw that tour at Reunion Arena in Dallas. Poison opened up (and said Ahhhhhh!).
Vai opened Dave's set with "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love".

Didn't know the greatness I was witnessing then.

Of course my absolute favorite single Van Halen song, is not on that album, it's on 1984.

My phone's Spotify app still randomly opens up to VH 5150 every couple of months, usually to Love Walks In, regardless of the fact it usually opens up to the last thing I was listening to, and that's never VH when it happens.

Said it once before, but I'll reiterate it here:  I am okay with this strange quirk.

I'm no one's keyboard player. Obviously I can read music, and I know where those notes go on the piano. If I need to play a piece, I gotta translate the music note for note and memorize it into my fingers. Therefore, there's a few pieces I can play.

Love Walks In is one. Home Sweet Home is another.

I'm not a keyboard player at all, but even I can play Home Sweet Home.  Spent many hours on my folks' piano practicing playing that piece.

Also, Axel F.

In my youth, Hastings and Musicland sold piano sheet music in the back. I did the old "decode and memorize" trick with Billy Joel's "Piano Man" and Elton John's "Candle in the Wind".

Both have been lost to time now.

Frankly, when I started playing guitar, something called the "Online Guitar Archive" (OLGA) was accessible. It contained user transcribed TABlature files for just about every song out there. I'd locate one that I thought I could accomplish, figure out how to play, reset, play, reset, etc the fingers.
Of course, western music is really repetitive, so over time, the fingers learned to make the chords without thinking. Similarly, the single note runs come in a few flavors and only vary by where you start on the neck.

My brain learned to control the individual fingers on the left hand 15 years earlier when I picked up the cello, so I had a head start on that part.

I knew/know a few 80's rock/metal drummers who learned to play Journey's "Faithfully" on the piano.  It was that same itch that a lot of musicians get, to just learn one thing on another instrument.....to say you did it, to see how it feels, to see if you can do it, try to identify with your bandmates more.....whatever the motivation may be.

They all picked that song.  Interesting, I thought.
