But that fear was very much a pillar of  being a youth in the 80s, the basis of the prime/core GenX psyche. The Cold War was omnipresent and all consuming in a lot of ways.

I'm certain that's a lot of the reason why the 80s became the materialistc, party-all-the-time, self-involved, live-in-the-moment kind of era that it was.  We were all terrified that our next party might be our last one.

To bring it back to this thread topic, that mentality was never more evident than in the music of the time.  And this song in particular captures it quite well.

We're all excited
But we don't know why
Maybe it's 'cause
We're all gonna die

And when we do (when we do)
What's it all for (what's it all for)
You better live now
Before the grim reaper come knocking on your door

Tell me, are we gonna let the elevator bring us down?
Oh, no let's go

Let's go crazy
Let's get nuts

Well now you've kicked up a fresh batch of my 80's nostalgia.

Here's a single from Roxette's first album, from before they scored big in the States with their second album.

I did not realize Marie Fredriksson died of brain cancer in 2019.

Yeah Roxette definitely wasn't on my radar until Dangerous/The Look/Must Have Been Love came out.

I'm an embarrassingly huge fan of Roxette. Per Gessle tries to keep the vibe alive with a group called "PG Roxette", but obviously it isn't the same. Marie was one of a kind.

One of my life goals is to form a Roxette tribute band. Keep hope alive!

According to the Wikipedia Overlord, Roxette also continues with a singer named Lena Philipsson, in addition to Per's other band PG Roxette.

Cuban_Missile_Crisis
The crisis lasted from 16 to 28 October 1962. The confrontation is widely considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into full-scale nuclear war.

I'd say my embarrassingly huge fandom is probably Level 42.  Man I love that group.  Saw them live in Austin a couple years back and it was a really great show.

Why even be embarrassed about those?

Those are solid groups with a lot of great material.  I say own it proudly.

Fun fact:  One of the former Level 42 drummers was said to be who Jeff Porcaro thought should replace him in Toto if something ever happened to him.  Interesting to me since they don't play a lot alike, but when you get Jeff's stamp of approval, you should give yourself a trophy and engrave the sentiment on your headstone when you go.  I'm not clear when he said that so I don't know if he was referring to Phil Gould or Gary Husband, and obviously that's not what Toto did, but I do think either one would've fit with Toto's style at the time very well.

Whenever I need to leave it all behind
Or feel the need to get away
I find a quiet place, far from the human race
Out in the country

Before the breathin' air is gone
Before the sun is just a bright spot in the nighttime
Out where the rivers like to run
I stand alone and take back somethin' worth rememberin'
“I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year." - Ebenezer Scrouge
