They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.

It's possible and even likely I've missed some great shows because of that, but I can live with it.  I see tons of amazing acts at the small venues mentioned above, and several others.

I saw some good acts at Stubbs BBQ when I lived in Austin (Stubbs???  It's been so long I don't really remember now, but it's something close to that, I think).  Inside was basically small-club sized, and some acts were outside with more people, but it's not like, say, The Woodlands.  Still small-ish for a big-name concert.  What was crazy to me is how many big names that BBQ joint got booked.

Yup, Stubbs BBQ.  The food isn't great, but the beer is cold and the music is good.  For those who like BBQ sauce, their sauce is actually pretty good.  You can buy it bottled at HEB.

And yeah, they have the inside room which is like a small club.  And then the outside amphitheater that's much larger, probably several thousand.  They get some really great acts, but it's also large enough that it starts triggering my people-hate and anti-large-venue reaction.

Oh, that's bigger outside than I remember.  I was thinking you might pack in several hundred to a thousand out there.  I think I only saw a few shows outside and the people stood around clumped in separate groups.  It wasn't packed, but then, it was freezing cold out there each time I did an outside show.  Maybe it skewed my memory of how many people it could've held if full.

Yeah when a show is packed it's probably like 2-3K.  The really big names are generally really packed.  I've seen less known artists out there where it's maybe a few hundred and there's plenty of room to spread out.

One of the best shows I ever saw was Mutemath playing Stubbs.  It was inside, and though it was packed, it couldn't have been that many people.  I'd heard of them from a friend but hadn't gotten their debut album yet, but I knew I was in for a treat when the drummer came out and began duct-taping his headphones to his head.  It was soon apparent why....the guy flailed around so much while playing that they would've flown off in the first three seconds otherwise.

Holy cow, those guys could play.  I got the album, and I like it, but it's one of those things where if you ever saw them live, the albums can only disappoint you.

Not altogether different than watching them live.  They made messes and jumped around like monkeys, all while somehow managing to play really well.  At one point I remember the singer hand-standing completely vertically on the Rhodes you see in the video, balancing with one hand and playing with the other.  In my mid-40's I'd have to say that's not my cup of tea (maybe more so when I was young and had tons of energy), but it was impressive as hell.  They usually tore up a lot of their set by the end of it and it made the numbers-nerd in me wonder how much money they wasted doing that.  Not like they were a really big thing and super rich.
