Toto drummer and session-legend Jeff Porcaro was asked "What do you think about Punk?"

He said:

"I don't."

But hey, I'll name a song that I really really hate, and see if you agree?  Maybe we can find some common ground?

I don't know if I think it's the worst song ever, but it's certainly a song I consider to be truly terrible.  Especially considering that earlier versions of this band were actually pretty good:

This is one of those songs that I hate that I like it.  I mean.....I don't like it, not in any normal sense I can define, anyway.  But it gets stuck in my head and that means its catchy and that something in my subconscious says "Ok, I can get on board with that."

My subconscious gets me into all kinds of trouble over the years.

As for Toby vs. Sinatra.....

Subjectively, you do you, I guess.

Objectively, we'll just wait until a couple of generations have passed and see if anybody is still reminiscing about Toby and constantly using his songs in films, commercials, etc.  I have my suspicions about the answer, but I'll wait til I'm old.

To be fair, I set up an unfair comparison while I was jacking around with lh320.

He wasn't really comparing Toby to Sinatra, just Toby to one Sinatra song, which I'll readily admit isn't Sinatra's best.  But I also don't think it's terrible, I actually like it.  And there have been a lot of other versions of that song that I've liked over the years.

I don't understand lh320's visceral reaction to a song that I find to be pretty innocuous, but as always, music is subjective.

I used to sing it at the top of my lungs when it came out in junior high.  It took me a few years to realize how much I hate it.  But now, I can't un-hate it.

As syrupy as it was, I actually like "Sara" from the same album.

One of the ultimate drunken frat boy songs.  In the best and worst ways.

To be fair, Buddy Rich had a pretty low opinion of anything that wasn't Jazz - or specifically Buddy Rich.
Asking Porcaro to play punk would be like asking Rembrandt to paint your living room with a roller.

Much like punk encouraged loose, loud, aggressive playing, but frequently just ended up with bad musicianship, modern country music seems to require the "'Murica, luv it uhr leave it! Don't chew queers touch mah flag!" frat bro vibe. Just bash it together over some power chords to show you're angry, with a fiddle at the bridge to prove its kuntrah, and you're good.

I'm sure there's still a couple of decent offerings in the genre, but I'm not overly motivated to dig for them.

Yeah I've been calling out bro country for years.  Or decades.  Not sure when it really started.  But it's not good.

I don't mind the vibe so much as the repetitiveness.  Country only ever had so many chord progressions, and if the "modernized" country that was popular in the 90's expanded the genre's chord-progression offerings, bro-country is the pendulum that swung back the other way, way too hard.

And then there's the sounds themselves.  They've got it down to a fine art, and to be fair, the sounds they engineer are fantastic in their own right.  It's just that it's a narrow ditch they dug and then chose to get stuck in.

I don't "mind" bro-country as much as I wore out long ago on its repetition.  I've seen some hilarious videos of people splicing together a bunch of different bro-country songs and you almost wouldn't know the difference, except for the voice changes.

I can listen to a bro-country song and not mind it in the least.  Listening to a block of bro-country on the radio, commerical-to-commercial, is torture.

Good morning folks.  I like Toby cause he wrote his own songs and he didnt take himself too seriously

Thats also why I like willie.  Now before utee goes nuts let me say that Willie has more talent in his little finger then Toby ever had.  I know that,  The depth and imagination in Willie's songs is truely amazing.

Toby represented to me what America was all about and he played the role well.
They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.
