Is it too early to ask about OUs next coach ?
Not too early for me. This coaching staff is demonstrating John Blake-level incompetence.
I think that the Peter Principle has kicked in for Brent Venables. Great defensive coordinator, mediocre (at best) head coach.

The Sooners lost 6 fumbles. The last one was by Billy Simms after he had carried 17 yards to the Husker 3. There was 3:27 left in the game.

The Huskers ground out a 1st down, but faced 3rd and 8 at the 17. On the play, OU CB Basil Banks was flagged for a personal foul and the Huskers were able to run out the clock.

17-14 Huskers.

That team might have been Switzer's most talented. But it wasn't the most disciplined. Lots of penalties and turnovers.

Sooners and Huskers ended tied for the Big 8 championship, but by virtue of the head-to-head victory, the #6 Huskers (9-2) were selected to represent the conference in the Orange Bowl.

Much to Dr. Tom's chagrin, #4 OU (10-1) was selected as the visiting team, and the Sooners won the rematch 31-24. Both programs were pretty frustrated with that season.

Huskers had a little magic in the '71 game too. Not that they weren't the better team, though, because I think they were.
But Johnny Rodgers' punt return for TD (with clips not flagged) and the Huskers' game-winning, time-consuming drive killed the prospects of an upset.

That's pretty good, Gigem.

But I don't remember the national guys saying that OU was going to suck last year. More like cautious comments, based on the conference schedule. However, we did suck!

I'm not hugely optimistic about this season. We've still got a difficult conference schedule and we are also playing Michigan. We should be better than last year, as I don't think we're going to have a shit-show for an offense. But Brent Venables, so far, has produced teams that are less than the sum of their parts. Over the last three years, we have found about every way to lose.

While it's true that ou sucks... I always, always, ALWAYS expect them to be way better than I think they should be, and to deliver tremendous amounts of pain and agony, especially directly unto me.

That crazy halftime-turnaround game mentioned on the other thread, just one of the many many examples.

This year, however... I think they're actually going to struggle.  I'm not sold on coaching at all, and the talent looks to be trending toward the lowest it's been in, well, a long time.

The QB might be good, but I don't think there's enough talent and especially depth around him, for it to make much of a difference.

7-5ish seems about right to me.

Now that I've said that, all the rest of you should probably bet heavy on them obliterating Texas, winning the SEC, and playing for the NC.

I feel like, last season, the talking heads did a half-arsed analysis with the Sooners, and just sort of figured that there's no way they'd have 2 down years in a row. The truth is, Riley gutted that team good when he left, and they haven't rebuilt it yet.
What I'm seeing is that the OL had only a few serviceable parts when BV took over. They haven't replaced those guys with anyone better.
I don't see any real reason to believe that Bedenbaugh can just miracle up an OL. He's done OK with OK talent, but hasn't ever actually turned crummy into good.
If he does that, Mateer will hurt a lot of teams. If it's the same product as last 2 seasons, it doesn't matter (mateer?) who the QB is.

I'm not sold on the coaching either. Brent Venables has yet to demonstrate that he can be a successful head coach. Defensive coordinator extraordinaire, but that's not what OU hired him to be. And there are a couple of position coaches who probably should have already been shown the door.

Here's my absolutely non-insider assessment.

Last year was terrible. We had our worst offense since the John Blake era. But we had a greatly improved defense. We woulda/coulda/shoulda finished about 8-5. We blew at least 3 late-game leads, including the one to Navy in the bowl game. But we beat Bama, when we probably shouldn't have. So, 2 games better than 6-7 is 8-5.

This year, we should have a defense on par with last year's, and we should have a better offense. The o-line should be better, the WRs should be better (or at least healthier), and the QB should be better. But we play Michigan, which I see as at best a toss-up, even though the game is in Norman. So, my guess is 8-4 plus a win in the bowl game for 9-4. If the regular season record is 7-5, Venables might be coaching for his job in the bowl game.
