Kingsbury's really got himself a QB there.  Like a statue in the pocket.  Hangs his receivers out to dry.  Misses open guys.  A real gamer.

Not the only thing wrong with Tech, though.  A better defense would help.

He’s had 5 years and is still posting losing records.  He’s cementing TT’s return to the same mediocre team they were pre-Leach.

What TT needs is a new HC.

I wonder how attractive Tech is to up-and-coming coaches.  The PTB in Lubbock ran off the best coach they've had in the last 70-plus years.

How 'bout that Army 4th-quarter comeback?  That was inspirational!  I liked it that Mack Brown was making the case on TV for the 2-point conversion, and that Army went for two, and that the Black Knights converted it.

The defensive score with time expired was just icing on the cake.

Mack is a decent TV guy

probably should still be coaching in Austin

Yeah.  He's pretty good on TV.

He tooted his own horn there discussing how he overruled his assistants and ordered a deliberate kick-off out of bounds against Michigan in the Rose Bowl, but he's good more often than he is not.  I thought he made the case for Army to go for two about as concisely and as clearly as it could be made.

I wonder how many Horn fans wish he were still coaching in Austin.

Speaking of the Rose Bowl, how awesome was it for Texas to play in, then win in classic, cliff-hanger fashion, two straight Rose Bowls, the 2nd one for the national championship?  Not many teams have had that experience.

In one sense, it wasn't all that long ago.  In another, it seems like it was ages ago.

Congrats on that Army win, CW.  I was on the treadmill and flipped to that game in time to see the last play, which was pretty entertaining.  Thought of you and a few other Army guys I've gotten to know.

Well, I do hope we get to have that beer one day as I'd really like to hear a few of your tales of your times at West Point.  Must have been pretty interesting there.

We do have to have that beer, Fred.

But I don't have much exciting to tell about West Point.  I worked in the Dean's office for a year with the impressive-sounding title of Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, but I was just a place-holder there in a job that was about to be civilianized.  I did work a deal with the Army War College to get more slots for USMA-faculty lieutenant colonels to attend there.  Then for two years I was the XO of the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering with half of a teaching load.

West Point was a good place, with the usual mix of great leaders, self-serving bureaucrats, and mediocrities promoted above their talents that you find in most military institutions.  I think that the establishment there was more concerned about producing future national leaders than producing outstanding Army officers.  Maybe that's a good thing--I don't know.  It seemed misguided to me at the time.

I didn't make any Army-Navy games.  Now I wish I had, but at the time they seemed like old-grad-reunion shindigs, and I was not a grad, old or otherwise.

On the Army win the other day . . . that has been the best game of bowl season for me.  Army had to play as close to a perfect game as possible, because SDSU had more talent, especially in the speed department.  Army's offense could never overcome a big penalty.  A holding penalty was a drive-killer.  The game-winning drive with the 2-point conversion was a masterpiece of guts, poise, and precise execution.

OU plays at Army on 26 September 2020.  I plan to make that trip.  West Point is beautiful at that time of year.  I imagine that the game will be in New York City, though.  Michie Stadium's capacity of 38,000 fannies won't be enough, I expect.

Here are some pictures of beautiful Michie Stadium.

This is an aerial photo from the Hudson River side, looking back to the west.  The pond in front of the stadium is Lusk Reservoir.  The stadium sits 2-3 hundred feet above the Hudson River.  I got my introduction to tailgating in that parking lot to the right rear of the stadium.

This is looking north up the Hudson River.  The Plain, where the parades are held, is northeast of the stadium, out of the picture.  The medium-sized city of Newburgh--where George Washington encamped the Continental Army between the victory at Yorktown in October 1781 and the signing of the Treaty of Paris almost 2 years later--would be on the left, visually blocked here by Storm King Mountain.  Further upriver, on the right, is the FDR Library and Museum at Hyde Park.  Well worth a trip if you are ever in the area with half a day to spare.

This is looking down the river toward New York City.

That's Michie Stadium and the vicinity of West Point during football season.  It's a beautiful place.

Two Big 12 teams play tomorrow.  West Virginia vs. Utah in the Heart of Dallas Bowl at 12:30 CST, and K-Sate vs. UCLA in the Cactus Bowl at 8:00.  Sandwiched in between is Duke vs. Northern Illinois in the Quick Lane (?) Bowl, at 4:15.

We'll be driving to Santa Fe to visit my mother-in-law, so I'll have to follow them on Sirius XM radio.

WVU should beat Utah, I think.

As for the K-State-UCLA game, I think it depends a lot on whether UCLA shows up ready to play.  Bruin QB Josh Rosen is sitting it out, having more important things to do than play his final game with his teammates.  Will the UCLA players be demoralized, or will they show up angry and ready to take out their frustrations on whomever happens to be in the way?

Bill Snyder doesn't have a great bowl record overall. And only 2-6 with a win last season over the Aggies in his second run with KSU.

The interesting thing about this bowl vs UCLA is it could be Wild Bill's last game as coach.

I was leaning towards taking the purple cats, but think I'll stay away from putting money on this bowl

Not only might it be Wild Bill's last stand, it probably should be.  The suspicion is that he won't announce he's leaving while there are any good coaching candidates available, so when he does KSU will be forced to accept his son as the new HFC.

Wish there were some K-Staters around to give us the poop.

West Virginia didn't show much without Will Grier.  Big 12 is 0-2.
I went to bed at halftime of the Cactus Bowl.  I was thinking the Big 12 was about to be 0-3.  This morning I woke up to fine the Cats scored 21 point and shut out UCLA in the 2nd half.  Congratulations to the Cats!
Big 12 is 1-2 with 5 more bowls to go.
