Abe was born in Kentucky, where bourbon is famous.

I don't think Abe was much of a drinker, bourbon or beer or otherwise.

Louis Englert-man-myth-legend!
He founded the Englert City Brewing Company at 309 E Market Street back in 1853 (he bought the entire property for $75.00) in his modest house (only 24' by 36'), and kept adding on until it took up a majority of that part of the block!
He shut down his brewery for 2 years to fight in the Civil War as part of the 37th Iowa Regiment! They were known as the "Grey Beards" because every man was over the age of 30 (and the oldest was 81 years old!) Originally tasked with Prisoner of War guard duty, they were pressed into service in the siege of Vicksburg. General Ulysses S. Grant said of the Iowan's that he fought with "I could defeat any country in the world with an Army of Iowan's!"
Upon the Union victory, he returned to Iowa City to get the brewery going again, and eventually sold it to his son JJ in 1875.
JJ plays a critical role as part of the Iowa City Beer Mafia in our Movie that will begin filming in Iowa City this summer-Death of a Brewer! Look for more details coming soon!
