Curious about how folks here feel about it, heck, it always comes up this time of year anyway ...

Being an old fart, I want to go back to the old bowl system.

But knowing that isn't going to happen, I want a 6 team system with the 5 power conference champs guaranteed to be in it.

I voted eight team, First round at home. Though I'd prefer first two rounds be at home and the national championship in the Rose Bowl.

I like the old system with voting after the bowls, but I liked the BCS where the top 2 teams were paired more often.

I'd be happy with either

I voted BCS - 2 team playoff

i simply disregarded the "go back" options, as those aren't realistic. but if i were completely honest, i'd love a chance for bama to go back to the rose bowl again, so we'd have to go way the hell back for me.

for this topic, i chose 8 team, with home field rd 1.

i'd like the p5 to have championship auto-birth, with come caveats. if your champion isn't top 12, they're not in. sorry, i really don't want a 6-8 win teams in, regardless of "merit" (of which, imo, they have little to none at that point).

but, except for very unusual years, you'd have p5 champs auto bids, give 1 to any g5 in top 10, and then last 2-3 (depending on the caveats) are up for grabs. sorry notre dame, no special exemption. either join a conference, or be so good they have to pick you.

rd 1 is home field for top 4. played mid-late december (15-20th-ish dates) to kick off bowl season.
rd 2 is a rotation of top bowls (rose, sugar, cotton, fiesta, orange, maybe peach)
champ game is either rotation of major bowls not in rd 2 (similar to now) or city/bowl bidding process (similar to superbowl). i think i like the bidding, gives northern cities a chance to hold the game.

I like the 8 teams with 1st round HFA. 5 auto-bids, top G5 team, and 2 at-large.

This gives the committee two very important tasks, and for those of us that love arguing about minutiae, two tasks that we can endlessly debate if we get it right:

  • They choose the two at-large teams.
  • They seed the field. I would ask that conference championships don't carry weight in the seeding, it should be based on "best team" measurement as defined by the committee.

What's important about this is that there will be cases where a P5 non-champion at-large team will be seeded in the top 4 and get HFA. There will likely be cases where a P5 champion is seeded 8th even behind G5.

I think it's a good balance between rewarding a team for a P5 conference championship and not rewarding them too much, because you're not even guaranteed that the 4 best champs will get HFA. It also will help blunt the concern for those who want the "best teams" and don't want the non-deserving conference champions, because the "best teams" may be non-champs who still get HFA over a conference champ.

7.  None of the Above

Ideally, I'd go back to the old bowl system WITH a plus 1 option, when there are 2 P5 teams remaining, undefeated (2004, 1994, etc).
The Plus 1 would sometimes be played, but often not.

Two Leagues, no divisions. No wild card.

Best of 7 WS.  Wait, wrong sport.
