That VAR reversed a game winning goal Iran scored against Egypt.  Dude's big toe was shown to be "offsides."

The sport is just absolutely flawed with that rule, imo.  Combine that with all the fakery, it's just Un-'Merican.

But I will watch some more, I guess.

The $100 I spent to watch the Royals hasn't panned out very well.  Promising season turned sour with the injury bug and the 3/4 hitters around the Mendoza line (one of which caught an injury anyway.)
Yeah, this is one of the problems I have with VAR reviews. How accurate is that? In the Premier League there is a 5 cm leeway given, but not in the World Cup. I think the leeway makes sense. And speaking as a referee of games that don't and never will have VAR, it's silly to ask referees to see something that is arguably within a computer's margin of error.

That said, assuming that you believe the system they use, there is no question it was an offside offense.

I feel for the Dutch goalie. Morocco won on penalties and he blocked one but accidentally knocked it in anyway. Rough.

I haven't spent a whole lot of time watching WC, but I ended up catching both of last night's games.

It seems a bit weird... You have four teams who have spent years even qualifying for WC play. They've survived 3 games of group play to make the knockout round. They spend 90 minutes battling to a tie in normal time, and then another 30 minutes continuing to fight to remain still in a draw.

And then they advance or go home based on... Penalty kicks? Which are nearly as arbitrary as whether the goalie guesses correctly which way to dive?

I mean, it was still exciting b/c you knew how much was on the line, but it also seems a bit like you're taking the result of years of effort and reducing it to something that's a series of coin flips, not really representative of the true strength of either team...

Since I'm not a soccer fan... Do soccer fans find it disappointing when matches end this way? Or is this something that you all find completely normal and appropriate as a way to end these knockout round games?

Yes and no. It is basically a series of coin flips and has little to do with the game. That is true. But I'm not sure there is anything more dramatic in sports. So at least it is entertaining. Plus it gives you some certainty on when a game will actually end. A man needs his sleep.

I'm not sure how else you'd do it.  If they went straight to PKs after regular time, then I suppose that would be weird.

But they actually add another 30 mins of "normal" game-play.

If it's not decided by then, then what else are you supposed to do?  Adding even more "normal" game-play could start to get dangerous from a fatigue-induced-injury perspective.

You've played to a tie after 120 minuts of gametime, and it's becoming unsafe to continue.  So a coinflip is as good a way as any to decide the outcome.  And PKs are a very exciting form of coinflip.

Just my opinion anyway.

Yeah, the problem is that after playing 2 hours, you need an ending and perhaps this is the best of all the other sub-optimal ways to do it...

Appreciate the feedback. Seems like it's something that even soccer fans may not "love", but accept.

Let me introduce you to college football, where we assume possession in OT -- in scoring range.

Never been a big soccer guy, but do really enjoy the WC, mostly because my sons got me into it some years back, and I really enjoy sharing things, and experiences with them -- -things that excite them.

However, I hate the offside rule, don't fully comprehend it, and if anything is unAmerican in soccer -- the offside rules are it!

He also had a hand on the tying goal at the end of regulation, but couldn't knock it away.

I'm okay with the idea of offsides, but I think it should be more like the way they do it in hockey.  Once the game play is "in the zone" then there shouldn't be any offsides, until the ball is cleared out of the zone.  Maybe use the 18-yard box for that.

I really can't stand watching the ball and the entire game go on right along the endline, and then the defenders step up a few steps and suddenly the offense is somehow offsides, when the entire play was happening within a yard or two of the endline prior to that.
