Without conference tie-ins...
« on: April 17, 2022, 01:31:25 PM »
What would the 1 v 2 matchups have been in a world without bowl tie-ins?  Who would you pick to win?
Starting pre-BCS and going backwards......games in bold guarantee a different NC than reality
.
1997:  Michigan vs Nebraska
1996:  Florida State vs Arizona State
1994:  Penn State vs Nebraska
1991:  Washington vs Miami
1990:  Colorado vs Georgia Tech
1989:  Colorado vs Miami
1988:  Notre Dame vs Miami (rematch)
1985:  Miami vs Penn State
1984:  BYU vs Oklahoma
1983:  Nebraska vs Texas
1981:  Clemson vs Georgia (rematch)
1980:  Georgia vs Florida State
1979:  Ohio State vs Alabama
1977:  Texas vs Oklahoma (rematch)
1976:  Pitt vs Michigan
1975:  Ohio State vs Texas A&M
1974:  Oklahoma vs USC
1973:  Oklahoma vs Alabama
1972:  USC vs Oklahoma

What kept the Fiesta from trying to get Miami-Penn St in 1985 (like they did just one year later) and Miami-ND in 1988?

I'd guess lack of $$$ in 85, but I don't know.  As for 88, I doubt ND wanted a rematch.

Penn state was offered and accepted Orange Bowl bid relatively early iirc.   These bowl bids were often offered weeks before season ended.

Some thoughts:
In 96, I don't think ASU would have scored a point.
In 84, as many of you probably agree, I think OU would run roughshod over BYU.
.
That 83 Texas defense was great, I don't think Nebraska wins easily.  The Horns faced tons of option teams and held half of them without a TD.  They faced  four top-10 teams (including UGA in the bowl) and allowed 7, 16, 12, and 10 points in those games.
.
I go back-and-forth on 94.  If Nebraska could run on that Miami defense, they'd bludgeon PSU's right?  Well....I mean, it's not like the Huskers scored 40....they got 24.  Now I do think they'd score 40 on Penn State, but how many would Penn State score?  People forget how shitty that Miami passing game was that the Huskers held in check.  Collins, Carter, Engram, and Brady would have been light-years better and tougher to contain.  It would have been a truly great (and high-scoring, imo) game.

Not getting to see Nebraska-Penn St in 94 was really what got me wanting changes to occur in the postseason. That would have been a barn burner.

Did any of you play back when they wore those shoes with a thousand little nubs on the bottom on that carpet-on-concrete turf from back in the day?  What was that like?

I had a pair.   Great footing, the problem was falling on that turf.   The rug burns and strawberries on your legs and behind were no good.

I played on the turf but didn’t have the shoes.  I literally played in a pair of Magic Converse basketball high tops. I played on that kind of turf two weeks in a row my senior year and I can tell you after two weeks on it I was ready to get back on grass.  Carpet burns, scrapes, and just the unforgiving hard surface every time you fell on it.  I was excited to play on it because it felt “big time” because I saw the pro and college teams playing on it.  But after experiencing it I hated it.

I’ve been on the new stuff they play on now and it’s night and day.

I played one baseball game in Columbus, Ohio on art turf.  We wore our steel spikes, which I found amazing, nothing tore up the turf.

That 97 UM offense was brutal.  I'm not saying it was bad, but it turned out to be very limiting of itself.  I believe it had only 1 WR among its top 6 pass-catchers.....maybe 2.  That's very rare.
So many passes to RBs and FBs and the TE Tumane (I believe).  That's killing your yards-per-attempt average.  They took the "we have a great D, so our O's job is to not screw up" and ratcheted it up to 11.
