He wasn’t always that. Late in his career he was a decent hammer, but lost a bit of luster.

That might be more of an insider perspective. Granted, I don’t have the advanced stats on efficiency for Ball that last year. Gordon was good not unreal as a junior, but was hilariously explosive.
The OL was kinda messy that season, starting with Markuson (fired after game 3) and his finesse crap, and then having to go back to the Bostad way, with Bart Miller.

Funny he’s far and away the best in the pros.
I wouldn't even say White's the best running back in the pros. Certainly not the best runner. He's a versatile player, but he's never been a 3-down back at the NFL level.

I'd venture to say that Gordon is the best in the pros, even though fantasy football managers call him a "plodder". He's just been in a crappy offensive system behind a mediocre o-line. But as the Chargers started to incorporate their backs more in the pass game (using Ekeler at first but then adding in Gordon) he showed he's no slouch there.

agreed

Brady liked to toss short passes to White, but I never thought of him as an every down NFL back

On a better team, Gordon would be amazing.
