1997
  • November 8 featured two matchups of Top 5 teams, as #4 Michigan beat #2 Penn State and #3 Florida State beat #5 North Carolina, however, the story of the day was Nebraska needing a kicked ball to avoid an upset loss to Missouri
  • Fred Taylor ran for 162 yards and 4 touchdowns against the nation's top run defense to knock Florida State out of the national title discussion
  • Marshall won the MAC Championship in their first season in Division 1-A, thanks to Randy Moss and Chad Pennington
  • Charles Woodson became the only primarily defensive player to win the Heisman

'97 is certainly deserving, but I wonder how it would fare on a board where two (current) conference members didn't win a national title

I voted '93.   Of course my allegiances have a Big 8 origin and frankly the entire season was more interesting to me, despite being on campus for '97.

It helped living in WI where for the first time in my life college football was given more than 5 minutes of attention over the weekend.  Packers smother that state, still do, always will.
