really interested in this game, wonder if Leonhard can keep this energy and intensity up and complete the turnaround. They smoked Northwestern last week- and that team could've quit- and I thought they would bc it was sounding like the players were NOT on board at all with Chryst being fired. If Leonhard can win out they'll have no choice but to make him the permanent head coach.

That's the scenario I want to see.

And he'll never leave for something better.

More drama in the locker room this week with Logan Brown being dismissed from the team yesterday.

Another week, another opportunity to respond. Let's see how this one goes.

Looks like the starting OL will be

LT Jack Nelson
LG Tanner Bortolini
C Joe Tippman
RG Michael Furtney
RT Trey Wedig

Tyler Beach will come in as the Jumbo TE for that package.

RT Riley Mahlman will still likely be out. Pretty certain OT Nolan Rucci will rotate in from time to time.

No matter the outcome, it looks like Graham Mertz will play the entire game as the staff would like to redshirt the true freshman backup. They do have a true freshman walk-on they could use, I guess.

Is he already at 4 games?

No, he's played in only two so far, but I think they want to save him as much as possible in case Mertz goes down late in the season.

They don't want 2018, when Horni was concussed and Coan had to burn his shirt for the bowl game.

Wisconsin Badgers (1-2, 3-3) at Michigan State Spartans (0-3, 2-4)
4:00 - East Lansing, MI - FOX
Remembering the run where these schools were battling for control of the conference, and then how long they spent as reliable 8 win teams, how far both have fallen, this quickly, is surprising.  Granted it's only a 3 game sample size, but the fact that they rank #13 and #14 in scoring defense in the conference is a big part of the problem.  Both are already looking to the future, in different ways.  Michigan State invested heavily in a head coach, not based on what he had done, but on the talent he was bringing in.  Wisconsin quit on their 2022 roster, with hopes of salvaging something better for the future.  The jury is still out on both decisions.  The season appears lost for Michigan State, but as long as the recruiting class stays in place, the investment might still work out.  The first game of Jim Leonhard's head coaching career was also strong, but Northwestern is the lowest ranked Big Ten team I can find in the Massey composite.  They are #115.  #117 is a Western Michigan team that Michigan State blew out.  So take away the Power 5 status, and that Northwestern win is an bad as any FBS win.  They are ranked one spot below a 3-4 UConn team.  Both teams have underwhelmed on the offensive lines.  While Wisconsin's is perhaps more surprising, I think there is more room for them to fix the situation.  Kenneth Walker III made this offensive line, which was severely under talented last year, look a lot better, with better vision than I can recall seeing out of a college back.  That has flipped 180 degrees, and the main backs this year, Berger and Broussard, have well below acceptable.  That has made it how obvious the OL deficiencies are for Michigan State.  Wisconsin is too weak on the outside to beat more talented teams, but MSU couldn't beat Maryland or Minnesota in a phone booth.
WISCONSIN 26, MICHIGAN STATE 24

Amusing how that didn't end up mattering.

What was the story on why Mertz started over Coan in 2020?  A lingering injury?

Coan was injured. Then he was told that Mertz was the QB of the future. Then he transferred to Notre Dame and beat Wisconsin the next year.

It worked out great.

Badge! This is history of the revisionist short.

The thing played out in the only way it could. Coan wanted guarantees he'd start. He was not given them. And he shouldn't have been given them, first because earn your job and second becuase you'd trigger a transfer.

The issues with this is that if it goes the other way, we're still complaining all over. Mertz was entering Year 3. If the best QB recruit in school history isn't starting in Year 3 because a game manager who isn't supposed to be there is starting and then he (reasonably) transfers out, people would be slagging on Chryst until kingdom come.

Jack Coan was a very nice QB. But had he not gotten hurt, he would've spent 2020 hearing he should be benched. Sending the guy everyone wanted him benched for packing after an abbreviated season, it just wasn't the smart choice.

Yep, everyone wanted Mertz to start, but mostly everyone forgot that Coan got the team to the CCG and Rose Bowl in 2019.

Or maybe it was because he had the best tailback to ever play in Madison...
