Wisconsin Badgers (0-2, 2-3) at Northwestern Wildcats (1-1, 1-4)
3:30 - Evanston, IL - BTN
It's tough to say how Wisconsin comes out.  It's clear the locker room was not united behind the decision to fire their coach.  But this may have been the right time to do it, if that was going to happen anyway.  From a schematic point, doing it going into a bye week is probably ideal.  But from a roster management point, going two weeks without a game is likely not ideal.  Going on the road, spending the night together in a hotel, but going into a non hostile environment, may help them move beyond.  For this struggling defense, the Northwestern offense is exactly what they need.  The Badgers are dead last in ppg in conference games, and #13 in run defense and pass efficiency defense.  But Northwestern's offense is absolutely dreadful.  They essentially had a good quarter against a horrible Nebraska defense, and that's it.  But how has Northwestern won 4 of the last 8 against an always better Wisconsin team?  The Wildcats are +13 in turnover margin in those 8 games.  And ball security is not exactly the strength of this version of Bucky, with 3 turnovers each in their losses to Washington State and Illinois.  To make it 5 of 9, those patterns are going to have to repeat.  This Wildcat offense is so aggressively bad that it I'm not even sure that's enough.  Penn State turned the ball over 5 times last week, and Northwestern turned those 5 turnovers into exactly zero points.  Wisconsin is going to need to get some run game going to alleviate some of the pressure on Graham Mertz, who just is who he is at this point.  Penn State's improved run game last week forced it, running the ball 58 times, but for just 3.8 ypc, and just one run longer than ten yards (19).  This won't be fun to watch, but even against a struggling Wisconsin defense, I just don't see how Northwestern generates anything offensively.
WISCONSIN 31, NORTHWESTERN 19

Somebody has to get right this week in Evanston.

Northwestern opened with a nice looking win in Ireland over the Cornhuskers. That looked impressive at the time but that was before Nebraska cratered, fired their coach, and generally looked awful. Since then the Cats have lost four straight despite only playing one decent opponent.

Wisconsin's last four haven't been any better. They did win one but it was against one of the worst teams out there (NMST) and the other three were an embarrassing home loss to WSU and back-to-back blowouts by tOSU and IL.

As bad as these two teams have looked lately, the winner of this game will be no worse than a game out of the B1G-W lead.

The loser, however, is in all kinds of trouble.

With a loss the Cats would drop to 1-5/1-2 and on a five-game losing streak. That is heading into a streak of visiting the Terps and Hawkeyes, then hosting the Buckeyes. It is hard to see them avoid falling to 1-8/1-5.

With a loss the Badgers would drop to 2-4/0-3 and pretty much out of the B1G-W race.

tough call

I expect the Badgers to come out fired up

Nebraska did that after Frost was fired.  The problem was that is only lasted through the first quarter vs the Sooners

By ALL accounts the players are not happy. Lots of transfer talk too.

The Badgers will be on the receiving end of the Wisconsin effect this week, courtesy of Burt.

didn't have much talk about that in Lincoln
leading me to think perhaps the rumors about Frost are true.

The good news is that the captains have spoken to the effect that this is partly on them.

Players not executing leads to losing leads to firings.

They know this. Now, the bounce back, or the spiral.

Pick one.

Probably glad we have no TV yet.

Leonhard will try to turn this ship around- but Graham Mertz truly sucks. And has always truly sucked. I'll always be convinced Chryst putting all his QB eggs in the Graham Mertz basket is what wound up getting him fired. Wisconsin is reeling right now. Give me Northwestern by 4 points. I'm gonna say Northwestern 24-20.

so, there's got to be an option sitting behind Mertz

If you take away all of Wisconsin's TDs on offense, defense and special teams, Northwestern wins 7-0.

😂😂😂

have to say I did not see that performance from Wisconsin coming. Leonhard made an AWESOME first impression if he’s trying to make that job permanently his.

Graham Mertz doesn't suck after all.

And yes, Leonhard is doing his dream job right now. It's his to lose.
