It will be interesting to see who will start at left tackle with Mahlman still out.

Logan Brown has been, but he was taken out of the game after allowing a bullfighter sack of Mertz last week. His replacement was Trey Wedig, who graded out well. Could also see Tanner Bortolini filling in.

It can't be Brown against OSU. Mertz would get killed.

Wisconsin Badgers (2-1) at #3 Ohio State Buckeyes (3-0)
7:30 - Columbus, OH - ABC
It feels like Wisconsin has played this series a lot closer than the actual records recently.  But Ohio State has won 8 straight, including 3 Big Ten Championship Games, and 11 of 12 going back to 2004, which was Wisconsin's last win in the Shoe.  But perhaps it's because while Michigan State and Purdue have knocked Brutus off a couple times in there, they largely get blown out.  Wisconsin has a number of one score losses in there.  The questions about just how good the 2022 version of the Buckeyes offense really is have slowly subsided week by week.  Putting up 77 points last week, still playing with a only a shell of their two best offensive weapons, should totally bury that.  All Ohio State did was 100+ yard day, career games, out of three underclassmen, in running back Dallan Hayden, and receivers Emeka Egbuka and Jayden Ballard.  The defense continues to be stout against the run, however, the deep ball in the passing game, which was problematic against Notre Dame, reared it's head again.  The Rockets were able to score on a pair of 40+ passing plays.  Wisconsin got their downfield passing game going last week, with all 8 Badgers who caught a ball, having an 11+ yard reception, five of them 20+, and three 40+.  Mix in the balance run attack, where four different backs ran for over 5.7 ypc on 5+ carries, and maybe Bucky is finding a little bit of their explosion.  Also, New Mexico State might be the worst team in the FBS.  Granted, Washington State may not be fielding a typical Washington State defense.  The Cougars held (an admittedly bad) Colorado State to 7 points this week, and are up to #22 in defensive SP+.  Jim Leonard's defense does better than anyone against the Ryan Day offense, but I don't think this is the Buckeye defense that you could pound away on like last year.  You have to get the ball on the outside, and force their corners to play one on one down the field.  If Graham Mertz was ever going to show that, now would be the time.  I think this turns into far more of a defensive slugfest though, with the Buckeyes ultimately having too many weapons.

I'm not seeing that kind of margin here for OSU. Most of the recent games have been competitive.

Also, UW is built differently today than it was since the last time the teams met.

They are much faster and more talented on the outsides for both sides of the ball.

I think if UW can avoid the turnovers, they can stay in this thing. They still won't win, but I cannot see a blowout here.

kinda crazy that Logan Brown hasn't panned out. he was the #1 OT and a top 10 player overall in his class I want to say. think there might be something about highly touted Grand Rapids kids just not being all that good. Kevin Grady was a 5* RB- kinda sucked. Drake Harris was an early 5* WR but got injured and basically missed the last year and a half of his HS career but was still a top 100 recruit....major disappointment. Maybe there's a Grand Rapids curse or maybe that competition out there just sucks balls and makes guys look way better than they are. Idk but it's weird.

Brown battles diabetes, which was not know until recently. That helps explain.

As noted by some others upthread, there haven't been many blowouts. Ohio State's current win streak consists of:
  • 34-21 in the 2019 B1GCG: UW led 14-0 early and 21-7 at the half but the Buckeyes scored 27 unanswered points in the second half to win by 13.
  • 38-7 in Columbus in 2019: Even this didn't "feel" like a blowout until the closing minutes. Wisconsin's TD brought them within three in the third quarter and they were within 10 until deep in the third quarter but Ohio State ran away with it by scoring the last 28 points of the game.
  • 27-21 in the 2017 B1GCG: This game was close throughout.
  • 30-23 in OT in Madison in 2016: This game was close throughout.
  • 59-0 in the 2014 B1GCG: This is the only one of the streak where it really never felt like the game was in doubt. Ohio State led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter, kicked a FG a minute later to make it a three-score game, and never looked back.
  • 31-24 in Columbus in 2014: This is the only game in the streak that really didn't "feel" as close as the final score. It was 31-14 in the fourth quarter and Wisconsin's final points (a FG to make it a one-score game) came with two minutes remaining.
  • 21-14 in OT in Madison in 2012: This was just an odd game. Ohio State opened up a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter then Wisconsin made it a one-score game mid-way through the second quarter. Then . . . Well not much. There was no more scoring until Wisconsin scored a tying TD in the final seconds. Ohio State scored in the first OT then held and that was it.
  • 33-29 in Columbus in 2011: This was a really weird game. A bad Ohio State team that had no business even being in this game managed to lead for most of the game and hang around long enough for Braxton Miller to put on his superman cape and complete a miracle pass late for a close win.

So of the eight:
  • 2 were in OT, that's as close as it gets
  • 3 were within one score
  • 1 was a 13 point win in which tOSU pulled away late.
  • 1 was a 31 point win in which tOSU pulled away late.
  • 1 was a true blowout.

I liked it that King Barry gave OSU fits and got wins, but that was before OSU got hyper-charged into this terrible machine that it is today.

yeah they're definitely a different animal post Urban. He took what Tressel built to the next level. Day has maintained thus far but he's gotta win a Natty to keep pace with Urban or his seat gonna get hot.

Wisconsin was also oddly successful against Earle Bruce. Bruce's record against league opponents:
  • 1.000, NU, 8-0
  • .889, IU, 8-1
  • .889, MN, 8-1
  • .857, MSU, 6-1
  • .857, PU, 6-1
  • .778, IL, 7-2
  • .714, Iowa, 5-2
  • .556, M, 5-4
  • .444, UW, 4-5

I called this odd because Wisconsin wasn't very good from 1979-1987. You certainly wouldn't expect them to have the best record against any BigTen team in that time frame

The fact that you can even mention, Correctly, Ryan Days name in the same sentence as “ hot sear” is mind boggling

in his 4 and 1/4 seasons as OSU coach, he is 37-4.  He has only lost one conference game. His losses came from Clemson (NC), Alabama (NC), Michigan ( CFP team) and Oregon.  He has made the CFP 3 out of the 4 years.

He took what urban left and actually has taken it up at least three levels. His offenses have been nearly unstoppable. And people forget that he brought in a new defensive coordinator, Jeff Hafley, and that very first year they were top five in the country and defense. Unfortunately Hafley went onto Boston College after only one year.

He is great with the media, the players and their families.

He could get a job in the NFL very quickly.  I hope he stays for a long time.

Yes.   I was agreeing with you, but also pointing out how nuts that is.

I don’t think that way. Just give me a very competitive team to root for, that can hang w just about anyone most of the time. NCs are nice and all- but they aren’t realistic for expectations
