Don't hunt pheasant much, or ducks or turkey at all.

#8 for dove though, that'll do.  Something really pleasurable about blowing the bird of peace right out of the sky, and then grilling it up wrapped in bacon and a jalapeno.

I haven't gone hunting in quite a few years,don't know if i have the heart for it.But i can still get back into the deep recesses/ravines and enjoy nature in it's pure form and enjoy a good work out.Toss back some cold Yuenglings and reminisce when I get back to the truck

This is what I do when I go deer hunting with my friends.  After my first couple years of actually hunting deer, I realized I just don't like shooting Bambi.  So now I just go out and stomp around on the ranch with friends for a couple days.  I drink beer while they clean deer, works fine for me.

And it's clear that the author GETS chili.  You should heed his words:

For pheasant, I was #6 all the way. My dad would start with #6 and go to #4 later in the year when the birds got wise. In SW Iowa, we were lucky enough to get into some quail from time to time. That's an #8 shot if you wanted anything left of it.

Said he was a great author,I never sampled a bowl of his red.He wrote for years with Field & Stream & Outdoor Life.Many of his books can be had on Amazon.He could resurrect images of Hunting Camp's & Fishing Lodges,the stories,companions,dogs.Just a phenomenal writer IMO,poignant,insightful,humorous & sentimental.Great stuff to read on a cold nite by the fire.And sip the good stuff

My oldest brother was a recruiter for the USAF stationed at Wright-Patt in Dayton.Back in the day all the young kids he recruited in the southern part of the state - well their families all had farms and there was never a shortage of hunting Pheasant/Quail.Two very bad winters in the late '70's really put the keebosh on that.At least in the Northern half of the state I'm afraid most of the Pheasants are/were pen raised.I haven't raised the barrel on a Quail or Pheasant in over 20 years.Rabbits,Grouse and Whitetail were plentiful however.The whitetail have almost become a plague - big ones too

corn-fed whitetail taste very good

not much better than venison loin chops on the grill - rare

There are quite a few Krogers down here.  We usually shop at one.  Publix is more common though.  
I used to dove hunt in NC back in the Day.  We'd use mostly 8, sometimes 7.5, but 8 was plenty.  Them birds can turn on a dime.
They are the best eating bird I've ever had, I will say that.  Not much to'em but tasty.

We had many many deer living in the woods behind out house in Cincy (a green belt thing).  They were "pretty" but the wreaked havoc on most of the stuff I planted.  My yard morphed into being whatever deer won't eat.  They killed a lot of trees with their antlers.  I had some nice maples and the bark protection came loose and they were toast, made me mad.

One big buck wondered to about 10 feet from me in the back yard.  He never saw me.I would not have wanted to tangle with him though I did have a shovel in my hands, saw him coming and just went still.  I guess I didn't smell bad enough, or was downwind.

He was in really good condition, I don't understand how they survive those winters.

I've got a nice, not large, 10 pointer hanging on the wall in my basement

Hunting deer in Iowa is with shotgun slugs.  Makes it much more sporting.  Range is 100 yards or less.

I did some bow hunting back in the day, but range was probably 25-30 yards for me.  Might as well put a knife in my teeth and leap on them if I can get that close.
