(7) The Lost Boys vs. (10) St. Elmo’s Fire

(7) The Lost Boys (1987)
Vampires, motorcycles, leather jackets, big hair, the California boardwalk, synthesizers, the Coreys, and an unforgettable saxophone performance make The Lost Boys one of the most visually ’80s movies in the field. Its soundtrack, style, and mixture of horror and youth culture have given it lasting cult appeal.
(10) St. Elmo’s Fire (1985)
Its staying power may be weaker than that of The Breakfast Club or Ferris Bueller, but its Brat Pack cast, fashion, music, relationships, ambition, and young-adult drama make it a valuable mid-’80s time capsule. It represents the uncertain transition from college life into adulthood and professional ambition.

I remember hearing my older cousins praising St. Elmo's Fire and it made no sense to me. At the time (late-90s), Nick at Nite was airing reruns of St. Elsewhere in syndication, and thinking this - an outdated hospital show - was what they were referring to. When I finally figured out the difference, I remember thinking St. Elmo's Fire could've done itself better with a cooler name. Needless to say, The Lost Boys is a way cooler title.

St Elmo's Fire is one of those movies that I have just never seen.  I don't ever remember even catching it in passing.  I just looked, you really can't even stream it without paying extra.  It doesn't seem to rotate through cable/Netflix and the like.  I'd like to watch it but I'm not going out of my way to watch it.

St. Elmo's Fire is a generally forgettable movie, but foundational for the Brat Pack--the it new actors who ruled pop 1980s movies. The Lost Boys had the Coreys, Keifer Sutherland, and Diane Wiest, who was the iconic single, frazzled, 1980s mom. I still think the Brat Pack seals this matchup, but apparently you all disagree. Like many of these matchups, there's no doubt that the Lost Boys is a far superior movie.

Also "Santa Carla" (aka Santa Cruz) is close to where I grew up (and live), and a great setting for a vampire movie.

It's hard to go against the Brat Packishness of St. Elmo's Fire, but I went Lost Boys because of that beach boardwalk scene with Tim Capello (from Tina Turner's band) all muscled up, oily and shirtless, shaking his hips like a doofus and throwing out a saxophone solo to kids with 80's-mullets headbanging.  That kind of cheese only happens in the 80's.

I think the max number of votes we've had on one of these is 16.  We currently sit at 13. So if the final 3 folks vote and they all go to the Brat Pack, then this would be tied.

But, that seems unlikely at this point, so... call it? @Gigem
