I did commission in 2007 before medical school and have been on active duty for the past 10 years in the Navy.  I am sitting deployed on a warship right now following the Iowa-ISU game on gametracker.  Armed Forces Network decided they would rather televise Georgia-UAB.  I just finished writing an email to my preschooler about how the events of the day have still been impacting my life in ways that I did not expect, as recently as the past several weeks.

Thank you.  Funnily enough, I am not really new around here, although I do not post much.  I have been regularly visiting this board for about 15 years (started back in the CFN days).  I read it almost every college football weekend and at least weekly in the offseason.  I just rarely post anything.

20 years ago today?

I was in my office early, and I did have the TV on.

I saw video of the first plane to hit, and I was thinking that is some bad navigational practice. Then, #2 hit and I immediately thought that we are under attack.

Chilling to think about.
I was home getting ready for work. We had CNN on, but back then I generally did not turn the television on while getting ready for work. I suspect we heard about it on the radio and flipped on the TV.
I thought the first hit was from a small plane, but when I saw the next hit, I immediately knew Osama bin Laden was behind it. He was not well-known to the public before 9/11/2001, but I had read about him, and had seen some coverage about him on 60-minutes, which was enough for me to know he was capable of planning this, and had a terrorist training camp in a remote part of Afghanistan.

They used to have the full five hour news feed on you tube for all of the various networks, but they have been deleted apparently.

It was actually pretty interesting. Even then Fox was the only one that was willing to speculate that it might be terrorism when the first plane hit. Most of the others thought (hoped) that it was an Air Traffic mishap. One of the networks even clung to this "Navigational error" theory after the second plane hit; caving only after the pentagon absorbed a plane.

I remember having discussions afterward in my government class about the decisions to go to war.  I did not enlist, but I did commission in 2007 before medical school and have been on active duty for the past 10 years in the Navy.  I am sitting deployed on a warship right now following the Iowa-ISU game on gametracker.  Armed Forces Network decided they would rather televise Georgia-UAB.  I just finished writing an email to my preschooler about how the events of the day have still been impacting my life in ways that I did not expect, as recently as the past several weeks.
my daughters were 4 and 7 at the time, I remember knowing it would change the world going forward and how different my daughter's world would be from my growing up.

My wife was in Chicago on business and I was at work.  Later in the AM daycare phoned to let me know they were closing early because the owner had family in the Pentagon. Spent the next 24 hours trying to figure out how to get the wife home with all flights having been canceled.  My kid’s first complete sentence happened that evening: “ I want my mama.”

I was at home on leave and was sleeping in. I was out late the night before doing what sailors do. My brother came over to my in-laws house and woke me up saying "we're going to war". We turned on the TV to see the second plane hit. At that point I knew that my brother was right and I started to try and contact my ship. It took me two days to finally get ahold of someone.
