My two main expenses now are property tax and the HOA.  They are pretty insane as I think about it.
Isn't it crazy how we were all lead to believe that you can actually own property in this country?

May say so on the title, but if you don't pay your taxes, or say, "rent," to the government, you don't get to keep it.

Florida is working on eliminating property taxes for homestead properties, for everything but school taxes.

Here’s how Gov. Ron DeSantis plans to replace property taxes in Florida

Yep.

S'why I would seriously consider moving back to Louisiana in retirement.  Homestead exemption in Texas only gets you so far.  Property taxes are still a drain here no matter where you are or what you do.  They're negligible in LA with HE.

I wouldn't necessarily wanna move to the southern parts of LA where I come from though.  Maybe somewhere outside of Shreveport or Monroe.....much of those areas are nice and don't deal with the same level of nuclear mosquitoes that I'm accustomed to.  Just have to be far enough outside of Monroe to not be able to smell the putrid chemical plants there......ugh.

Relative ease of travel was consideration for us. RSW is decent in that regard. Since we use American Airlines almost exclusively, we get routed through Charlotte, DFW, Phila, JFK and Chicago (AA hubs).

Chicago is not a problem because we go there a lot and it's direct from here on all airlines (including Allegiant out of PGD). But, like I said, we almost always fly AA, with some Allegiant sprinkled in when they do their BOGO offers.

Monroe's airport seems to be only served by AA and Delta, and AA only goes to DFW while Delta only goes to ATL.

Yeah, that would be somewhat important to me as well. I want to travel in retirement, and depending on where I retire (and where the kids live), I might have to travel to visit them.

It's the one thing that would make moving to somewhere like Paso Robles really hard. It's pretty much a 3-4 hour drive to a semi-major airport--and if I need to get to LAX or SFO to go international, it's even harder than if I just wanted to end up someplace like San Jose or Burbank to fly domestic.

Europe for us is a lot of choices. Chicago is one because we combine it with family/friends. That, or we get routed through PHL, JFK, etc. One stop - no biggie.

I doubt we'll air travel West that much in the future, other than for family stuff in PHX or LA. Been to Hawaii 4 times and see no need to return, unless it was to see this guy again.

Speaking of Paso, my wife was born in San Luis Obispo, and mother-in-law moved back there for awhile with husband #4.  That sounds bad, but #3 died in a drag racing incident with a little toy truck he put a crate 502 in on his 4th pass.

Anyway, #4 was a retired oral surgeon, and had a freaking beautiful home, that he sold for 1.2 mil.  The buyer, a tech millionaire, immediately knocked it over to build an even more expensive pad.  Had a running stream just outside the backyard gate, and that town is freaking beautiful.  It's just that nobody that works there can afford to live there.

He, #4, took me on a trip around the county to wineries one day.  Being from BFE, I was absolutely amazed.

And, there are airports in both Paso and SLO that get you to LA real quick.

Just down the road are beautiful places such as Pismo Beach, and to the north a bit is the Hearst Castle and the Hwy 1 views.

Anyway, unless those lotto numbers (that I don't play) hit, it's going to be far out of $ reach for most anybody.

Good point... I guess I never really think about them since I don't live there. But I'm sure you can catch a puddle jumper easily.

Not necessarily. I've looked at the area, and it's not insane. If I manage to buy someplace modest here in the next two years, then between equity and downsizing when I retire, I could probably make it a lateral move to cheaper move. Paso is a lot more expensive than the rural Midwest, of course, but a lot cheaper than Orange County.

Pretty much everywhere has an airport these days, where you can puddle jump to a larger one nearby.

The big airport was an ancillary factor for us.  I could handle most connecting flights ok.  And we don’t have that many long direct flights out of here.  Places like Vienna require a stop.
