You play a song at a stadium long enough, everyone hates it. MSU started playing Thunderstruck in the early 90s. The fact that they still played it until 2021, despite it never becoming a "thing" like VT and Enter Sandman is hilarious. Michigan started playing Mr. Brightside randomly in 2016, like a decade after it came out, and they act like they own a mildly popular song. I feel like every college now feels the need to find a song that is theirs, but 99% of them are stupid. MSU finally abandoned AC/DC. My UM friend alum didn't realize when they played a pop rock hit from 2006 at the 2024 Rose Bowl that it was Michigan's "thing", because nobody except Michigan student knew it. Some of these things happen organically, but now every school tries to find a song to pigeon hole into being "theirs"
