That Texas-Mizzou game was a wild one.  It was our first game as official B12 members and they decided to open the season with a conference game instead of non-con.  A massive thunderstorm came in during the second half and the game was delayed for almost an hour.  Kids were jumping the walls and running across the field, sliding like soccer players after a goal.  Security tried to chase them but couldn't keep up.

Horns prevailed 40-10, Ricky Williams and Priest Holmes both had big days.

1996 was a good season

The two-time defending national champion and top-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers looked every bit the part in a season-opening 55-14 win against Michigan State.

The Huskers got contributions from all areas, including the offense, defense and special teams. Nebraska led 27-0 at the half and 34-0 before the Spartans got on the board.

In the first half, NU scored on a rushing touchdown by quarterback Scott Frost, a 62-yard punt return by Mike Fullman and an 84-yard interception return by Mike Minter.

Nebraska All-America candidate Grant Wistrom added another defensive touchdown, scoring on a nine-yard interception return late in the third quarter.

Offensively, Nebraska gained 298 yards, including 184 on the ground, led by sophomore Ahman Green’s 71 yards and a touchdown.

But it was the Husker defense that did the most damage. The Blackshirts held MSU to 246 yards, intercepted Spartan quarterbacks three times and had seven sacks for 50 yards in losses.

It was Nebraska’s 11th straight victory in a season opener, its 26th straight win overall, 37th straight regular-season win and 31st in a row at home.

There are a lot of what-ifs from that season but Tennessee is generally ignored because they finished 10-2 and #9 so they aren't really seen as being all that close but . . .

Their two losses were by 6 at home to Florida and by 4 on the road to a terrible Memphis team.  Those are both very winnable games and games that the Volunteers probably should have won.  If they'd have won the UF game they'd have gone to the SECCG and probably played FSU in the Sugar Bowl.

Tennessee's 6-point loss to Florida was 35-0 midway through the 2nd quarter.  The rest of the game was running plays and prevent defense.

The Nebraska @ ASU game that year was surreal.  It was like a video game set to 'impossible' difficulty for the Huskers, where nothing they did would work.  And Derrick Rodgers, I think #59 lived in their backfield the whole game.
