For some reason I thought NIU was independent in 1983. That happened in 1986 and then afterward again, and before. Probably a permanent fixture in the MAC now.

Yeah, they left in 86, then joined the Big West briefly, before returning to the MAC in 1997.

Seems like they used the MAC, thinking it would be a springboard.  And they dumped a lot of money into athletics in the 70s.  Didn't really pan out, and the NCAA threatened to demote the entire MAC, due to attendance issues.  NIU started fighting with MAC officials and dropped out.  Things were even worse for them outside of the MAC though

Who was in the Big West at that point in time, when NIU was in it? I think 1995 or 1996??

Pacific is the school I always think of when I think of the Big West.  Boise may have joined around then.  Fresno?

should have been a little more impressive vs a 3 loss Michigan team
I guess a win is a win (ranking undefeateds over 1-loss teams) until it isn't.

Kind of hypocritical.
I guess they should've got blown out in their first game of the season like Miami did.

So #1, #2 and #3 all playing true OOC road games against top 20 teams in the same week.  When one loss would essentially end your NC hopes, but everyone was just playing for conference titles first and foeremost.

Good times

Also, 1983 MSU had a 32 year old Nick Saban with his first DC gig

Gators tied USC irl in 83.  Big game for us, leading to a great 3-year run of success (and cheating).
