Yeah, not to pick nits, but the OP specified "iconic" rather than classic.

To me, iconic is a different tier of movies, a much smaller group, than "classic."

But I'm also not sure a movie has to be a classic to be iconic.  Avatar, in many ways, should be considered an iconic movie.  But I don't know if many would call it "classic."

Anyway just musing and splitting hairs.  It's what I do.

  • West Side Story -  No interest

This is one that's so often referenced that I wanted to see it.  So I go check it out at the Phoenix Theater.  My reaction was "That's it?".
For something so widely referenced, I thought there'd be more to it.

So what movies would you consider to be iconic? For me, Animal House comes to mind. It is one of those movies that took comedy to a place it had never been before. While there are many people that couldn't stand the movie, many others (me included) loved the movie. I would put it and Blazing Saddles as iconic comedy.

I have seen only parts of the following, never start to finish:

Animal House
Airplane
The golf movie thing with gophers, I forget the name now.
Monty Python

When I watched Avatar, I sided with the Marines.

My friends and I saw Lebowkski in theaters like 13 times.  It was right up our alley, so to speak.
