Week 8 Horsepower Rankings
« on: October 22, 2017, 06:59:33 AM »
1. Penn State (Beat Michigan 42-13, next week @OSU) A somewhat surprising and thorough asskicking on Michigan.  That offense wasn't quite what we saw earlier this season, but it was what I was expecting coming into the season, as Penn State had an answer for everything UM tried.  The defense started to look vulnerable, but buttoned it up at halftime and that was all she wrote.  Sets up a tremendous matchup Saturday.

2. Ohio State (BYE, next week Penn State)  A good week for a bye.  Hopefully they watch how playing man against Penn State might not be the best strategy.

3. Wisconsin (Beat Maryland 38-13, next up @Illinois) Another humdrum Wisconsin game against an overmatched team.  More of the same next week.

4. Michigan State (Beat Indiana 17-9, next @Northwestern) They can play some defense, which can win you some games.  But boy that was not great looking offensively.

5. Michigan (Lost to Penn State 42-13, next week Rutgers) Welp, sometimes you get your ass kicked by a better team.  The offense had some moments where they didn't look hopeless.  Interesting to see if they change quarterbacks and prepare for next season.

6. Indiana (Lost to MSU 17-9, next week @Maryland) 0-4 in the conference, but you can't get closer to winning than they have the past couple weeks.  Now they are favored to win - are they a legit team?  We shall see.

7. Northwestern (Beat Iowa 17-10, next week MSU)  A spunky performance from the spunky group.

8. Iowa (Lost to Northwestern 17-10, next week Minnesota) Dropped them for losing and because Indiana deserves a shoutout.  Thi mushy middle is tough to rank.

9. Purdue (Lost to Rutgers 14-12, next week Nebraska) Don't sleep on Rutgers! Not a bad performance statistically, but it sounds like they don't trust the team to line up and run the ball with any consistency or to get tough yards. Which, hey, Purdue wasn't going to become really good in one season.

10. Minnesota (Beat Illinois 24-17, next week @Iowa) Somehow made Illinois look competitive

11. Nebraska (BYE, next week @Purdue) Time to see if the Cornhuskers have given up on the season

12. Rutgers (Beat Purdue 14-12, next week @Michigan) Can they slow down Michigan enough to go for three in a row?

13. Maryland (Lost to Wisconsin 38-13, next week Indiana) Not sure they are this bad, but not looking good on either side of the ball

14. Illinois (Lot to Minnesota 24-17, next week Wisconsin) Splat

  • Penn State - Impressive win over Michigan but the road gets tougher the next two weeks.
  • Ohio State - We'll find out this weekend
  • Wisconsin - We may not find out until December
  • Michigan State - The first two Saturdays of November could be interesting
  • Michigan - Is there that big of a gap between Michigan and the top three or just between Penn State and everybody else?
  • Iowa - In spite of the OT loss.
  • Indiana - In spite of being 0-4.
  • Northwestern -
  • Purdue - In spite of the surprise loss.
  • Nebraska -
  • Maryland -
  • Rutgers -  In spite of the surprise win, this is just as high as I feel comfortable going with Rutgers
  • Minnesota - ouch
  • Illinois - ouch

Penn St - Playing at an elite level
Wisconsin - They are gonna run the table
Michigan St - Notre Dame loss is officially better than OSU's Oklahoma loss
Ohio St - Have a chance to move up this week

Michigan -  $12 million a year, and they are tied for 4th/5th place in the East Division. With Rutgers.
Northwestern - Parking them ahead of Iowa this week
Iowa - Probably still better than Michigan, but lost to Northwestern
Indiana - Pretty solid team, but can't finish games

Maryland - Major QB injury issues on an otherwise solid team
Nebraska - Might win three of the last four after a rough start. But probably not.

Rutgers - They get to be parked ahead of Purdue for one week
Purdue - That was bad. Really bad. But they are obviously a better team this year

Minnesota - The oars have capsized, and the geese have had their wings clipped
Illinois - Can't believe Lovie Smith is still struggling so much

1. Penn State - They proved themselves last night. Next weekend looms large.
2. Wisconsin - They've basically won the West Division. The only question is if they'll get to Indy undefeated.
3. Ohio State - Next weekend we find out how good they are.
4. Michigan State - They'll probably get blown out by PSU and OSU but they're winning ugly against everyone else.
5. Michigan - Only this high by default. I'm hoping they put Peters in next weekend even if he's actually worse.
6. Indiana - They play the good teams tough but still lose. We'll see if they can beat the teams below.
7. Northwestern - Won an ugly game.
8. Iowa - I expect no less than to see the Hawkeyes play down to their competition.
9. Maryland - The Texas win and no bad losses keeps them this high.
10. Nebraska - Better than the rest....
11. Rutgers - Give them credit for winning games that they can win, even though they probably have the worst team in the league.
12. Purdue - I guess it shouldn't be too surprising that they lost to Rutgers in retrospect, but I thought they were better.
13. Minnesota - I had some hope for them after the 3-0 start, but struggling to beat Illinois is pretty bad.
14. Illinois - Only team without a conference win.

Maybe its time to stop worrying about wherher Mich is in the top 4, and whether it evens deserves to be in the top 5.

I considered that, but who would you move up?  From my list:
  • #6 Iowa - just lost to NU.
  • #7 Indiana - lost H2H to Michigan.
  • #8 Northwestern - looked horrible early, still not great.
  • #9 Purdue - just lost to Rutgers.
  • #10 Nebraska - looking terrible.

You are way too kind Brutus.

I'm looking at basketball sets already with the roster we have.

I'll be surprised if we beat Rutgers.

Michigan
Michigan State
Indiana
PSU

All guaranteed losses.

Agree there are not any good choices, but Mich is also not a good choice either.  Mich needed OT to beat Indy and got blown out by PSU.  Early victories over Florida and Purdue don't look so great now.

A case can be made for both NW and Iowa.  Agree NW looked awful early, but its only 2 conference losses were to PSU and Wisc.
Iowa's early OT win against Iowa State is looking better every week.  They have close losses to PSU, MSU, and NW.  But in the end, Iowa is just 1-3 in conference.

So those are not the strongest arguments, but that's the group that Mich belongs in, when discussing power rankings.  NW/Iowa/Mich are in the same group.
