Week 3 Preview
« on: September 09, 2019, 11:48:16 AM »
Slate of games not quite as entertaining on the whole, and nationally not much going on, but there are some to pay attention to.

Noon

Ohio State at Indiana, FOX: OSU and Justin Fields go on the road.  Most impressive thing from Fields has been his accuracy - completing 76% of his passes, many of them out past the hash marks.  He's still pretty deliberate in his reads, but having a big arm and being able to get the ball where it needs to go are jumping off the screen.  Indiana is a bit of a cipher - they have a new offense and we'll see what they look like against what has been a strong OSU defense.

Pitt at Penn State, ABC: PSU was shaky until the second half against a good Buffalo team.  They nuked Pitt last year, though Pitt turned out to be a competent team.  Pitt lost to Virginia and had a fairly dominant win over Ohio on stats, though not on score.

Maryland at Temple, CBSSN: The B1G's top offense and the nation's #21 team goes on the road to take on the Owls. Temple won their first game against Bucknell - they are still a bit of a mystery.  Remember they whipped Maryland last year, though, so revenge may be on the menu.

Eastern Michigan at Illinois, BTN: Illinois with an excellent chance to get to 3-0.

3:30

UNLV at Northwestern, BTN: Northwestern looks to get in the winning column against a UNLV team that just got obliterated by Arkansas St.

Georgia Southern at Minnesota, BTN: Let's hope the Gophs can win going away.

4 pm

Arizona State at Michigan State, FOX: MSU trying to exact revenge on last year's loss.  ASU has looked fairly lethargic in wins over Kent State and Sacramento State, so this is a great chance for MSU to show they are back in the thick of things.

Iowa at Iowa State, FS1: Iowa has looked pretty strong, and ISU really struggled with Northern Iowa, but this game always tends to be pretty fun lately.

7:30

TCU at Purdue, BTN: This could be a pretty fun game, and an excellent shot for Purdue to reverse the mojo of their opening loss.  TCU is still a mystery having only played one game against Arkansas Pine-Bluff.

8 pm

Northern Illinois at Nebraska, FS1: Nebraska in another game that could go sideways if they aren't on the ball. NIU played Utah pretty competitively, as least for a half, and won't be showing up for a paycheck.

Nationally, bleh.  Alabama goes to South Carolina, Florida goes to Kentucky. Clemson going to Syracuse was supposed to be a game until Maryland murdered the Orange.

They have a very good front 7 on defense, and a few grad transfers themselves. Their QB is pretty good too.

Plus, they've had a week off to prepare.

Crazy though, Shaq Smith sat out the entire Syracuse game with a groin injury.

Hope he's back for Temple. Then, a week to prepare for PSU.

On Friday there's a trio of games. N Carolina @ W Forest, Kansas @ BC, and Wazzou @ Houston.

On Sat there is the dueling "victory bell" games; Miami @ Cincy, and Ohio U @ Marshall. Yep. Two identically named trophy games separated by only about 150 miles of the Ohio river.

Also Tennessee vs Chattanooga, which could be a legendary upset... but probably won't.

Overall kind of a slow week.

Lol , it's funny how that trophy only lasted about 1 week, but its legacy lives on for years.

Its also funny how it's kinda grown on me over the years to point where I actually prefer the precious moments corn worshiping farmer family over the actual trophy they use for the Cy-hawk game,  even though its has nothing to do with football.

Initially it was sorta meh.

Then they had the "interim" cyhawk trophy after the farm one was rejected.

And then finally the settled on this thing.

none of the 4 are impressive

could they just had a jug, or axe, or plow, or cornstalk or tractor or hog or combine or windmill or something?

This is the second and last week of just one conference game.  As we get further into the schedule this post of mine will be more complete.  For now, the only conference game this year, based on our current Power Rankings, is #1 tOSU at #11 IU.  That just doesn't generate a lot of interest.  Next week we will see:
  • #2 Wisconsin vs #5 Michigan
  • #6 Michigan State at #9 Northwestern
  • #10 Nebraska at #12 Illinois
